California to Become Sanctuary State

On Thursday, October 5th,
Governor Jerry Brown signed
a sanctuary state legisla-
tion limiting who state and
local law enforcement agen-
cies can detain and transfer
to Federal Immigration Au-
thorities. Senate Bill 54 will
go into effect in January, and
has been called unreasonable
by U.S. Attorney General
Jeff Sessions. This is part of
an ongoing debate on how
much states can limit federal
immigration laws from being
enforced. Many supporters
have stated that this legisla-
tion is helping a bigger effort,
because it helps protect ap-
proximately 2.3 million hard
working illegal immigrants
living in California. Governor
Brown stated that this would
not hinder police and sher-
iffs agencies ability to track
dangerous criminals, but will
protect hard working families
illegally in the U.S.
Governor Brown stated,

After thirty years, women in
Saudi Arabia will be allowed
to drive after King Salman
bin Abdulaziz Al Saud signed
a royal decree on September
26th. Once the issues of the
law are sorted out, the order
will be carried out by June
2018.
The decision was mainly
made due to economic and
political reasons. Before, the
women of Saudi Arabia would
have to get a ride from a male
family member or hire a driv-
er to get to work. This led
women to be wary of getting
a job. On average, the month-
ly cost of a driver would be
about a thousand dollars. This
now allows women to earn
money without wasting it on
a driver. Many car companies
has started to advertise their
products to women, such as
Volkswagen Middle East.

What is the best way for students to

learn?

Is teaching yourself the best
way to learn? Personally, I
think going to school is the
best way to learn, as teach-
ers who are experts in their
subjects can pass their knowl-
edge onto students. Kiana
Seva, a freshman at La Jolla
High, says, I think teach-
ers should teach students
because its good to have an
explanation of what youre
doing. To me, teaching your-
self means learning the lesson
on your own rather than by
the teacher, like reading the
textbook before a lecture. If
students were to go to school
each day and then go home
and teach themselves the next
days material, so many hours
would be added on to pre-ex-
isting assignments that there
would be no time for hobbies
or extracurriculars. Currently,
colleges are looking for more
than a good GPA. Studying
is an important skill to have,
and tests and quizzes force
students to rely on them-
selves in order to get a good
grade. Students should be
aware of how they learn best;
for example, whether they are
auditory, visual, or kinesthet-
ic learners.
With that being said, high
school is meant to prepare
young adults for college. At
university, students cannot
rely on their professors to
guide them through the en-
tire course. Most professors
expect students to learn some
things on their own. Teaching
yourself can be helpful as it
makes you persevere through
problems you dont know
how to solve rather than giv-
ing up on them. As you get
older, you gain more respon-
sibility and part of that has to
do with being independent.
Although I believe the bulk
of a class should be taught by
the teacher, having to learn by
yourself becomes important
later in life when you leave
home. Outside of school, there
are many things about inde-
pendent living that no one
has taught us, like how to pay
taxes. Because our parents
have, more or less, been tak-
ing care of us our entire lives,
we dont truly know what
the price of living is. In and
outside of academics, there
are things we have to figure
out on our own because the
training wheels dont stay on
forever. Since it is not always
certain that someone will be
there to help, students should
have the tools they need to
succeed within themselves.
Yet, without teachers we can-
not be truly certain of where
to begin. Schools can improve
the way they teach by going
more in depth with each topic
and taking more time to in-
volve the students with the
material so that what they
learn stays with them.

Liberal Television Shows
Many television shows have a political, most
of left leaning, bias. However, this is not
necessarily harmful to society.

Nowadays, there are many
television shows that lean
left. Dancing with the Stars,
Star Trek: Discovery, and The
Orville do not have a strong
political viewpoint, so gen-
erally both sides of the polit-
ical spectrum watch. Even
though everyone should be
able to watch a show with-
out getting offended, I believe
that a larger quantity of lib-
eral television shows is not
harmful to society and should
not be upsetting.
Liberal television shows are
not that bad because most do
not portray negative messag-
es, there is a large variety, and
the news stations will report
on everything. Liberal shows
tend to have a variety of dif-
ferent shows and since there
are so many, you are bound to
find one that you like.

Las Vegas, its evident that
America desperately needs
to change its gun control
laws. Time and time again,
gun control advocates have
cried out for change, and yet
nothing has happened. Its a
little frustrating that the only
way these gun control laws
get recognition is when over
fifty people have been killed
and over four-hundred are in-
jured.

adays that like to poke fun at
conservatives, but if it is too
offensive, many other shows
exist. Even though many
shows are politically biased
such as Late Night with Jim-
my Kimmel, Saturday Night
Live (SNL), and Ellen, not all
of these are necessarily of-
fensive and, regardless, there
are plenty of other shows
that arent biased. I also be-
lieve that the more offensive
shows are bad for children
to watch. Everyone is born
without having the tendency
to negatively stereotype or be
biased against specific people.
Young people are influenced
by the outside world, shows,
books, etc. so it is import-
ant to pay attention to what
shows kids are watching.

