UCSD Holds Black Student
Union Conference
San Diego High School Students Attend 27th Annual Event

On November 11th of 2017,
the University of California
of California at San Diego
hosted its 27th annual Black
Student Union High School
Conference. The event was
held in the campuss Price
Center Theater and other
rooms in the Price Center. The
current members of UCSDs
Black Student Union planned
a day for high school stu-
dents from different schools
in San Diego, California, and
even different countries. The
event lasted from 9am to 4pm
and was filled with a packed
schedule of information and
activities including different
workshops, classes, and cau-
cuses.
When students arrived at
the Price Center, they were
greeted with gift bags and a
breakfast buffet. After break-
fast, the students entered
the Price Center Theater to
listen to the first speaker of

Halt Yearbook Class

Over the last two months
the internet in Room 515 has
been extremely slow. This
slow internet has resulted in
a delay in yearbook pages.
LJHS Network Systems and
Media Support Technician Jo-
han Ohlund has been working
on the issue and over the past
week the connection has im-
proved and students are now
able to work on their pages.
In yearbook, students are
assigned page numbers and a
due date and if the pages are
not turned in on time it caus-
es problems for the teacher as
well as delays to the produc-
tion of the yearbook.
When the class does not
meet the deadlines, the year-
book doesnt come out on
time, meaning that the se-
niors will get their yearbook
after they graduate.
There have been problems
with the internet in the past,
but they have never been this
bad. When the internet is
slow, students cant even log
onto the online program.

The mother of a student
at Cathedral Catholic High
School was arrested over a
month ago on charges relat-
ing to selling and distributing
drugs to students around San
Diego campuses.
Kimberly Dawn Quach, 48,
was arrested at her home in
Carmel Valley on September
28. The original charges were
maintaining a drug house,
selling marijuana and narcot-

have been notified of the sit-
uation and its severity and
asked if they have any infor-
mation of Quach selling drugs
or narcotics in their school.
Quach has been placed in
a jail outside of Santee and
is on a $200,000 bail. If she is
convicted of the charges, she
faces up to 60 years in prison.

fore it is unjust, illegal, and
immoral to refuse service to
people based solely on sexu-
al orientation. Colorado even
has a law that protects people
from being refused service
based on their sexual orien-
tation, and this law was bro-
ken by the baker. Every court
has agreed with the couple. In
2013 when they went to the
Colorado Office of Adminis-
trative Courts, Judge Robert
N. Spencer ruled in favor of
the couple, stating that Phil-
lips had broken the discrim-
ination law. When the Colo-
rado Civil Rights Commission
took a look at the case in May
2014, they found that the bak-
er was in violation of Colora-
dos Anti-Discrimination Act.
The Colorado Supreme Court

2015, Jack Phillips appealed
to the Supreme Court which

Should the School Dresscode
be Enforced?

Recently, La Jolla High
School has decided to enforce
the school dress code strict-
er than in the past. In recent
years, though it was expect-
ed of students to follow the
dress code, very few students,
teachers, and faculty members
enforced or acknowledged
it. Unified school districts
state, The purpose of a dress
code is to provide guidance
to students and parents as to
appropriate attire for school
and at any school function.
In addition, the dress code is
a primary means of helping
students learn a skill, which
is required for success in get-
ting and keeping employment
linked to attire.
Now that the dress code
is taken more seriously, stu-
dents were asked to share

Teachers on Administrative Leave
Over the past couple years, multiple teachers have been put on administrative leave. Their
temporary absence is harmful to students learning and actions should be taken against this
coming and going of teachers.

When a teacher is put on
administrative leave, they
could be gone for a long pe-
riod of time and still get paid.
Depending on the cause for
the leave, the teachers ab-
sence varies. At La Jolla high
there have recently been in-
stances of teachers being put
on administrative leave. This
can affect students learning.
For instance, last year a teach-
er was put on administrative
leave for a full semester. The

ther improve our schools at-
mosphere or it is possible that
it can make students more
upset.
The dress code is supposed
to be a way for kids to be able
to show their own style while
wearing appropriate clothing.
However, there is a lot of con-
troversy. Dress codes can help
exclude drama and peer pres-
sure but students may also feel
limited and out of options. At
the beginning and end of the
school year, many students
have been frustrated with the
unbearable heat at Muirlands
Middle School because of the
overly enforced dress code. It
is hard to stay cool in non air-
conditioned schools while not
being able to wear shorts. It
is possible that some teachers
might feel obligated to agree
with and enforce the dress
code because they do not
want to cause problems with
the office. Some, like many
students, might think that the
rules are too harsh but it is
hard to say for sure.

