The Nomad Hotel, located on 1170 Broadway, New York, New York, is a boutique hotel
that has 168 rooms. Amenities include a bar, restaurant, fitness center, laundry service, and
concierge service. French designer, Jacques Garcia, transformed the Beaux-Arts buildings
interiors into chic and modern spaces that blend European hospitality with a New York touch.
The suites include an iPod dock, flat screen TV, in-room safe, minibar, complementary
newspaper daily, ARGAN bathroom products, free internet access, showers in all suites, and a
clawfoot tub in some of them. The design of the spaces is very elegant, but with an edgy side. A
lot of the suites have a bathtub that sits right near the window and has no walls, only a folded-
screen divider, to separate the bathroom from the main living space. This adds to the edgy,
modern vibe of the design and creates a cozier atmosphere due to the smaller size of the suites.
The goal of the hotels design was to combine the old-world charm of classic European spaces
with modern elements and amenities. Hardwood floors in each suite adds a downtown-loft
Boutique hotels are quite different than other hotels. While most hotels are
larger in size and can hold well over 300 guest rooms, boutique hotels are smaller and more
intimate. The design is meant to attract very specific clients that have a certain aesthetic that
matches theirs. Typically, boutique hotels attract a more trendy, fashionable client who is
looking for a more design-savvy space to relax in and enjoy a more personal atmosphere. The
architecture and interior design of these hotels are very focused on a central idea and arent
trying to follow any trends in hotel design. Boutique hotels stand out more in their design
aesthetics (Anhar, 2001). The designers goal for this type of hotel is to stray away from the norm
and try to think outside of the box. While this type of design could possibly turn away customers,
it is meant to attract only those who understand and appreciate the design as a whole. Another
key feature in boutique hotel design is location. You often see boutique hotels in urban areas,
rather than rural areas. These hotels are specifically placed in convenient locations for the client
to be able to enjoy the best of both worlds, comfort and design, while being close to everything.

A resort Hotels purpose is to to offer an escape from everyday life. (Hotel Design
Planning and Development, Penner) People visit resort hotels to enjoy the finer things in life,
certain luxuries that are not always available in their daily lives. Typical amenities include; spas,
dedicated services, and luxurious atmospheres. The brand identity and design aspects reflect this
Figure 3 - <Disneyworld.disney.go.com>
The hotel attracts very high-end clientele, celebrities, and executive families. The hotel
offers a theme of 19th century Victorian Sea Resorts with exceptional Disney Experiences. The
resort is dedicated to guest experience, offering all the luxuries of resort experience. It offers
exemplary amenities which include; one of the best spas in the area, high employee to guest
ratio, and outstanding views. The pricing of the rooms are based on the specific amenities of the
floor and room. The standard rooms offer obscure views of the Magic Kingdom park, however
deluxe rooms offer garden views and extraordinary views of the theme park.
Figure 4 - <Disneyworld.disney.go.com>
The resort has many design elements for every guest. There are multiple buildings that
are 4 or 5 stories each and offer balconies where guests can relax and enjoy the views. The
architecture is period inspired by Floridas 19th century grand Victorian seaside resorts, complete
with white exterior trim and an impressive red shingle roof. It offers ornate details with
decorative lattice work, dormers and turrets. The resort can accommodate families in its 867
rooms complete with linens and dcor in a rich color scheme. Deep red, gold, and shades of
brown adorn every room. Standard rooms are approximately 440 square feet and include beds,
tv, daybed, reading chair, sofa, an office space, mini fridge, large dresser, and balcony.
Figure 5 - <Disneyworld.disney.go.com>
The Disney theme park also offers a club floor that caters to its deluxe guest and offers
them wine and a special intake area. The guests are also provided with security with a guest list
and sublime service. Guests are also able to visit the park earlier and later than other guests and
may take the special resort shuttle and railway into the park. Staff members are stationed at the
entrance of the railway to ensure guests qualifications and is a special amenity for the guests.

