Hurricane Irma was classified
as a category 5 disaster and
ripped through the Caribbe-
an, Florida, and much of the
southeastern region of the
United States. It killed 102
people and caused over $60

Over Chicano Park Murals

On Sunday September 3rd, an
anti-immigrant campaigner
organized an event called the
Patriot Picnic. Members of
the campaign rallied with the
intent of removing the icon-
ic artwork in Chicano Park.
In an email, organizer Roger
Ogden stated that the group
planned to eat lunch in Barrio
Logan at Chicano Park and
then tour the artwork.
Ogden is behind various an-
ti-immigrant and anti-Muslim
social media accounts and
websites. He also started an
email campaign to get rid of
the artwork present in Chica-
no Park. This initiative came
soon after Confederate mon-
uments were removed here
in San Diego and across the
country.
Chicano Park became a Na-
tional Historic Landmark in
January because it symboliz-
es the Latino community and
activism. When word got out
that the event was going to
occur, people came out to pro-
test in a counter-event called
the Solidarity Gathering.

Many activists and faith
leaders came out and spoke
about how culturally signifi-
cant the artwork in Chicano
Park is. Border Angels found-
er Enrique Morones stated
that the people trying to de-
face these murals are trying
to promote hate. Supporters
came out to defend the art-
work because it has high val-
ue and culturally represents
them.
When the event broke out,
police arrived and separat-
ed the groups. Ten minutes

Irma has smashed the records
previously set by 1992s Hur-
ricane Andrew, which had
been the most devastating
hurricane to hit Florida in
its history in terms of flood-
ing and damage. It is also the
strongest Cape Verde type
hurricane observed in the At-
lantic since 2005s Hurricane
Wilma.
Mexico Struck by Earthquake
and Hurricane Katia

On Thursday, September
7th, 2017 the Mexican states
of Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Ta-
basco were struck by an 8.1
magnitude earthquake kill-
ing 95 people. The epicenter
of the earthquake was locat-
ed off the southern coast of
Mexico and the event could
be felt as far as San Salvador
and Mexico City. 50 million
people are suspected to have
felt the temblor sparked by
what is being called the larg-
est earthquake to hit Mexico
in a century.
The earthquake is being
classified by scientists as
relatively shallow, measur-
ing 43 miles in depth. Shal-
low earthquakes correlate
to more shaking. The quake
triggered a small tsunami off
of Mexicos beaches that was
reported to be 3 feet tall by
the National Weather Ser-
vices Pacific Tsunami Warn-
ing Center.
A day after the earthquake
hit, category 1 Hurricane Ka-
tia unleashed heavy winds
and rains in the Mexican
state of Veracruz. Both nat-
ural disasters resulted in the
loss of power for 1.85 million

Mexican residents and a tem-
porary loss of water service
for others. In a response to
the initial reports of the di-
sasters, the US Geological
Survey PAGER System issued
a red alert and stated, High
casualties and extensive
damage are probable and the
disaster is likely widespread.
Past red alerts have required
a national or international
response.
President of Mexico, En-
rique Nieto, said Mexicos
military and police were
ready to respond and help
people involved.
Prior to the disasters, Mex-
ico stated it would send relief
to the United States in the
wake of Hurricane Harvey
which hit the United States
in August. However, Mexi-
co revoked their statement
with the Foreign Ministry
reporting, ...the Mexican
government will channel all
available logistical support
to the families and commu-
nities that have been affected
in Mexico. Mexico cited the
lessening need in Texas and
the growing need in Mexico
for emergency aid as reason
for not sending relief to the
United States as promised.