Fundraising
Fundraising For You

As more and more students
start clubs at La Jolla High
School, the Associated Stu-
dent Body (ASB) wants to en-
sure that the fundraising pro-
cess is clear. An overview of
the steps needed to fundraise
is listed under the club sec-
tion of the students tab of
the La Jolla High School web-
site.
Clubs fundraise for a vari-
ety of reasons, whether they
are raising money for char-
ity or they are raising mon-
ey to purchase merchandise;
regardless, it is important to
know how the process works.
Any official La Jolla High
School Club can fundraise so
long as they follow the subse-
quent guidelines.
Prior to the fundraiser,
clubs need to hold a meeting
where they discuss the poten-
tial fundraising event. Some
possible events include: ar-
ranging for a percentage of a
restaurants profit to go to the
club, selling T-shirts, or sell-
ing other types of merchan-
dise. During the club meeting,
a member of the club must
make an official motion to
have the fundraiser and this
motion must be seconded by
another member of the club.
These items should be out-
lined in the official club min-
utes form which can be print-
ed from the bottom of LJHS
ASB website.
Next, clubs must fill out
a fundraising application
(which can be downloaded off
of the ASB website). It is im-
portant that this is completed
and submitted along with the
minutes form to the yellow
box in room 803 (ASB) at least
four weeks before the fund-
raiser is going to take place,
so that the event can be ap-
proved by ASB, the finance of-
fice, and the principal. When
the fundraiser is approved by
the ASB executive committee,
club presidents will receive
an email notifying them that
their fundraiser has passed
the first step to official and
complete approval. Receiving
this email does not mean that
the fundraiser can take place;
getting approved by ASB is
only step one in a three-step

process. If there are errors in
the form, an email will be sent
to club presidents explaining
what is wrong with the appli-
cation and what needs to be
corrected.
Fundraising forms that are
approved by ASB are sent to
the finance office where they
are examined and then sent to
the principal to sign. Once ap-
proved by both the principal
and the finance office, clubs
will receive another email
confirming that the fundrais-
er can occur as planned.
During the fundraiser,
money can be collected in the
form of cash or check-checks
must be written out to LJHS
ASB and have the club
name in the memo. If selling
items at an event, a cash box
may be needed; these must be
requested a minimum of three
days prior to the fundraiser
taking place.
After the fundraiser, clubs
normally deposit the money
raised. All official clubs have
an account through La Jolla
High School. To deposit mon-
ey, clubs must hold a meeting
and vote on whether or not to
make the deposit. If this vote
passes, a motion has to be
made, seconded, and recorded
in a new set of club minutes.
Finally, a Revenue Potential
Analysis form and a Deposit
form must be filled out and
submitted to the finance of-
fice; the former can be found
on the ASB website and the
latter can be found in room
803.
Some clubs decide to take
money out of their account
to send to community service
organizations or to pay for
merchandise. In order to take
money out of an account, a
requisition form is needed
which can be found in room
803. Once completed, another
set of club minutes must be
submitted to the finance of-
fice that includes a motion to
take money out of the clubs
account.
Fundraising is a great way
to make a profit and broad-
en your clubs influence or
experience; following the
aforementioned guidelines
will ensure the process goes
smoothly.