Vegas shooting while driv-
ing me to school on Monday
and I sighed and shook my
head. Im sure that many
people woke up on Monday
to the news and they sighed
and shook their heads. Why?

On Hurricanes and Global
Warming
The effects of global warming have become too strong
to ignore. So what actions can we, as citizens, take?

In the past two months there
have been two catastrophic
hurricanes to hit the United
States. Hurricane Harvey in
Texas, and Hurricane Irma in
Florida. They have both been
devastating storms that have
ended with billions of dollars
in damage. The recovery is
said to take a long time, some
experts even say it could take
years. A ton of people have
donated or have gone to join
in on the rescue relief. During
this horrific time we ask, what
is the cause of these deadly
hurricanes?
With the growing severity
in these storms, there is a con-
nection with the warming of
the planet, that is the reality
of it all. The climate change
is not causing these hurri-
ular occurrence and it seems
as though theres nothing we
can do to about it.
Im not saying that the Sec-
ond Amendment needs to be
revoked. Im just saying that
there have been too many
incidents involving gun vi-
olence, and that violence di-
rectly correlates to the way
that people acquire guns in
our country. However, Amer-
ica isnt currently at war and
the Second Amendment was
intended to form militias
and to protect oneself. The
amendment wasnt intended
for an opportunity to carry
around firearms with no rea-
son whatsoever. Yes, firearms
are a means of protection, but
there is no reason that any-
one needs to own a weapon
used in combat to kill people.
There is no excuse for a per-
son to want a weapon capable
of doing that.

dock kills fifty-eight people
in an act of domestic terror-
ism and, tragically, his actions
make it onto the top of the
list of Americas most devas-
tating shootings. In response,

condolences and sympathies
to the victims and families of
the terrible Las Vegas shoot-
ing. God bless you! While
condolences and sympathies
are a sweet gesture, what
the victims and families re-
ally need is reassurance that
something like this can and
will be stopped in the future.

room, police officers found
forty-seven firearms, twelve
of which were modified with
a bump stock, which makes
semiautomatic weapons act
more like fully automatic
weapons. The bump stock al-
lows firearms to fire off at a
faster rate and is quite easy to
buy, as it is legal under federal
law. Its basically a loophole
into acquiring a machine gun.
In the wake of this mass car-
nage Congress needs to step
up and do something.
Look at Australias govern-
ment, for example. In 1996,
a gunman killed thirty-five
people, and the government
retaliated by forcing strict-
er gun laws despite protest.
Australia hasnt had a mass

time. Hurricane Irma has be-
come the second category 4 to
hit the United States. This was
the first time in 166 years of
weather records. We should
be outspoken about the situa-
tion now instead of forgetting
about it. We cannot be having
billions of dollars going to re-
covery effort every year. Its
time we take action on the
situation at hand. We can stop
global warming by powering
our homes using renewable
energy, using electric cars,
investing in energy efficient
appliances, pull the plug on
your appliances, etc. There
are many things we can do
starting our own home. If the
problem of global warming
continues we may be facing
more tragedies such as these
hurricanes more frequently.

In most states, people who
want to buy a gun must go
through two background
checks. In thirty-nine states,
a background check doesnt
have to be performed at all.
Also, private sellers dont
have to perform background
checks, meaning that con-
victed felons and abusers can
purchase firearms. Nevada
doesnt have a waiting period
and doesnt limit the amount
of guns a person can buy. Ste-
phen Paddock bought thir-
ty-three firearms in the past
year, all legally. His record
was spotless, and yet he will
go down in infamy for his ac-
tions. Our president needs to
do something. Our govern-
ment needs to do something.
Gun control laws need to be
changed in order to protect
the people.

Battle of Business

Boeing, an American avi-
ation company, and Bom-
bardier, a Canadian aviation
company, are currently bat-
tling over a legal dispute,
which has led to the involve-
ment of international leaders.
Boeing claims that Bombar-
dier is using Canadian govern-
ment subsidies to introduce
one of its jets to the Ameri-
can market, thereby threaten-
ing Boeings success. Bombar-
diers C series jet was sold at
absurdly low prices, Boeing
claimed. The American com-
pany argues that this made
Bombardier more competitive
and decreased Boeings sales.

