History
The data storage is a must-have for nearly everyone. As technology has evolved, computers
have allowed for increasingly capacious and efficient data storage, which in turn has allowed
increasingly sophisticated ways to use it.
These include a variety of business applications, each with unique storage demands. The
storage used for long-term data archiving, in which the data will be very infrequently accessed,
might be different from the storage used for backup and restore or disaster recovery, in which
data needs to be frequently accessed or change.
None of these new data storage technologies would be possible, however, without a century of
steady scientific and engineering progress. From the invention of the magnetic tape in 1928 all
the way to the use of cloud today, advanced data storage has come a long way.

The Phasewriter Dual (PD) was the first device that used
phase-change technology to store digital data. Panasonic
introduced the Phasewriter Dual device in 1995. It was
replaced by the CD-ROM and DVD.

TODAY Cloud Data Storage
Definition
A medium for holding information (data, voice, video, etc.), such as tape and disk. The
medium can be erased and reused over and over again. In the digital world, information is
recorded by writing tiny spots (bits) of negative or positive polarity on tapes and disks. A
read/write head discharges electrical impulse onto the moving ferromagnetic surface.
Reading is accomplished by sensing the polarity of the bit with the read/write head.
Magnetic Tape
Magnetic tape is a large capacity, serial access medium. Because it is a serial access
medium, accessing individual files on a tape is slow.
Tapes are used where large amounts of data need to be stored, but where quick access to
individual files is not required. A typical use is for data back-up (lots of data, but rarely only
accessed in an emergency)
10
Tapes are also used and in some batch-processing applications (e.g. to hold the list of data
that will be processed).
Floppy Disc
A removable, portable, cheap, low-capacity (1.44MB) storage medium. Floppy discs are
random access devices used for transfer small amounts of data between computers, or to
back-up small files, etc. Access times are slow.
Almost every PC used to have a floppy disc drive. These are obsolete now, having been
replaced by higher capacity technology such as CD-ROMs, DVDs and USB memory sticks.
Zip Disc
A removable and portable storage medium, similar in appearance to a floppy disk, but with
a much higher capacity (100MB, 250MB or 750MB).
Zip discs are random access devices which were used for data back-up or moving large
files between computers.
Another obsolete storage device, zip discs were a popular replacement for floppy discs for
a few years, but they never caught on fully before being superseded by cheaper media like
CD-ROMs and CD-Rs.
Jaz Disc
A removable and portable storage medium based on hard-drive technology, with a large
capacity (1GB or 2GB).
Jaz discs are random access devices which were used for data back-up or moving large
files between computers.
Discs were expensive to buy and not very reliable.
Like the Zip disc, this system never really caught on and was superseded by far cheaper
and more reliable and cheaper technology.
2. Data can be read directly from any part of the hard disc.
3. In most of the magnetic storage devices the access speed is about 1000kb/s
4. Some of the magnetic storage devices are very cheap for example floppy disks.
5. Most of the magnetic storage devices store very large amounts of data.
11
Disadvantages of Magnetic storage devices
1) Data can be altered by magnetic fields, dust, mechanical problems
3) Hard disks eventually fail which stops the computer from working.
4) Regular crashes can damage the surface of the disk, leading to loss of data in that sector.
5) The disk is fixed inside the computer and cannot easily be transferred to another computer.