ery driver will arrive at your

Gummy Bears

Haribo produces many vari-
eties and kinds of gummy prod-
ucts. It is very popular around
the world with children and
adults alike. Recently, Haribo
has been accused of using ingre-
dients in their candy that have
been produced by slave labor
on various farms in Brazil. In a
gummy bear, one of the princi-
ple ingredients is carnauba wax.
To harvest the wax, workers
must take it from the carnauba
palm trees. The conditions that
the workers live in are less than
optimal. They make very little
pay and have no clean drink-
ing water, and have no protec-
tion from the elements outside
in their working environment.
Haribo has stated that it was
not aware of any bad conditions
going on with the workers sup-
plying them with their essential
ingredients.
Another key ingredient in
Gummy bears is gelatin. Gela-
tin is made from many different
body parts of pigs. Haribo also
obtains gelatin from farms in
Brazil. These farms have been
exposed in that their animals
are kept in very unhealthy and
unacceptable conditions. Their
living quarters are covered in
their feces, and even dead pigs
are left in the pen.
In order to get rid of these in-
justices on the many farms, the
Brazilian government is doing
unannounced visits on farms.
They will then investigate and
make sure no slave labor or cru-
elty to animals is occurring. To
fix this ongoing problem, Har-
ibo must work together with
Brazil to ensure that all labor is

credibility with customers.

EasyJet, an airline out of the
United Kingdom, has agreed
to pay 40 million Euros to buy
some assets from the German
airline Air Berlin.
In August of this year, Air
Berlin filed for insolvency
after its partner, Etihad Air-
ways, announced that they
would not continue providing
the German company with fi-
nancial support. The deal be-
tween EasyJet and Air Berlin
comes after Air Berlin sold
its Australian branch, Niki, to
Lufthansa.
With the purchase from Air
Berlin, EasyJet is set to ac-
quire landing slots at Berlin
Tegel Airport and leases for a
variety of Airbus 320 aircraft.
The deal has yet to be offi-
cially approved; this approval
will most likely be announced
in December. 1,000 work-
ers from Air Berlin would be
picked up by Easy Jet, the
company reports, but these
workers will still be subject

need to worry about budget-
ing? and some of you prob-
ably dont need to, or ever
will need to budget. However,
for the rest of us, budgeting
will be a large part of life. As
you grow older and move out
from under the wing of your
parents, you will need to get
a job and be financially viable.
Understanding the impor-
tance of budgeting will allow
you to live a comfortable that
doesnt require you to live
paycheck to paycheck, always
worried about bills you have
to pay.
This article will illuminate
specific strategies and give
you tips to master budgeting
and become financially suc-
cessful. So what is budgeting?
Budgeting is making sure you
dont spend more than you
acquire. When budgeting, it
is essential to prepare for the
short term and long term.
One problem many people
have is thinking of budgeting
as a diet and associating bud-
geting with cutting out things
from our lives. However, that
is not the case. Budgeting
should be compared with a
program of spending. Budget-
ing is a preparatory approach
to finance, rather than a reac-
tive approach.
As high schoolers, you will
not have a steady job with
a regular income because
school is your job and your
only steady pay, is the income
of homework. Nevertheless,
eventually, you will need to
budget. The first thing you
should do is make short and
long-term goals; a budget will
help you with this. Short and
long-term goals are easily es-
tablished when you are orga-
nized with your expenses. For
instance, using some spread-
sheet or an app that shows
you how much you are plan-
ning to make over the next
period and how much you are
going to spend over that time.
If you have a system, you can
look ahead and see what you
might need to cut back on,
and when. Having this sys-
tem is the easiest way to stay
on top of your financial situ-
ation. Updating and consis-
tently using your budgeting
system will be hard to do, but
the more you use the system,
the better and more natural it
becomes.
What happens when there
is a crisis you were not able
to foresee in your budgeting
system? What if, while driv-
ing to work, you get into a car
accident and now have to pay
the mechanic $300? The first
step would be to see if you
can move around any other of
your expenses like instead of
paying $400 a month for food,
you spend $250. Or you can
postpone other bills a month
so that you can pay for the
repairs. Another option is
spreading the repair bill over
some time, spending it incre-
mentally. However, being pre-
cautionary is always best, and
with each paycheck you get, a
little of it should be put into a
rainy day fund.
If you take money out of
your paycheck, whenever
you get one, you will have
the freedom at any time. It is
not wise to spend half of your
paycheck on bills and then
the other half on consumables
and other unnecessary expen-
ditures. If you take out some
money from each paycheck,
you have the freedom to do
many different things, such
as taking a vacation, starting
your own business, quitting
your job and pursuing your
dream, or even going back to
school. Its a means of achiev-
ing any of your goals.
So, how do you set one
up? There are many different
ways to set one up, as men-
tioned previously in this ar-
ticle. The most basic idea of
setting up a budget, a method
that everyone can use is pa-
per and a pen. You can car-
ry your budget around with
you, wherever you go. You
wont have to worry about
electronic failure, which may
cause you to lose all of your
information. However, there
are some downsides to this
method, including misplac-
ing your notebook or making
simple mistakes a comput-
er could quickly catch. Also,
there are no shortcuts or for-
mulas readily accessible to
use, unlike on a laptop. The
next method of organization
is using a simple spreadsheet.
With spreadsheets you are
less likely to make mistakes
and do easy calculations.
There are also a variety of
programs that can keep track
of how much money you have
left in that month, week or
year. A step up from the sim-
ple spreadsheet is a desktop
software. There is much soft-
ware that you can download,
but they cost money. How-
ever, they can do a lot more
than a spreadsheet and have
more focused programs that
will help you with your bud-
geting. You can also find pro-
grams online that offer simi-
lar programs as the desktop
software, but can sometimes
be free. Lastly, you can find
smartphone applications that
will help you budget. Wally+,
Acorns, Toshl Finance, and
Pocket Expense are all great
examples of mobile financial
apps.
Using your budget is the
next step, once you have
found your desired mode of
recording. The main rule is
to keep track of every ex-
pense, including the small
ones. Keeping receipts of ev-
erything you get is very im-
portant because it is a backup
copy if you lose all other re-

