Time- 3 Hrs Max Marks: 60
Instructions to candidates:
Section A is compulsory. Each question carries 2 marks.
Attempt any five questions from Section B, C & D. Selecting not more than two
questions from each section.

SECTION A

Q.1)

a) Define the term compound or shrunk cylinders & explain how this cylinder can be
used to reduce the circumferential stresses.
b) List all the theories of failure and which theory is best when safety is criteria &
which theroy is best when cost is criteria.
c) What are the various assumptions are made while driving lames equation of thick
cyliners
d) What is the formula of maximum radial and circumferentail stresses in rotating solid
disc.
e) State the limitation of Euler's formula for calculating critical load on columns.
(5 x2 = 10)

SECTION B (10 Marks Each)

Q.2) A steel bar is placed between two copper bars, each having same area and lengths steel
bar at 20C. At this stage they are readily connected together at both the ends. When the
temperature is raised to 320C , the length of the bar increases by 1.5mm. Determine orginal
length and final stresses in the bars.
Take ES= 220GPa, EC 110GPa
S = 0.000012 perC
C = 0.0000175 per C

Q.3) In a material principal stresses are 90MN/m2,50 MN/m2 and -45 MN/m2calculate
a) Total strain energy

1
b) volumetric strain energy
c) shear strain energy
d) factor of safety on the total strain energy criteria
e) factor of safety on the shear strain energy crieria if material yields at 135 MN/m 2
take E= 250 GN/m2 and =0.29
Q.4) At a point in a bracket the stresses on two mutually perpendicular planes are 95
MN/m2(tensile)and 45 MN/m2(tensile). The shear stress along the plane is 20 MN/m2. Find the
magnitude and direction of the resultant stresses on a plane making an angle 40 with the plane of
second stress. Also find the normal and tangential stresses on the plane

SECTION C (10 Marks Each)

Q.5) Derive Lames equation for a thick cylinder subjected to internal pressure P2 and external
pressure P1 respectively.

Q.6) A steel cylinder of 800 mm internal diameter is to be designed for an internal pressure of
4.8 MPa. Calculate
a) The thickness if maximum shear stress is 21 MPa.
b) The increase in volume due to working pressure, if the cylinder is 7m long with closed ends.
Neglect any constraints due to ends
Take E= 200GPa and poissons ratio =1/3

Q.7) A boiler drum consists of a cylindrical portion 4m long, 1.5 m in diameter and 2.4cm thick.
It is closed by hemispherical ends. In a hydraulic test to 10MPa, how much additional water must
be pumped in after intial filling at atmospheric pressure? The circumferential strain at the
junction of the cylinder and hemisphere may be assumed to be same
E= 250GPa, K=2.5GPa and poissons ratio =0.27

SECTION D (10 Marks Each)

Q.8) Determine the ratio of buckling strengths of two columns of circular cross section one
hollow and other solid both are made of same materials, have the same length, same cross
sectional area and end conditions. The internal diameter of the hollow column is half of external
diameter.

Q.9) A steel disc of uniform thickness and of diameter 400mm is rotating about the axis at 2500
r.p.m.The density of the material is 7700 kg/m3and poissons ratio is 0.3. Determine the
variations of circumfetrential and radial stresses.

b) Euler formula