by teams, many of whom are

rosters and entering rebuilds
for the future. From block-
buster trades, to free agent
signings, to the NBA draft,
this offseason went down as a
crazy one. A record seven all
stars from the previous sea-
sons changed teams during
this offseason.
The week surrounding the
NBA draft had many huge
moves of players from team
to team. Dwight Howard
got traded to the Hornets
and DAngelo Russell got
traded to the Nets. On draft
day, the Bulls traded their
all star Jimmy Butler to the
Timberwolves, who will be
looking to reach the playoffs
for the first time since 2004.
Throughout the draft day,
many teams drafted players
looking to make an impact in
their rookie seasons. Markelle
Fultz, Lonzo Ball, and Jayson
Tatum rounded out the first
three picks, all of whom will
be in the conversation for
Rookie of the Year. All-star

As early action and early
decision deadlines near, many
students will be applying to
reputable institutions around
the United States. However,
not all applicants are aware of
some academically challeng-
ing and resource-plentiful
honors programs offered in
public and private universi-
ties around the country. The
following is a list of the top
five honors colleges in the
U.S. as published by College
Confidential. These rankings
are based on a variety of fac-
tors including scholarship
availability, graduation rates,
the honors curriculum, and
study abroad programs:
The University of Michigan
The University of Virginia
The University of Texas Aus-
tin
The University of North Caro-
lina at Chapel Hill
Arizona State University
The University of Michi-
gan is located in Ann Arbor,
Michigan and the honors pro-
gram admits approximately
500 students per year through
the College of Literature, Sci-
ence, and the Arts. Admission
officers and application read-
ers receive about 1900 appli-
cations to the honors college
per year. In 2016, the median
GPA for admitted honors stu-
dents was 3.9 on a 4.0 scale.
The programs median ACT
range was 33-34 and the medi-
an SAT range was 1410-1510.
Students who are admitted to
the University of Michigan
can apply to the honors col-
lege after they complete the
regular application. There is

though not mandated, honors
students are highly encour-
aged to partake in research
and submit a senior thesis. AP
and IB classes can be credited,
however, to major and minor
requirements. The average
ACT score for honors stu-
dents is 34, the average SAT
score is 1530-1540, and most
students are within the top 3
% of their high school gradu-
ating class.
The honors program at the
University of Texas Austin
was established in 1935 and
includes about 700 students.
The university stresses the im-
portance of teacher-student
relationships and encourages
collaboration amongst stu-
dents and professors. There is
a variety of coursework that
honors students must com-
plete ranging from classes on
world literature to math and
philosophy. Juniors enrolled
in the program take two semi-
nars and write papers on their
discussions. Additionally, stu-
dents write an honors thesis
to highlight their work. 70%
of students admitted to the
program are within the top
5% of their high school gradu-
ating class. The average ACT

at La Jolla High School says,

everyday features easier and
quicker to access. I also en-
joy how the new layout, but
something that I do not enjoy
is when you play music you
are not able to see the full al-
bum cover. Some of the new
score ranges from 31-33 and
1480 is the programs average
SAT score.
With a little under 2,000
students, The University of
North Carolina at Chapel
Hills honors program has an
average class size of 18 stu-
dents. Students are pushed
to participate in research
during their time at the uni-
versity, and this research can
begin during freshman year.
Honors housing is offered to
all freshmen, however, soph-
omores are not guaranteed
housing. The honors college
particularly excels in Sociolo-
gy, Business, and Psychology.
A thesis is required for grad-
uation as an honors student.
Admitted students have an
average ACT score of 32 and
an average SAT score of 1465.
Lastly, Arizona State Uni-
versitys Barrett Honors Col-
lege in Tempe, Arizona has
just over 6,200 students and
encourages students to partic-
ipate in research, internships,
and study abroad programs.
In fact, the honors college
offers its own summer study
abroad program that can earn
students credit in up to two
courses. Students are required
to live on campus in honors
housing for every year at Ar-
izona State University. How-
ever, students have access to
sports facilities, lounges, and
computer labs that are of-
fered exclusively to honors
students. A thesis is required
prior to graduation. Average
ACT and SAT scores for ad-
mitted high school students
are 29 and 1350 respectively.
Honors colleges like the
ones listed above provide stu-
dents with a challenging cur-
riculum, while offering them
some of the best perks univer-
sities have to offer.

code, and a pop-up notifica-
tion will offer to open it in
Safari.
4. Take Live Photos of video
calls
Now you can relive that mo-
ment in a proprietary image
format invented by Apple. To
take a Live Photo of someone
during a FaceTime call, youll
need to press the white button
in the bottom left corner of
the screen. Both participants
need to have iOS 11 running
and Live Photos turned on for
it to work.

