Q - What is your education/
professional background ?
A - I grew up in North Caro-
lina and I attended Duke Uni-
versity in North Carolina, and
then transferred to Western
Michigan University to study
industrial design and then I
continued to Arizona State to
study art education.
Q - Why did you choose La
Jolla High School ?
A - Ive been teaching for
the past twenty years and for
the past ten years I taught art
at Clairemont High School.
Since Clairemont High School
downsized their art program,
and there was an opening at
La Jolla High School , I trans-
ferred to La Jolla High School.
Q - What they are you look-
ing forward to in this school
year ?
A - Throughout this school
year I hope to meet all my
students and find out who is
passionate about art and to
do some outside projects for
the next years Del Mar Fair. I
usually have an exhibit at the
fair.
Q - What do you hope the
students will accomplish this
year ?
A - In this year I would like
for the students to accomplish
a certain level of knowledge
for art and photography.
Q - Do you have any fun fact,
secret talents ect ?
A - Something that you may
not know about me that I can
play the harmonica, I also en-
joy juggling and hula hoop-
ing.
Q - Anything to add?
A - I am very happy to be at
La Jolla High School and hope
to have a great year ahead. I
feel very positive vibe from
everyone at this school.

TQ - What is your education/
professional background ?
A - Ive been teaching for
about twelve years, I started
to teach in Santa Ana where
I grew up for two years when
I earned my teaching creden-
tial at Chapman University,
and then I came down to San
Diego and I taught at a school
for Creative and Performing
Art for the district for eight
years. Most recently, I taught
at a private boarding school
in the Czech Republic for two
years and then I came to La
Jolla High School. Ive always
been math teacher.
Q - Why did you choose
LJHS ?
A - I choose LJHS because
the location is nice, I grew up
by the beach and I really like
the beach. I also really like the
weather and more important-
ly its a real solid community.
Ive been really impressed
with the student body in
these two weeks.
Q - What are you looking for-
ward to in this school year ?
A - I am looking forward to
coaching sports, more impor-
tantly soccer, because there
were no sports teams at the
school. I am also looking for-
ward to getting comfortable
with the new classroom, to
teach the students that math
and learning can be really
fun and entertaining, and to
enjoy interactive and student
centered lessons so I hope the
students can enjoy the class.
Q - What do you hope the
students will accomplish this
year ?
A - I hope all my students are
successful and for each stu-
dent success has a different
meaning.
Q - Do you have any fun fact,
secret talents ect ?
A - Its kinda interesting that
I ride my bicycle about ten
miles every morning to school
and something that I my stu-
dents dont know about me is
that I played professional soc-
cer while I was in the Czech
Republic.
Q - Anything to add?
A - Im happy to be at LJHS.

Disney Parts

A dream is a wish your

the Disney classic Cinderel-
la. Disneys new dream is to
leave Netflix and start their
own streaming platform. For
a long time one of the big-
gest streaming services in the
business has been Netflix. Its
known for many movies of
all types but soon, one wont
be offered anymore. After the
end of 2018 the beloved Dis-
ney movies will no longer be
offered on the service. This
includes all Disney and Pixar
movies. The Chief Executive
Officer of Disney said that
Netflixs relationship with
Disney is still strong, but they
wanted to start their own plat-
form to enter the streaming
business. Opening in 2019,
this new system will have all
the old and new Disney mov-
ies and will focus on making
new original series and mov-
ies. So binge on all the Disney
you want on Netflix until the
end of 2018, then be ready to
make the switch.

New UTC
Mall Apart-
ment Breaks
Ground

If you love the mall and never
want to leave, then the Uni-
versity Town Center apart-
ments are for you. The new
UTC apartments are opening
in 2019. The building will be
23 stories high with all the
amenities pool, spa, gym with
exercise classes, library, office
space, underground parking
and an outdoor cooking and
grilling station. The apart-
ments are also going to have
a top floor lounge with ocean
view and a sports bar with a
pool hall on the third floor.
This huge two hundred mil-
lion dollar project is going
into the space that used to be
the parking lot for UTC. This
new complex is supposed to
be good for business at the
mall. There is not a current
asking price for the rent al-
though the surrounding ar-
eas average rent is two thou-
sand six hundred and fifty
one dollars This is the first of
many buildings Westfield is
doing all over the world.

$200,000, J. J. Watt, the de-

Texans, has collected over
$31,000,000 for victims of
Hurricane Harvey in Hous-
ton. Using the website You-
Caring, Watt has been able to
receive donations from hun-
dreds of thousands of com-
passionate people across the
country. He and his fans have
shared this cause on social
media and other news outlets,
leading to a plethora of dona-
tions and support.
Ellen Degeneres, Tyler Per-
ry, Amy Adams Strunk, and
many more have individu-

donors include, Charles Butt,
the owner of a supermarket
chain in San Antonio, and the
Houston Rockets owner, Les-
lie Alexander, who have both
helped the flood victims.
When times are tough and
things look bleak, people step
up to help their fellow hu-

video on twitter. I want to
work right by the donors and
I also want to do right by the
city of Houston and the sur-
rounding areas to make sure
we help to rebuild as many
lives as possible.
Watt has been meeting
with organizations and the
military to make sure that the

ties, millions of dollars have
been contributed to those
families who have lost almost
everything. These efforts will
go far in restoring the life
these people held so precious-
ly before it was ripped away
from them.
Author speaks at local charity luncheon about novel inspiration

On September 17, 2017, Sir
Salman Rushdie, an acclaimed
novelist, addressed hundreds,
and promoted his new nov-
el, The Golden House, at
the 14th Annual Words Alive
Luncheon, an organization
that promotes literacy for un-
derprivileged youth.
Rushdie gained fame for
his 1981 novel, Midnights
Children, about Britains col-
onization of India. Rushdie
won the Booker Prize, and
the Booker of Bookers for this
work, being noted as one of
the best novels ever written.
However, Rushdie claimed
international fame and con-
troversy for his most famous
novel, The Satanic Verses,
in which he espoused his be-
liefs on the Islamic faith. The
title of the book, refers to a
sacred aspect of the Quran
that is said cannot be replicat-
ed. Thus, Rushdies decision
to republish these verses,
is figuratively considered a
crime to the Muslim people.
Additionally, Rushdie used
important characters in the
Quran in a derogatory fic-
tional manner, assigning re-
ligious names to prostitutes
and murders. After the pub-
lication of this novel, many
Muslim countries banned
this work, Rushdie received
numerous death threats, and
Rushdie was ordered by the
British government to be in
hiding for 10 years. None-
theless, Rushdies novels
are works of art and inspire
many.
At the luncheon, moderator,
Steve Lerer, led the discussion
with Rushdie, promoting in-
sightful and interesting ques-
tions about the premise and
inspiration of his new novel.
Rushdie noted that his major
inspiration for all of his work
is Charles Dickens, because
he imitates life in his sto-
ries; therefore, Rushdie said,
A novel is a mirror walking
down the road. His new nov-
el, The Golden House, paral-
lels current events and allows
them to play an integral role
in the novel.
The novels main theme is
the concept of how someone
can be both good and evil.
The novel follows a father
and his two sons who move
to a new apartment in New
York City. Similarly to Alfred
Hitchcocks film, Rear Win-
dow, all of the residents of
this apartment complex are
able to watch one another.
The novel is told from the per-
spective of an aspiring film-
maker, who watches his new
neighbors with intrigue.
