Praxis Core Exam Analysis

Exam Requirements

Aspiring teachers must demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics by passing

the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam. Nevada State College, UNLV, and UNR require

passing the Praxis Core before transferring into their Education programs or registering in 300 or 400

level Education classes (Praxis Core Exam, n.d). Additionally, passing the Praxis Core is a requirement of

the Nevada Department of Education for teacher licensure (Testing Requirements, n.d.). In Nevada the

scores required to pass are: Reading--156; Writing--162; Mathematics--150 (Nevada Test Requirements,

n.d.).

Exam Preparation

As part of this assignment, students were required to take a Praxis Core practice exam from

Teachers Test Prep. In preparation, I studied three PDF files--one each on reading, writing, and

mathematics--provided by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). These PDFs give examples of typical

exam questions as well as information on what to expect when taking the actual Praxis Core. After

reading these PDFs I felt prepared to take the practice exam. (Educational Testing Service, 2017)

Exam Results

The Teachers Test Prep Praxis Core practice exam, gives results in reading, writing, and mathematics as a

percentage of questions answered correctly and as a rating of likelihood to pass the actual Praxis Core.

My scores were as follows:

Reading 73%--Borderline

Writing 78%--Borderline

Mathematics 83%--Likely to Pass

Future Exam Preparation

If all three of my scores were in the likely to pass range, I would feel confident attempting the Praxis

Core. However, since this is not the case, I believe I will benefit from additional preparation. As a first

step in this preparation I will review the results from the practice Praxis Core exam. These results allow

for viewing of the graded practice exam and give basic diagnostics for areas that need improvement.

Next, I plan to purchase and use a study guide for the Praxis Core. I will review all of the content in the

guide, concentrating especially on the diagnostics suggestions for improvement. Finally, I plan to take the

Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam this coming December. I feel that, with the additional

preparation, I will pass