On October 1st, a double
decker Air France airplane
was forced to make an emer-
gency landing in Canada. The
plane was heading for Los
Angeles when one of the four
engines exploded, though the
cause is still undetermined, it
is predicted that the damage
was caused by a bird colliding
into one of the engines. The
plane was carrying over five
hundred people, but fortu-
nately, none of the passengers
acquired any injuries.
The disaster occurred while
the aircraft was flying over
the Atlantic Ocean, and the
pilot was forced to land the
plane at a military airport.
Passengers recalled hearing a
loud noise and seeing flames
coming from one of the en-
gines, then described that the

8. Silly Messages Tricks
In the last big iOS update,
Apple added a ton of features
to Messages like stickers and
balloons. Its still tinkering
with the format and has add-
ed a line of apps along the
bottom of messages. You can
tap around to see which of
your existing apps have Mes-
sages stickers and integra-
tions. There are also two new
animation effects, spotlight
and echo. Spotlight darkens
everything but puts a bright
light on your latest text. Echo
covers the screen in floating
copies or your message.

the Haunted Birch Aquari-
um has a Sea Monster Mash
showcasing galleries never
before seen on October 20th
and 21st, from 6-9pm. Includ-

children two years old and
under, however, tickets for
ages above are sold for $20 at
the door.
On October 28th, the La
Jolla Recreation Center hosts
a Halloween carnival from
1-4pm, complete with games,
bouncy houses, a costume
contest (age inclusive), and

The Twilight Zone has shown
many deeply moving sto-
ries while still holding onto
the very strange, weird and
overall eerie nature. Not only
is it good on T.V., but also is
performed well on stage, like
our very own schools theatre
department. Produced by Mr.
Allen with the help of La Jolla
Highs student actors and te-
chies, we are bringing three
of these twisted tales and ep-
isodes to life for many to en-

The first episode,Will the
Real Martian Please Stand
Up, takes place at a diner
where a police investigation
becomes more than what
theyd expect, with people
not knowing who to trust.
The second episode, Eye of
the Beholder, takes place in a

villain in this series of films
is Michael Myers, an escaped
mental patient, who many
years before the films start,
murdered his sister.
Happy Death Day: This
film is like Groundhogs Day
but with murder. Tree Geld-
man wakes up on her birth-

figure in a mask and wakes

Catalonia held a referendum
on Sunday, October 1st, to de-
cide whether or not to declare
independence from Spain.
Despite being met with force
by Spanish police, Catalonias
leader, Carles Puigdemont,
claimed that of the number
of registered voters in Cata-
lonia, 42.3 percent cast votes
on Sunday. Of the votes that
were counted, approximately
90% indicated that they want-

liament of Catalonia to sus-
pend the declaration to allow
negotiation and dialogue with
politicians in Madrid.
Puigdemont made it clear

the overwhelming desire
amongst Catalonians to form
an independent state. Puig-
demont stated, With this day
of hope and suffering, the cit-
izens of Catalonia have won
the right to an independent
state in the form of a repub-
lic.
The Spanish government
responded by sending police
from across the country to

7th, a group of white suprem-
acists with torches returned to
Charlottesville, Virginia. Lead
by alt-right leader Richard
Spencer, the group of about
three dozen gathered around
a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee
located in Emancipation Park,
near the University of Virgin-
ia campus.
The statue has been covered
by a black tarp since mid-Sep-
tember and will probably be
removed. The group shout-
ed things like You will not
replace us and We will be

The Charlottesville Police
Department has said that they
are in contact with the Com-
monwealth Attorneys office
in Charlottesville to see if any
action can be taken against
the rally.
In August, another more
deadly rally was held. Nine-
teen were hospitalized, and
32-year-old Heather Heyer
was killed when a car slammed
into a group of counter-pro-
testers. Members of the alt-
right and Ku Klux Klan put
together a Unite the Right
rally and clashed heavily with
counter-protesters. The con-
flict sparked serious contro-
versy when President Trump
said that both Neo-Nazis and
counter-protestors were to
blame, a statement that Spen-
cer praised Trump for.
Again in September the alt-
right protesters flocked to the
statue, but the demonstration
was quickly shut down after
several hundred counter-pro-
testers surrounded the group.

The massive number of evacu-
ees caused the roads and free-
ways of Northern California
and Los Angeles extremely
congested. After being in the
path of the fire, Highway 101
was closed. There is a push for
more people to be evacuated
in Orange County, due to the
fire in Anaheim.
It is not clear whether or not
the fires were started by hu-
mans. Cal Fire is focused on
stopping the fires and res-
cuing the people who are in
danger. No matter the cause,
the fires are spreading rapid-
ly due to the dry Santa Ana
winds, reaching up to 40mph.
To keep the people safe and to
prevent looters, authorities in
Santa Rosa have established a
sunrise to sunset curfew. As of
October 12th, there are a total
of 24 death reports and over
650 people reported missing.
About a hundred people are
being treated in Napa and
Sonoma hospitals for burns
and smoke inhalation.
The fires have been described
as apocalyptic and war-like.

