pluripotent human embryonic stem cells in perfused
bioreactors through oxygen control , does not clearly indicate that the main purpose of the study was to industrialize human embryonic stem cell production by introducing a method that increased the yield of the production by 12-fold.
Unfortunately, in this journals case, the author did not
provide a list of keywords to clarify the definitions of vague or uncommon terminologies, and jargon. Thus, I had to search for the definitions of some terminologies used in the article that I am not familiar of.
Upon reading the abstract, Ive already understood the
scheme. It was clear, brief, precise and written in a simple, understandable manner, just like what an abstract should be. However, the purpose or significance, the method used, and experimentation part was not emphasized in the abstract which for me is the most interesting par t. But in general, the abstract is good.
The introduction gave an insight to the main significance
and purpose of the paper regarding stem cell technology, specifically, greatly improving the fields of regenerative medicine, in vitro toxicology, and drug screening. It also introduced the new methods together with improvisation s, accompanying the scaling-up of the process into bio reactors, to produce better quality human embryonic stem cells.
Ideally all researches should allow themselves to be
emulated, meaning, someone should be able to repeat their procedures, either to confirm or debunk their findings. In this articles case, complicated and expensive materials and equipment were used which is somehow understandable because they are dealing with sensitive subjects that requires very specific optimal conditions. If a researc her wants to investigate on this matter, the only way for him or her is probably to seek help or assistance from a laboratory that has all the equipment and materials required.
The main aim of the study is to lay out a foundation to
industrialize human embryonic stem cell culturing. One may question why not just upscale the existing method used in the laboratory, but in reality, not all laboratory set ups and methods work on an industrial scale. Its the very reason why we have chemical engineers and chemists.
In the study, the researchers investigated the optimal
conditions for propagation of pluripotent human embryonic stem cells in controlled stirred tank bioreactors. Different inoculation conditions were firstly evaluated in spinner flasks. The best conditions to promote human embryonic stem cells attachment were achieved by combining matrigel-coated. In general, the result were clearly stated and discussed. Illustrations, graphs, and images of the actual cells are provided giving the discussion a comp lete sense along with all the numerical findings.
The conclusion was brief and concise, answering the
problem directly, they clearly stated the increase in production (12-fold) and the factors that contributed to its success, primarily the control of oxyg en, and secondarily the improved equipment and media used to attach and grow the human embryonic cells into. The last part of the conclusion stated that the technology developed, thus, can be translated to clinical and industrial settings, assuring the scalable production of cell-based products in a robust, controlled and automated manner
