Project Summary (Madeline Rayfield)

To properly service our growing client base, Planet Express must expand both its fleet
and its workforce. By expanding the current hangar, purchasing a second ship, and
hiring a new crew to man it, we can increase our delivery speed by 100%. This would
allow us to not only properly serve our current client base, but also take on more
customers and continue to expand our business.

Introduction

As the demand for courier services continues to increase, Planet Express cannot meet
the expectations of our client base. Our efforts to create a company that balanced
efficiency with customer service has paid off, but now we are unable to maintain the
standard of service we set for ourselves. In order to remedy this, we need to double our
current resources. This means purchasing a new ship, expand our current hangar to
house it, and hiring a new crew to man it. We expect to hire about three people to
become the crew of the new ship, and at least one of the crew members should be
capable of piloting. While we search for the new employees, we will work on the hangar
expansion and finding a ship to purchase.

Rationale and Significance

Planet Express Inc. is currently given too many deliveries for the current number of
crew and ships to handle. Having one ship and many long distance deliveries to
perform that often travel into dangerous territory and take longer than expected. By
purchasing a new ship and extra crew we can effectively double the efficiency of our
deliveries. The new ship should be capable of going longer distances at faster speeds
and at lower costs meaning the old ship and crew can be used for shorter distance
deliveries and the new ship and crew for longer distance deliveries. In order to house
the new ship we must provide more hangar space by expanding the current hangar to
be capable of holding two ships while remaining within our current property space.

Plan of Work

Scope

There are a few constraints on each of the tasks at hand. In order to expand our hangar
we must also make sure that the hangar expansion is done within the current real
estate as purchasing new real estate close to the current facility is not feasible. The
ship must also be around the same size as the current ship but should be much more
fuel efficient and much faster. For the crew we are looking for 3 new members, each
need to have previous experience with long distance space travel and at least one
needs to be a capable pilot.

Methods

In order to get all of this done we must first find a local contractor for the hangar
expansion and begin setting up plans for how to layout the new hangar. We can then
look for new or used spaceships at local retailers as long as they meet the specified
requirements for longer distance and more efficient travel. We will only be looking for
a ship at this point, as a purchase wont be needed until after the hangar expansion is
finished. Lastly we must scout for new crew members from the Earth Space Flight
Academy and begin the hiring process once both the spaceship and hangar are
finished.

Task Breakdown

We have projected to finish our plan of work within 8 months of starting the project.
We will be using company hours to complete these tasks and will not be worked upon
after company hours. During the first month, we will use our crew during to scout
within our galaxy for the desired ship. We have also posted a job advertisement on the
Planet Express website that will last for 6 months. We will also scout and contact
contractors that are willing to expand the current hangar within our parameters.
After we have found our contractors, they will start expanding the hanger. From the
2nd month to the 4th month, we will set up the foundation of the expansion. The next 3
months will be focused on building the rest of the expansion. The last month will be
focused on interviewing the applicants and deciding which ship we will purchased.

Problem Analysis

The problems that we could have is that we might be able to find a contractor that will
accept our request. We also might not even enough people to complete our roster for
our crew. These 2 major problems can set back our progress of finishing the project
within 8 months.

Budget/Cost Proposal

Hangar Expansion
- Likely around $30,000 in construction costs, including planning and labor
- Potential loss of efficiency during the hangar construction, as it would slightly
impede normal use of the ship hangar
Hiring a Second Crew
- $50,000 plus benefits for all new crew members
- Could be up to 10% more depending on salary negotiations
Purchasing a New Ship
-Between half a million to two million dollars, depending on whether we decide
to purchase a new or used ship.