la High School students have the
opportunity to enter the Twilight
Zone. The LJHS drama department
will be doing three different epi-
sodes from the classic television se-
ries.
Will The Real Martian Stand Up:
A UFO has fallen and two cops have
to figure out who or what got out.
Eye of the Beholder: Janet is a
woman who has many plastic sur-
geries in an attempt to fix her facial
disfigurement. We see her in her
hospital bed after her last treatment.
Living Doll: Talking Tina, the doll
that does everything she talks she
moves and she was just purchased
by the Straiter family. What does
Tina have to say about the conflict
bubbling under the surface of this
family?

cial?
Z: Because its kind of like a cult
classic and people of all and theres

like I have no idea what Living Doll
or Martian look like at all the only
exception to that is people under-
studying in the other episodes so
thats very interesting. Also just

Mean Girls is finally taking
the stage making its debut in
live theater after its premiere
in movie theaters in 2004. From
wearing pink on Wednesdays to
the October 3rd phenomenon,
references to this film are still
prominent today. Most of us are
familiar with the story of Cady
Heron who moves to Illinois after
living in Africa with her parents
who are zoologists. She is forced
to navigate the social hierarchy
of her high school and faces the
vicious top of the hierarchy, The
Plastics.
Taking the stage at the August
Wilson Theater in Manhattan,
this new Broadway show is ex-
pected to be incredibly popular.
Written by Tina Fey, a world
renowned comedian, there is a
great expectation to this show.

ed to open in April of 2018 and

Swan Lake
The Classic Ballet Takes The Stage Once Again

Originally choreographed in
1887, Swan Lake is a ballet that
has entranced audiences for cen-
turies. This classic ballet is unde-
niably beautiful and a must see if
you are a proponent of the arts
or are just looking for something
to do. The San Diego Civic The-
ater is housing the California
Ballet Company on October 28th
and 29th for their production of
Swan Lake. The California Ballet
Company is the longest standing
ballet company in San Diego and
has earned merit in the coun-
ty by producing countless out-
standing shows. As the opening
show of their 50th season, it is
almost guaranteed to be a grand
production.

has produced shows for the past
four years that featured La Jolla
High School graduate, Zoe Men-
del, and myself. I have seen the
hard work that goes into these
productions first hand and I can
honestly say that this show, un-
like many, caters to any audi-

Cyrus Celebration of Her New Album

To celebrate the release of her
new album, Younger Now, Mi-
ley Cyrus visited Jimmy Fallon
on The Tonight Show for an en-
tire week. Spanning from Octo-
ber 2nd through the 6th, it was
fittingly dubbed Miley Cyrus
Week by NBC.
Kicking off her Tonight Show
takeover, Cyrus opened the
show alongside Adam Sandler
on October 2nd, singing No
Freedom by Dido, to honor the
victims and families affected by
the Las Vegas shooting. She was
also interviewed by Fallon on her
inspiration for her new album,
which was motivated when she
learned to accept who she was in
the past. Once again to memori-
alize lives lost to the massacre,
she closed the show singing her
hit song, The Climb.
The following day, Cyrus played
a new family-feud kind of game
called Search Party on a team
with her two sisters, Noah and
Brandi, and her mom, Tish.
Their opponents were the cast of
Riverdale, while Fallon hosted
the game. Afterwards, she per-
formed one of her new songs, A

Screamzone vs.
Haunted Trails

Both located in San Diego, Cal-
ifornia, Screamzone and Haunt-
ed Trails are both great haunted
experiences. Located along the
Del Mar race track, Screamzone
has three attractions: The Haunt-
ed Hayride, The Chamber, and
the House of Horrors. If those
arent scary enough, you can
also take part in The Running
Dead, an obstacle course where
participants run for their lives
from blood-sucking, brain-eat-
ing zombies, and race against
the clock as you climb, run, and
jump around a number of obsta-
cles. Open from 7:00 pm-11:00
pm on Sundays through Thurs-
days, and 7:00pm - midnight on
Fridays and Saturdays. You can
enjoy all three attractions for

At the center of late night com-
edy, Miley Cyrus delivered a
week filled with not only laughs,

turbulent events of late, people
watching at home were remind-
ed of the fabric of American
society. Most importantly, that
human empathy exists within
many; threading an invisible

plenty of options. Haunted Hay-
ride is one of my favorites. They
even have a place where you can
take pictures with your friends.
While Haunted Trails does not
have as many options, it is still
a fun, haunted experience. Lo-
cated at Balboa Park, this scary
park comes once a year to San
Diego. There is a one mile-long
terror filled trail, but before be-
ing sent into the trail you must
find your way through the Ex-
periment Maze. The trail has
different sections with different
themes, this years including
the new It movie, the Stranger
Things House, Annabelle and the
Nun, and more. Haunted Trails
is open from September 19th -
October 31st, from 7pm - 11pm.
$25 for general admission, which
includes the maze, and you can
purchase your tickets online or
when you arrive at the park.