daily, tracking your mon-
ey so that you dont have to
scramble through expenses at

by planning if you know that

yourself so much that you are
always miserable as if you

one become a CEO?
The first step to becoming
a CEO is to obtain a bach-
elors degree. Typically in
either liberal arts, business
administration, or admin-
istration. Next, an aspiring
CEO should complete a mas-
ters degree program where
they should acquire an MBA
(Masters in Business Ad-
ministration) or a similar
degree . The third step is to
gain experience. Typically
you need to begin in lower
level management positions
in order to work their way
up in the business and learn
how to navigate the field.
Finally, many CEOs con-
sider voluntary certification
which demonstrates their

What to expect this Winter Season

With November almost
over, the fall sports season is
coming to an end. Teams may
be battling for CIF champi-
onships or even state titles,
but just around the corner is
something exciting. The sea-
son of winter sports is begin-
ning.
Looking back at last years
winter season, many of the
La Jolla High boys and girls
soccer teams made it very far
in CIF Championship, in very
dramatic fashion to say the
least.
The boys team won a thrill-
ing game against Helix 4-3,
to make it to the semis where
they just fell short against
Del Norte, losing 3-1. This
year some may look at it as a

graduating. Some young
players look to fill those se-
niors roles and make a large
impact this season. The team
still has a lot of talent and
looks to compete this year
to win the CIF championship
that they were so close to
getting last year.
The girls team came off of

yea, winning a CIF title with
a win over West Hills. They
took down West Hills, the
number one seeded team
with a score of 2-1. Like the
boys team, they lost a few
seniors who made large im-
pacts in that CIF title run.
With the team this year
mostly built of juniors and
seniors, younger players are
going to be looking to make
an impact on the varsity lev-
el. The team opens up against
Santana High School on No-
vember 30th.
The La Jolla High School
wrestling team opens up
competition this winter as
well. They have been weight
training with Coach Leon-
ard over the last few months
to get ready for the season.
They are lead by senior Elliot
Austin. Coach Lindenblatt
will not be coaching this year
due to his military duties.
The team looks to fight for a
chance at a CIF title and con-
tend with some large schools
around San Diego.
The boys basketball team
is coming off a crazy season
from last year. The team went
18-9 overall and 5-5 in league.
They had a short run in CIF
but surely made the most of it
winning their opening round
game against Valhalla 44-41
in overtime. The big ques-
tion is how will the team do
this year without the star of
last years senior class. Los-
ing now Harvard basketball
player Reed Farley leaves a
large hole open for the team.
Even though he was injured
during the second half of the
season last year, the question
is still up for grab in who will
take over the star role on the
team.
Girls basketball is looking
to bounce back after a rough
year last year. The team
went 2-21 overall and 1-11
in league play. This season is
up for grabs as they open up
against Carlsbad on Novem-
ber 28. They certainly arent
trying to repeat last year and
look to get La Jolla girls bas-
ketball back on the map and
compete with schools around
San Diego. The lady vikes are
in high hopes for this coming
season.
Girls water polo begins
during the winter and look
to continue to dominate their
opponents. Mastermind Tom
Atwell looks to continue his
winning ways and lead the
team to a CIF title. Last year
the team went 26-4 and made
it to the CIF championship
game. They killed Westview
and Carlsbad in the quarter-
final and semifinal games.
They played major rivals
Bishops in the final and lost
a thriller 3-2. With a young
team coming in this year,
they are in high hopes again
for a long run in CIF.