Is the hotel accessible for all users? In other words, ADA accessible?
Yes! There are ramps for any changes in elevation so wheelchair users can easily
access any space within the hotel. The flooring is also a non-slip flooring so there
arent any problems with getting around for the elderly and handicapped. All of
our bathrooms in each suite are also compliant with grab bars and easy-to-turn

I really love the design of the Alexandrian! Its very different than most hotels.
There is a warm, cozy feeling that you get as soon as you enter the lobby. I also
like the contrasting colors that are present in the reception area. The blue wall
color against the red desk is very interesting, but it works! Each guest suite is very
unique and interesting as well. Its all very relaxing and modern, but with

but there are a few things I would change, for example, what was the first
thing you noticed when you walked in? I responded by saying the

have a hard time seeing the reception area because there is no direct
sightline to it from the doors. The other area that can be a problem is the
lounge and bar area, we are open to the public but there is very limited
seating so when we have a full house and the public both we dont have
enough seating or standing room and often we lose sales because of it.
Do your guests have trouble finding their way around the hotel?

Do you feel there is enough room for guests with disabilities to get around
luggage, and other guests to all ride at the same time. I am not sure why
both of our elevators are not oversize because when you do have
someone who needs the extra space you have to hope the correct one

load and unload their cars. There is a hill leading up to the main door without a
curb so is wheelchair accessible, however the hill is fairly steep so I wonder how
accessible it would be if no parking spaces at the top of the hill are available.
There are no signs of handicap parking at the front of the building which is
problematic.
Upon arriving you are greeted by dual automatic glass doors with
luggage carriers on either side for easy access. Once inside of the building there
is a large open space with a reception desk to the right where guests may
check in. Directly adjacent to this area is a mini store where guests can buy
snacks, drinks, and personal hygiene products. Past this area is a large area with
tables and chairs which is connected to a nook that is utilized for breakfast. The
alcove is large providing counter tops around the 3 full walls and a partial wall
with a portion of countertop for a pancake machine. The smaller circular tables
are large enough for two guests each with a few larger rectangular tables that
can accommodate 4 people and more when pushed together. The style is
carpet whereas the rest of the public spaces are adorned with glossy white tiles.
Adjacent to the dining area is an alcove with two large elevators that are
ADA compliant and large. There is contemporary wood paneling on both with a
single chrome bar leading around it. The buttons are low enough for accessible

reach. Each floor of the hotel corresponds with the room number. On the first
floor are the 100s rooms, second floor the 200s, and third floor the 300s. There is
signage directing guest around the hotel and which area their rooms are with
arrows showing which rooms are in which direction. Upon exiting the elevator,
you see large painted numbers that correspond with the floor that you are
currently on. This is a clever wayfinding technique that will help guests finding
their location.
When you open your room door you walk into an opening where to the
left is a bathroom with a large counter, toilet, and a large glass shower. Walking
forward from the door there is a small nook with a cupboard, refrigerator, and
Keurig coffee maker. When traveling further into the room there is a large,
contemporary furnishing that is the same wood paneling as the elevator and it
includes a large wardrobe, tv stand with television, and a desk. On the opposite
side of the room there are two double beds clad in white sheets with the same
wood paneling connecting the two acting as a single headboard from one side
of the room to the other. In the center of this singular furnishing is a median sized
bedside table with a charging station complete with USB ports and outlets. To
the right of the furthest bed is a contemporary winged armchair. The wall
opposite to the entrance there is a single immense window with sheer curtains
and blinds within. On the sides of the window are heavier weight curtains to
The overall appearance of the hotel and room is very appealing and is

60,000 square feet that offers its guests an oasis to work, sleep, and eat in. The guests can relax at the
bar and caf or workout in the fitness center provided to guest. The hotel brand is technologically
advanced and innovative and so the design will reflect this fully with easy to use devices to improve the
experience of its guest. Sustainable finishes will highlight the forward-thinking owners that this hotel
represents. The hotel will target businesses from around the world and provide them a luxury
experience that will help refer New Wave to potential clientele. The concept of the design for this luxury
hotel is to provide a relaxing upscale environment for individuals to work and experience the rich
culture that is in Phoenix. The calming color scheme contrasts the energetic contemporary experience