Lights! Camera! Film Festival!
Hollywoods biggest names grace San Diegos silver screens during
the seventeenth annual San Diego International Film Festival

When Mr. Boyd approached
me and asked if I would be in-
terested in receiving a press
pass to the San Diego Film
Festival, I was immediately
interested, though I didnt
truly know what the event
was. Nevertheless, it sound-
ed exciting, so I submitted an
online application in order to
obtain this press pass, and I
hoped for the best! See, a ben-
efit of taking journalism at
La Jolla High is that you may
have access to many exclusive
events in order to help create
content for the Hi-Tide. Luck-
ily, this event became one of
them as receiving the pass
was, ultimately, a success.
So you might be wondering:
What is the San Diego Film
Festival? Well, until recently,
I didnt know the answer to
that question either. But now
that I do, let me share my ex-
perience with you.
In order to view the event, I
was given what was called a
Fest Pass. At first I assumed
it was a special pass given
only to those who were linked
to media outlets. However, I
later discovered that the ma-
jority of people attending the
event actually had the same
pass. This pass allows pass
holders to book up to 17 mov-
ies and events linked to the
San Diego Film Festival over
the course of its five day span.
Upon learning this, I booked
an event or movie every day
of the festival (beginning on
October 4th and ending on
the 8th). I didnt know what
exactly I was booking but,
regardless, I booked these
events anyway. I also learned
that, for those who didnt
have a fest pass, tickets could
be purchased online for indi-
vidual events. So if anyone is
interested in seeing some of
the San Diego Film Festival
Events next year and cant
afford a pass (let me tell you,
that pass is not cheap) you
can always purchase individ-
ual tickets online!
My first event was called the
Opening Night Film and Af-
ter Party. It took place on Oc-
tober 4th at Balboa Theatre in
Downtown San Diego. I had
to wait in line for a long time
but finally pass and ticket
holders were let into the the-
atre and we were shown the
movie Marshall. This was an
incredible film about a court
case in which Thurgood Mar-
shall (yes, the one who later
became Supreme Court Jus-
tice), an attorney at the time,
worked with Sam Friedman
in order to save the life of an
innocent man falsely accused
of rape. This movie will be in
theatres starting October 12th
so I would highly recommend
checking it out! After the
movie, a short interview was
held with one of Marshalls
producers, Jonathan Sanger.
After the interview, I attend-
ed the after party. There was
food being served and drinks
available. Photographers
were managing special pho-
to stations and jewelry was
being auctioned off. I felt a
bit out of place but, as a jour-
nalist must, I did my best to
blend in with the crowd. I had
hoped I could interview some
producers but this was not
the right event for that.
On both October 5th and
6th I had booked tickets to
go see some short films. The
first set, called A Stranger in
a Stranger Land, was at Regal
Cinemas in Horton Plaza and
the second set, called When
Words Collide, was play-
ing at Arclight. I wont lie,
some of the shorts were a bit
strange but they were all well

put together with profession-
al lighting and filming and a
couple were truly fantastic!
While some were humorous
and light-hearted (like one
about the internal dialogue
one may have when seeing
someone attractive) others
were serious and brought im-
portant issues to light (like
one short which expressed
the irony of living in a society
in which we may, if necessary,
euthanize our pets but not our
loved ones). At the end of the
shorts, some of the produc-
ers, directors, and actors were
brought to the front of the
theatre and an interview was
held. They discussed the hard-
ships of getting into the film
industry and the ideas behind
their short films. After the
interviews, the audience was
able to meet the filmmakers