New Soccer Stadium in UCLA in China

new idea has been proposed
to bring a North American
Soccer League team to a per-
manent stadium. The team
is being completely creat-
ed from scratch with a new
coach, manager, and of course
players. The new stadium
will be built on SoCal Sports
Complex which already has
22 multi-use fields. The new
stadium will have 10,000 seats
and be the home field to the
1904 FC. There are many dif-
ferent opinions on building
this new stadium. Some op-
pose it because they believe
that taxes will rise to make
funds to pay for the stadium.

Dont Blame Darvish A look Back on Fall Sports

fault. Hes not to blame for
their inability to score more
than a single run in game sev-
en, or their fall to a team that
bested them when it mattered
the most.
The five runs that Darvish
gave up in the first two in-
nings of game seven shouldnt
have come as a surprise to
Dave Roberts. In 2016, during
his previous postseason run
with the Rangers, 11.6% of
the runs Darvish gave up that
season were in postseason
play. Again, in just one game,
just one year ago, Darvish
gave up five runs in a matter
of only a few innings. And
in Darvishs 9 starts for the
Dodgers this season, hes giv-
en up an average of 2.22 runs
per game, a sharp contrast to
Astros starting pitcher Justin
Verlanders average of .8 runs
per game. For the Rangers,
he didnt do any better; Dar-
vish pitched for an average of
2.86 runs per game during his
22 starts for the Rangers this
season.
In Darvishs first ever
World Series start, he pitched
less than two innings. And
worse, he allowed four runs
in that short window. Roberts
may not have known if it was
just nerves or if Darvish was
really not fit to pitch, but after
enduring a painful inning and
(less than) a half, pulled Dar-
vish. You cant blame Roberts
for starting him and not pull-
ing him out earlier; Darvish is
an undeniably great pitcher
and this start was uncharac-
teristic.
However, when Darvish
gave up three runs in the first
inning of game seven, Roberts
and the rest of the Dodgers

recognized that this was a

The restaurants in La Jolla
keep on changing. Many new
restaurants are added to the
lineup of restaurants in the La
Jolla village, as well as ones
that are returning. Some of
these restaurants include:
Himitsu,which opened in
October 2017, is a traditional
Sushi Bar. The owners of this
restaurant, Julian Hakim and
Aram Baloyan, are the same
owners as Taco Stand. The
menu of this restaurants in-
cludes authentic dishes, tradi-
tional nigiri sushi along with
small Japanese style appetiz-
ers.
Originally from Tel Aviv,
Burgerim is now in La Jolla.

giving, San Diego is hosting
numerous charitable events
for its citizens. People will be
able to volunteer for beach
cleanups, food banks, the hu-
mane society, fun runs, and
more. Throughout November,
the San Diego Food Bank is
accepting volunteers to help
package foods that will be sent
out to those in need. There
are very few steps to register-
those who are interested can
easily register at the SD Food
Bank website. Anyone who is
under the age of 16 is required
to have a parent or guardian
with them. On Thanksgiving
day, the San Diego Run for
the Hungry is holding a 5k
and 10k run in Downtown
San Diego. Their website

