How do our Ears Hear Sound?

Big Idea: The ear has man different parts and functions

Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Rationale: Why are you teaching this content? Why are students learning this material? Why is
it important for students to learn? How does it connect to their lives?

NC Essential Standard(s):
2. P.1 Understand the relationship between sound and vibrating objects.
2.P.1.2 Summarize the relationship between sound and objects of the body that vibrate-
eardrum and vocal cords.

Next Generation Science Standard(s):

1-PS4 Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make
sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

21st Century Skills

Critical thinking This was chosen because much of the students assessment will be through
questioning. The teacher will ask questions about what the students learned and they will have
to, in their own words, give their answers. They will have to think about how each part of the ear
works to respond thoughtfully to the question.
Communication - This was chosen because much of the students assessment will be
through questioning and the lesson is Five Es based. Since the lesson is Five Es based the
students will be actively involved, asking and answering questions, giving descriptions,
and guiding the lesson. Therefore, they will learn how to communicate in an effective way.

Instructional Objective: The students will learn the different parts of the ear. The students are
expected to be able to recall and identify the different parts of the ear. The teacher will assess
this through questioning.
Performance: Students will create an ear diagram
Conditions: Students will work independently
Criteria: This lesson will be evaluated through formative assessment

Prerequisite knowledge and skills: Students will need to know that sounds come from
vibrations and enter through our ears.

Students with special needs or different learning styles will work in a small group with one of the
teachers.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 Es. Your procedure should be
detailed enough for a colleague to follow. Additionally, I expect you to include possible
questions and anticipated student responses to your questions for each section.

Engage: The students will begin with a review of prior lessons. Questions will include, What
have you all learned about sound? How do we hear sound?

Explore: The students will watch a video about the different parts of the ear. In this video, they
will go inside the ear and visually experience the parts of the ear and how it effects how we hear
sounds.

Explanation: The teacher will present a PowerPoint presentation with all the vocabulary
content. The teacher will display the word and the image and then ask the students what each
part of the ear does based on the knowledge they received in the video. Questions include, What
is this part of the ear? Where can we find it? What does it do? The students will be able to use
their own ears when to answer the question What part of the ear can we touch/ hold?

Elaborate: Students will be given an ear diagram worksheet that they will have to cut up and
assemble correctly to make up an ear.

Evaluate: Students will be assessed informally through questions. As the students are working,
the teacher will walk around the room asking questions such as, What part of the ear is this?
What is this part of the ear called? Is it the inner or outer ear? What does this part of the ear do?

Closure: Teacher will say to the students, Today we learned about parts of our ears. We
learned what they are called, where they are located, and how the benefit us to hear sound.
Whenever we hear sound all these parts are working hard so you can hear sound.

Assessment Results of all objectives/ Skills: All students completed the activity and 85% were
able to answer the questions when asked.