and actors and ask questions.
I spoke with the producer of a
short called WYRM (which
humorously depicted the life
of a late-bloomer) and I asked
him about elements of the
short I didnt completely un-
derstand.
October 7th was especially
exciting. I went to what was
called the Filmmaker Awards
Show and Party which took
place at the Pendry Hotel at
9:00 PM. Essentially, this was
an event established to recog-
nize award-winning films that
the San Diego Film Festival
had been playing. However,
the most esteemed part of the
event was the party held be-
fore the awards show. I was in
a room with filmmakers from
all around the world! The first
filmmaker I spoke with actu-
ally approached me. He asked
me why I was attending the
event and I explained I was
there for my journalism class.
I learned his name was Josh-
ua Lang and we discussed my
role as a journalist and what
kinds of questions I should
be asking filmmakers. Film-
makers love talking about
themselves, he advised. Just
as the Awards Show was be-
ginning and our conversation
was coming to a close, he of-
fered to let me interview him
over the phone at some point!
I soon discovered the he was
the producer for the mov-
ie Apache Warriors, which
won an award during the
Awards Show! A couple days
later, when I interviewed him,
I asked him what the best and
worst parts of his job are. He
replied:
The best of my job is being
able to cooperate with amaz-
ing people in really cool loca-
tions and doing the fun work
of actually making a movie
and being able to share it with
people. The rough part about
the job would be the times in
between when you dont have
work or when youre looking
for work and youre trying to
get things together, Lang said
It can seem like the entire
worlds working against you
Its not necessarily anything
thats incredibly important or
vital for life as we know it but
its not necessarily an easy
task or job. So its like Ive got
a really great story but try-
ing to get people to jump on
board or give money can be
very frustrating at times.
Finally, the Awards Show
began. Once the doors to the
ballroom were opened people
began filling in. I sat near a
young man, whose name I lat-
er learned was Brian McAu-
ley. Coincidentally, he had
written the movie I had been
scheduled to see the next day!
As we engaged in conversa-
tion, I asked him to explain
what its like being a script-
writer.
He said it takes him a couple
weeks to write a full mov-
ie script. The hardest thing
about his job, he also ex-
plained, is the fact that not
everything gets made. He had
been writing a script he had
been very proud of and it was
never made.
The highlight of the show
was when Dismissed was
given the Best World Pre-
miere Award. McAuley and
I looked at each other in sur-
prise and I congratulated him

drew to a close, McAuley
agreed to letting me interview
him. During that interview, I
also asked about the best and
worst things about his job. He
replied:
Its a really amazing thing
to start with a blank page
and just suddenly populate a
world with these characters.
For me its like now I want
to make them living breath-
ing beings that every morn-
ing Im excited to go interact
with and learn more about
them and let them fall in love
with each other and let them
murder each other. But its
really just fun to play with a
big sandbox. And sometimes
that is also the worst part of
the job. It can be hard when
youre not feeling inspired;
or when youre working on
something and you realize
theres not as much there as
you thought there was; or the
spark is not an everlasting
one.
The next day, October 8th,
I went to go see Dismissed.
This movie tells the story of an
ambitious student, willing to
do anything for good grades,
and his english teacher. It
also starred Kent Osborne
and Dylan Sprouse (now you
know why I chose to see this
particular movie...). It was
incredibly well done, incor-
porating elements of both
humor and horror, and will
be playing soon in theatres. I
dont want to spoil the story
so I will, instead, encourage
everyone to go see it! At the
end of the screening, some of
the filmmakers, including the
writer, who I had met the day
before, and some of the actors
(including Kent Osborne, Rae
Gray, and Leslie Thurston,
sadly no Dylan Sprouse) came
forward for a short interview.
Kent Osborne, who played the
English teacher, humorously
discussed the challenges of
pretending to be married. The
interview drew to a close and
so my time at the San Diego
Film Festival was over.
So heres what Ive learned:
the San Diego Film Festival
is a way for people to watch
new independent films and
even meet their producers, di-
rectors, actors, and scriptwrit-
ers. It is a great opportunity
to make new and important
connections, especially for
people interested in the film
industry. I had a great time
at the Festival and am very
grateful to have been given
the chance to go to exclusive
events, see amazing movies,
and meet very accomplished
people.

A Deadly Day at the Del
How one womans short, but infamous stay at the Del, influ-
enced decades worth of history

Since its opening in 1888, the
Hotel del Coronado has amazed
guests, visitors, and tourists alike
with its magnificent Victorian
architecture, significant histor-
ical importance, and panoram-
ic Pacific Ocean views. The Del
has housed eleven presidents,
foreign royalty, celebrities, such
as the cast of the 1950s classic
film, Some Like It Hot. To some,
however, the most notable of
them is Kate Morgan, a woman
who checked into the hotel one
day, and never checked out. For
125 years, her supposed ghost
has been haunting the Del and
its visitors; we, editors of the Hi-
Tide went to the renowned hotel
to learn about Morgans history,
her stay at the hotel, and to see if
her spirit lives on today.
When Morgan first entered the
Del, her viewpoint was similar to
ours. The lobbys dark wood in-
teriors, and grand old fashioned
chandelier are the first of many
opulent features seen when en-
tering. In the lobby alone, a vast
history is associated with its
many of its characteristics. At
the top of the lobby is a balcony
where the female guests would
sit and watch the new guests ar-
riving to the hotel. Additionally,
the Del still features two of its
original elevators, with their in-
tricate gold-painted metal frame;
nevertheless, the hotel still man-
dates that the elevators are con-
trolled by an elevator operator,
which gives it an old fashioned
feel. From admiring the lobby,
one feels a part of the Dels ele-
gant past. In the years since 1888,
the hotel has seen many renova-
tions. However, the hotels origi-
nal white Victorian style exterior,
red roofs, stunning ballroom and
dining room, and elegant lobby
have remained in their original
form, and are in pristine condi-
tion.
Kate Morgan checked into the
hotel in November 1892 under
the name Lottie Bernard, a fa-
mous actress at the time. Mor-
gans visit was marked by strange
encounters with hotel staff, and
recurring complaints throughout
her visit. Morgan often contacted
hotel staff to complain about her
illness, claiming she had stomach
cancer, and that she was waiting
for her brother to come and visit
her. However, as the days passed,
Morgan had no visitors to the