sion destroyed both aircraft
killing a total of twelve men.
Monaco recounts another
daunting mission flown over
Vietnam involving a group of
fighter pilots and his KC-135.
Most fighters, according to
Don, were stationed in South
Vietnam, Thailand, and the
Philippines, where the only
runways available were short
and did not offer a lot of room
for takeoff. Consequently,
fighters could not take off
with both bombs and full fuel;
instead, fighters would take
off with only a small amount
of fuel and meet a KC-135 in
the air. One day, as his KC-
135 was helping to refuel
fighters from the Philippines,
a typhoon was reported over
Okinawa making it unsafe for
Monaco to fly back to Oki-
nawa. Monaco was diverted
to the Philippines where he
expected to spend the night
and travel back to Okinawa
the next day. However, at 4
am Monaco was woken up
by a knock on his door and
a message sent directly from
President Lyndon B. John-
son. The message authorized,
for the first time, the cross-
ing of Air Force planes into
North Vietnam. Monaco and
his crew quickly ate break-
fast with the six fighter pilots
who were to accompany him
on the mission. After crossing
into North Vietnam, the fight-
er pilots descended to 200 feet
in the middle of a valley, or-
dered to destroy anti-aircraft
guns whose last known po-
sition was on the left side of
the valley. Unfortunately, the
anti-aircraft guns had moved
to the right side of the valley
overnight and the fighters
were sitting ducks at 200
feet. Four of the six fighters
were shot down. That night,
Monaco ate dinner at the of-
ficers club at Clark Air Base
in the Philippines with two
pilots instead of six. That
math, Monaco reports,
showed him that this was
real war.
Despite Monacos coura-
geous stories, he asserts he

was only a small part of the
United States mission, stat-
ing, I made as big an impact
as was possible for me and
my crew. But, when you look
at the whole war...it was very,
very little. Just a small piece of
the puzzle, but a golden piece.
We did what we were asked
to do, and we did a good job.
When he left the Air Force,
Monaco joined the airline Pan
Am, flying 707s, 747s, and
727s. Regardless of all he has
given for his country, Monaco
continues to give to his com-
munity, mentoring juveniles
on probation and spending
three months out of the year
in Guatemala working on a
variety of service projects.
When asked why he gives so
much back to a community
that he has already sacrificed
so much for, Monaco replied,
Because I can. It makes me
feel like an important part of
the world.
It is because of people like
Monaco, that we celebrate
Veterans Day and the people
who have made our country
what it is today.

UTCs Major Makeover

The University Town Cen-
ter mall went through its
first big change, a $180-mil-
lion makeover which added
a ArcLight Cinemas and, a
new food court with more
options, in November of
2012. This year, the mall went
through a $600-million ren-
ovation. During the renova-
tion, many new stores were
added to the current list of
UTC stores, some of those
stores and restaurants includ-
ing, luxury furniture-maker
Arhaus, comfy-clothes line
Marine Layer and fine-dining
establishment Larsens Steak-
house, crystal jewelry-maker
Swarovski, footwear chain
ECCO and MAC Cosmetics
as the La Jolla Light stated.
The new Nordstrom debuted
in early October, and is one of
the malls newest jewels, com-
plete with 250,000 square feet
of additional retail and restau-
rant space. In the new Nord-
strom they have added many
new designer brand boutiques
for example, Gucci, Valenti-
no, Saint Laurent, and Chloe,
which are located inside the
store. Most of the malls slat-
ed restaurants will be of the
sit-down and relaxed type. In
addition, there will be new
gardens, and places for chil-
dren to have fun. In addition,
the city of San Diego wants to
construct a 22-story high res-
idential tower, featuring 300
units, in the upcoming year of
2018. This apartment building
will be located in one of the
malls old parking lots.

Boardwalk Dedicated to Walter Munk

As of October 18th, the
La Jolla Shores boardwalk
has been renamed to Wal-
ter Munk Way, honoring the
scientist who has advanced
oceanography that changed
the course of history.
The city decided on hon-
oring Munk with the board-
walk as a part of the new
street naming program. The
honorary street names do
not change the official street
names. A requirement for
honoring someone or an or-
ganization, is that they have
to have been operating in San
Diego for at least 25 years.
Walter Munk has surpassed
that requirement.
During World War II, Munk
researched wave forecasting
that helped allied forces with
amphibious landings, includ-
ing the invasion of Norman-
dy. Munk has also made crit-
ical contributions to Scripps
research during the 1950s
through the 60s. He has been
awarded the National Medal
Black Student Union Conference at UCSD

students attended different
workshops which the mem-
bers of UCSDs Black Student
Union created and presented.
The first workshop was Fi-
nancial Aid and Admissions,
which was held in the Price
Center Theater. Here, stu-
dents learned about which fi-
nancial aid options were best
fit for them at UCSD and oth-
er colleges. They also received
advice for applying to col-
lege. At the Intersectionality
workshop, in the 6th College
Room, students shared ways
in that they embrace their
cultures, and learned about
their own and others identi-
ties. Next was the Self Care
workshop, held in the Gov-
ernance Chambers. Students
participated in an interactive
presentation about mental
and physical health, and how
each student found a holistic
balance between both. After
the presentation was an activ-
ity where each student would
give a self-affirmation, and
would affirm one other per-
son in the room. In the ERC
Room, students attended Ac-
tivism and its Powers of Em-
powerment. Here, the group

important for the black youth

He has met with the 14th

October 26th, Prince Albert
II visited Walter Munk Way.

