Part B Competency: 3.2. Understanding Written Report Texts

Read the following text carefuly and answer the questions.

Porcupines are rodents. They belong to the family of

Erethizontidae. The name porcupine comes from Middle
French porcespin (spined pig). A regional American
name for the animal is quill pig.
Porcupines are the third largest of the rodents. Most
porcupines are about 25-36 in (63-91 cm) long, with an
8-10 in (20-25 cm) long tail. Porcupines weight between
12-35 lb (5,4-16 kg). They are rounded, large, and slow.
Porcupines come in various shades of brown, grey, and unusual white. A
porcupines body is covered with a coat of sharp spines or quills. It uses the spines
to defend or to camouflage it from predators. The spines may drop out when the
porcupine shakes its body.
Porcupines occupy a short range of habitats in tropical areas of Asia, Southem
Europe, Africa, and North and South America. Porcupines live in forests, deserts,
rocky outcrops, hillsides and grass sides. Some porcupines live in trees. Porcupines
are generally nocturnal but are occasionally active during daylight.
The common porcupine is an herbivore. It eats leaves, herbs, twigs, and green
plants. In the winter, it may eat bark. The North American porcupine often climbs
trees to find food.

Part C PERFORMANCE TEST
Competency: 3.3. Reading Aloud Written Report Text Type

Choose one of the following texts. Read it loud in front of the class.

Mosquitoes

Everyone knows the small insect called the mosquito. It is possible to find
mosquitoes in almost every part of the world except in places where it is extremely
cold or where it is very dry. During the summer, it is almost certain that you can find
many mosquitoes near swamps, ponds, and lakes.
Mosquitoes have an interesting life cycle. The female mosquito bites a person or
animal in order to get some blood. She needs this blood before she can lay her eggs.
Then she flies to an area of water and deposits her eggs in the water. In a few days
the eggs open, and the baby mosquitoes, alled larvae, come out. In a short time, they
will mature and fly away.
It is interesting to note that only the female will bite for blood. She has a special
mouth which can go into animals skin or persons skin. On the other hand, the male
mosquito can only drink plant juices with its mouth.
GIRAFFES

One of the tallest and most interesting animals is giraffe. Male giraffes are usually
about six meters tall. Half of the giraffes height comes from its neck, which is
longer than is legs. A giraffe has big brown eyes which are protected by very thick
lashes. Since it lives in parts of Africa which are usually dry with a great deal of
dust, the lashes are an important source of protection. They can also cover its
nostrils in order to proctect its nose. It has brown spots on tan skin and this coloring
helps protect the giraffe. The giraffe also has two short horns on its head.
Like the camel, the giraffe can go a long time without drinking water. One
source of water is the leaves which the giraffe eats from trees. Since it is so tall, the
giraffe can reach the tender leaves at the top of a tree.
Giraffes usually live in small herds and often feed with other animals. A baby
giraffe is two meters tall at birth. It can stand up by itself within a few minutes and
can run well in about two days. Giraffes have two methods of self protection. If
something frightens an adult giraffe, it can gallop away about fifty kilometers per
hour or stay to fight with its strong legs.