For each preliminary floor plan, I made sure to incorporate the following design elements to ensure each option would be appropriate for all kinds
of users
Custom front desk with a lowered height on one side for wheelchair users.
All hallways leading to spaces are at least 5 feet wide for wheelchair turnarounds.
There are no sudden turns that would be hard to maneuver around.
All ADA bathrooms have a 5 foot turnaround and grab bars around toilets, as well as roll-in showers.
The front entrance features a turnstile door along with double doors to ensure all users can enter without having trouble.
Every retail space option provides enough room for all users to move around comfortably within the aisles.
Some of the ADA guest suite designs provide pocket doors for easier access.
All doorways are at least 36 inches wide.
There are multiple means of egress per floor, and all of them are less than 75 feet from the closest space.
The hotel is to include a caf, a retail space, exercise room, 2 ADA guest suites, managers office, and 12 guest suites per floor. All design options
include these spaces. The public areas, (retail, caf, and lobby), are all located within the same relative area in order to maintain a consistent
separation between public and private spaces. The managers office is close by, but still remains cut off from the public spaces to allow for privacy
and concentration. The exercise space is located on the second floor and has ample room for all of the required equipment.
For the occasional guests that want to rent out a co-working space for a week of meetings, there are several spaces that are left unmarked for
multiple uses. These spaces can be found on either the first or second floors of the different plans designed. The spaces are large enough to
accommodate a big group of people, which makes these spaces perfect for large meetings.
For safety and security, fire alarms will be installed in every space, as well as, sprinklers. Each guest suite will have a card-reader to gain access to
the spaces. All interior finishes will be fire rated and durable to ensure minimal damage and risk in case of an emergency. Emergency lights will be
provided in each hallway as well in case the power goes out. And signage will be placed above every exit, public space, elevator, and turns in order
to help people navigate through the building. Doors will also be fire rated. Security cameras will be placed in every hallway and public space.

Justification
Lobby Sketches These sketches show the contemporary, minimalist aesthetic that was established
from the beginning. The clean-lined furniture, along with the contemporary art creates a very high-end
atmosphere that is both sophisticated, and relaxing. The use of recessed forms connects the design to
the custom desk that was designed. This helps further bring out the hotels brand and wayfinding. The
color palette is very neutral with pops of cool tones, blue, purple, and green, in the art.
Caf Sketches The caf perspectives show how the aesthetic from the lobby is still carried over to this
space. However, the color palette is changed to create a more enticing, and vibrant design that will
encourage appetite. The texture on the wall is a grass cloth wallcovering that will help diminish noise in
this space, as well as, add some visual interest to the dining area. Again, recessed forms in the wall
allow for art to be displayed and highlighted with recessed lighting inside.
Hotel Room Sketches These sketches show how the texture of the carpet plays off of the texture of
the wallcovering. The color palette is very calming and uses blues and greens to accomplish this effect.
The wallcovering will help maintain sound control in this space. All of these elements help to create the
minimalist, contemporary aesthetic that was developed in the design phase.

This custom desk has recessed abstract forms. This reflects the sculpture that I chose to use as inspiration for my design.
The right side of the desk is lowered, which allows wheelchair users to use the desk without feeling out of place. A lowered
ceiling provides a means of wayfinding and adds visual interest to the space. Recessed forms are mimicked in the back wall,
enhancing wayfinding as well. Everything is very minimalist and bright, which stays consistent with the original design
concept and inspirational sculpture. For security, cameras will be provided at both sides of the desk in the ceiling.

Analysis Continued
After researching both furniture pieces and finish materials, I have come to realize that the two best
options are the sustainable armchair and the bamboo flooring. My reasoning for coming to this
decision was based off of the initial costs and the estimated life span of the products. Both
sustainable products last longer than their counterparts, which also ends up costing the client less
money in the long run due to their longer lives.

This class has given me a lot of information regarding hospitality design and I feel
all the more prepared for this type of design because of it. The three main
concepts that I feel will benefit me in the future are the following;
1.) Interviewing the client - It was so interesting to interview each client that
was part of this project and it really helped me get a sense for what the
needs of each person were. It also helps me figure out what areas need
design.
2.) Study models Although Im still not as comfortable with making study
models, I feel that this is a great tool to use in order to get a sense of the
actual space and how the furniture arrangements work in each area. This
also allows for me to figure out new or different ways to address ADA
3.) Providing multiple preliminary floor plans. While this may seem self-
creating the perfect design for the client. It can be easy to think that your
first design is the best one, but upon further examination and exploration,
I feel very inspired and confident in the new tools Ive learned through this
appreciate this type of design even more after taking this course. I also think
that creating perspective renderings really helps bring your vision to the client
as well. It can be difficult to explain to the client what your ideas are for a
space, but when you actually take the time to render the interiors, it allows