oceanic problems as the royal

let their voices be heard and
acknowledged. Last, students
attended a workshop on Be-
ing a Black Engineer in the
Earl Warren Room where
they worked together to cre-
ate an invention to stop air
pollution.
Much to the groups surprise,
the BSU planned a very con-
densed hip-hop dance class.
Although most were reluctant
to join at first, the majority
of the group was eventual-
ly dancing with smiles, and
were even challenging others
to dance-offs.
After the dance class, students
split into smaller groups for
a tour of the UCSDs cam-

The event drew a large crowd
of people from both the sci-
ence community and the local
community.
Locally, Walter Munk estab-
lished credibility to San Diego
as a proper scientific research
city. Due to his extensive
work with Scripps and Uni-
versity of San Diego, Walter
Munk Way was made possi-
ble by the city of San Diego.
The honorary name change
required support from a rep-
resentative council member
from the area and local com-
munity members.

groups provided entertain-
ment for the students. The
first group consisted of the
members of San Diego State
Universitys Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity. This group
performed their own chore-
ography while incorporating
original spoken word poetry.
The next group was a West
African girl group known as
Afrobeats. They performed
a traditional West African
dance to indigenous music.
Following lunch was the
gender caucuses. The stu-
dents separated into groups
of those who identified as fe-
male, male, and gender non-
conforming/queer. In the fe-
male group, they began with
an activity where groups
were assembled based on if
the person related to different
statements. After the activity
was an open discussion based
around intersectionality and
how it affects a black females
life in educational and social
environments. This allowed
for each individual to share
personal stories on the strug-
gles they have faced grow-
ing up as a black female, and
problems they continue to

Many surfers and swim-
mers at Imperial Beach, in-
cluding the city mayor, be-
came very sick because of
a sewage spill from Tijuana
that started on October 26.
There was no advance notice
from Mexico which was why
so many people fell ill. It is
unclear how many became ill
but symptoms included burns
from heavy metals, rashes,
and E. coli poisoning.

This year marks the 50th sea-

House of Cards
Suspension

Kevin Spacey has been sus-
pended indefinitely alongside
the production of the Netflix
drama, House of Cards, after
claims of his sexual assault es-
calated over the week of No-
vember 30th. Producer Media
Rights Capital took immediate
action by suspending Spacey
on the evening of Friday the
3rd; supposedly the first step
towards his eventual termi-
nation. Netflix accordingly
stated that the hit show will
end after its upcoming sixth
season. The companies have
stated that MRC and Netflix
have decided to suspend pro-
duction on House of Cards
Season Six, until further no-
tice, to give us time to review
the current situation and to
address any concerns of our
cast and crew.
The studio is currently investi-
gating the serious allegations
concerning the actors behav-
ior on set. It followed actor
Anthony Rapps allegation in
an interview with Buzzfeed
that 26 year-old Spacey made

King

The original Disney film
and play, The Lion King fol-
lows the adventures of a
young lion named Simba and
his father Mufasa. As the sto-
ry progresses, Simba ages and
becomes a wise lion, despite
the death of his father. As the
cast members of this play age,
new actors are being brought
into the scene. Joe Favreau
is the new film director, pro-
ceeding with a due date of the
new film coming out in the
summer of 2019. Favreau is
also the previous director of
the live action rendition, The
Jungle Book.
Fans are going ecstatic
over the new cast of this film.
The movie will be out just in
time for The Lion Kings 25th
anniversary. There are many

and publicist Staci Wolfe both
dropped the actor.