hotel, and went into downtown
San Diego to purchase a gun. The
next morning, Morgan was found
dead with a gunshot through her
head on the hotels steps leading
to Coronado Beach. A week later
it was determined that the gun-
shot was self-inflicted, and it was
assumed that Morgan ended her
life due to a mysterious and un-
clear factor in her life.
At the time, the Del was un-
aware of Morgans identity, soon
learning that the name under her
check-in was merely an alias.
Immediately, the hotel published
printed advertisements across
the United States and in all ma-
jor cities asking individuals to
identify the Beautiful Stranger.
The advisement received nu-
merous responses from families
across the country who believed
that Morgan was their long-lost
daughter, sister, or mother. How-
ever, these accusations proved
to be false. Eventually, Morgans
employers, a wealthy Los Ange-
les family, claimed the Beautiful
Strangers identity as Kate Mor-
gan.
Soon thereafter, an uniden-
tified man in Iowa paid for her
burial services, despite not want-
ing to have her body transferred
to Iowa.
By learning more about Mor-
gan over the years, historians
and ghost hunters have conclud-
ed much to be false from Mor-
gans stay at the Del. At the time,
the Del kept a record of a guests
complaints and interactions, in-
cluding Morgans. Morgans re-
corded conversations included
that she was ill with stomach
cancer and that she was waiting
for her brother. However, an au-
topsy revealed that she wasnt
ill, and her employers and his-
torical records showed that she
didnt have any brothers. These
revelations were only the be-
ginning of Morgans mysterious
past. Morgan was from Iowa, a
year before her encounters at the
Del she married a man,whom she
soon thereafter lost a child with.

The next day, she ran off to Los
Angeles with her brother-in-
law, Albert. Upon her arrival in
California, she had $1,000 cash,
which at the time, was a lot of
money, and that a woman of her
nature acquiring those sums, was
mysterious. By the time she ar-
rived at the Del, her money was
wiped out.
Even though Morgans stay at
the Del is a mystery to this day,
many believe she currently oc-
cupies the most famous room at
the Del, 3327, the room where
Morgan stayed as a guest. Since
Morgans stay, the rooms have
been reconfigured, however,
room 3327 is the most accu-
rate location of where Morgans
room might have been. We were
fortunate to receive a tour of the
room. To our surprise, the room
is brightly lit, features a king
bed, and a nice sized bathroom.
It was quite unassuming. Be-
sides its significance, room 3327
is virtually identical to all other
guestrooms. While we didnt
experience anything out of the
ordinary, the hotel has received
numerous complaints over the
years regarding suspect activity.
Most recently, a male guest woke
in the middle of the night to find
the initials L.B. being written on
the ceiling, and then immediately
vanishing. Other instances have
included a suitcase being flung
open, items falling off of shelves,
and being touched on the shoul-
der while in the shower.
Our tour guide for the day, and
the Dels Director of Market-
ing and Communications, Gina
Petrone, said, There are no scary
places, only scary people.
Despite these accusations and
reaffirming Petrones statement,
the hotel does not confirm ac-
cusations that their hotel is
haunted. While they do take into
account guests stories, they ha-
vent confirmed Morgans ghost-
ly presence. For instance, when
staying at the hotel, one can ran-
domly be put in this room with-
out knowing that it is the haunt-
ed room.
In addition to the haunted
room, one of the Dels stores, Est.
1888, is also apparently haunted
by Morgan. The stores manager,
Cecilia, just celebrated a decade
working there, and has experi-
enced much in her time there. In
an interview with the Hi-Tide,
she told us how she has wit-
nessed levitating objects, items
falling off the shelf, and items
disappearing and reappearing
elsewhere in a matter of minutes.
She mentioned that her belief in
spirits and ghosts existed before
she started working at the Del,
but that her experiences while
working at the hotel have o80ly
made her belief in it stronger.
Although our experience
wasnt out of the ordinary, by
learning of Kate Morgans past
and short stay at the Del, we
were able to conclude why the
infamous Hotel Del will always
be one of the many gems of San
Diego.