Miss Burma Rolling Loud

A day spent with the author of Miss Burma

Club on November 1st, I

Charmaine Craig along with
four students in my Journal-
ism class. As guests of La Jolla
Literary Societys luncheon,
we got to sit at a round ta-
ble with Craig and ask her
questions about her new best-
seller, Miss Burma. Before-
hand, we had researched oth-
er works of Craigs to prepare
for the interview. Not only is
Miss Burma her second nov-
el, but she was also an actress
before switching professions.
She has starred in the movies
Bulletproof (1996), White
Fang 2 (1994), and Pocahon-
tas (1995). In Pocahontas,
she served as the model for
the Disney princess herself.

ballroom, she was introduced
with a letter written by one
of her students. It recognized
her for her positive impact
on students as an exemplary
novelist and person, and mor-
phed into a comical dialogue
of what the student suspects
a morning would be like be-
tween two writers; Craig and
her husband.
Curious as to how her pas-
sion for acting led her on the
path to be an author, I asked
her how her acting influenced
her writing and if so, wheth-
er these skills overlapped. As
Craig did throughout the en-
tire meeting, she responded
in a authentic and thoughtful
way; discussing how she is
drawn to human psychology
and the experience of step-

book would be solely fiction;
a break from the dedicated re-
search it takes to write histor-
ically accurate novels.
In her first rendition, Craig
mainly focused on the per-
sonal side of the story, as the
characters are her own family
members. However, after sub-
mitting the piece to her edi-
tor who said it needed work,
she almost doubled the book
in size. After a few more peo-
ple read it and gave mixed re-
views, she felt an obligation
to share the largely untold
history of Burma; a missed
opportunity in the first piece.
Since she knew that the sto-
ry wouldnt connect with the
American readership whom
was unaware of the political
and societal landscape of Bur-
ma, she completely scrapped
the first rendition and wrote
the book that is now a best-
seller. While writing, Craig
traveled to Burma a few times
to gain local knowledge of
happenings, analyzed de-
classified government docu-
ments, and talked with var-
ious family members. When
we asked her about how her
family reacted to the prop-
osition of their story being
published, she told us that her
mother said it should be fic-
tional and agreed that there
was a moral need to share
Burmas history. In doing so,
however, she has put her own
safety at risk. Since Miss Bur-
ma came out, Craig has been
trolled on social media and
her translator in Burma said
he will leave out some polit-
ical plot points of the book
as to not get in trouble with

Throughout the year, the
most famous hip hop artists
perform the country and the
world. They travel around
booking gigs and spreading
their music around the world,
but a few times a year these
artists and rappers gather to
perform all at the same event.
On December 16-17, in San
Bernardino California, these
world known hip hop artist
will gather at the Nos Events
Center and put on a perfor-
mance for a wide diverse
crowd at the Rolling Loud fes-
tival.
Rolling Loud is performed in
five different cities over the
span of two years. Earlier this
year, the event was held in the
Bay Area. Now it is time for
Southern California to enjoy.
Early in 2018 the concert will
move to the UK, then onto
China, and lastly in Japan.

on a wild performance.
On Saturday the 18th, the
show is headlined by School-
boy Q, Migos, Lil Uzi, Gucci
Mane, Kodak Black, Play-
boy Carti, and Lil Yachty. On
Sunday the 19th the show
is headlined by Future, Rae
Sremmurd, Post Malone, 21
Savage, Young Thug, XXX-
tentacion, and Lil Pump.
These artist are looking to
bring out the best of SoCal,
and give the audience a show
they deserve. It is open to all
ages and will be played rain
or shine. Tickets have been
sold out for a few weeks and
people are soon to be lining
up to see all their favorite
artists perform on the biggest
stage.

Louisa, and her grandpar-
ents, Benny and Khin. It is
based on their lives and how

four children but Grace has a
different father. Louisa is the
eldest, then Johnny, Grace,
and Molly. Most of the book
is centered on the grandpar-
ents but the prologue and the
end of the book is about Lou-
isa. She won the Miss Bur-
ma pageant when she was 15
even though she is half Jewish
and half Karen, not Burmese.

always heavily detailed. The
book felt more like a nonfic-
tion than a fiction book. It
also switched from being cen-
tered on Louisa in the pro-
logue, to Benny and Khin, and
then back to Louisa. Louisa
was the only child who was
centered on and it would have
been better if parts focused on
her siblings.

could have been shorter, Craig
