Practice 2

Procedure

1. The Sketcher icon was selected to start the Sketcher workbench.

2. xy plan was selected to define the sketch plane.
3. First, a circle was sketched from the origin by clicking the circle icon with the
diameter 150mm.
4. By selecting the circle icon the second circle was sketched with the diameter 200mm.
5. The same circle icon was used to sketch the biggest circle with the diameter 250mm.
6. The 4 of ellipse shape was sketched.
7. In order to do the sketch, 60mm length was measure to sketch the ellipse shape.
8. Firstly determine the centre from the origin to the positive y-axis with height of
100mm.
9. At the height of 100mm from positive y-axis the 30mm was measured from positive
x-axis and followed by negative x-axis.
10. Then, the centre had been determine at the length which is had two centre from 30mm
at the positive x-axis and another point at the negative x-axis.
11. At the centre, the arc tangent was sketched by selecting the Arc icon to sketch that
part.
12. There are 2 arc tangent was sketched with the radius of 10mm at the positive and
negative x-axis with the length of 60mm.
13. The arc tangent was joint by sketching the line using the trim function.
14. Steps 8-13 was repeated to sketch another 3 ellipse shape with the different axis from
the origin.
15. The 4 semi-circle was sketch.
16. The 45 angle was taken from the origin of the x-axis and the line was sketch until it
intercept with 150mm and 200mm diameter of the circle.
17. At the interception of diameter 150mm of the circle, it is a centre of the semi-circle.
18. In order to sketch the semi-circle, at the centre a circle was sketch.
19. The circle was sketch until it touch the interception at the diameter 200mm of the
circle.
20. The semi-circle is inside the circle with diameter 150mm. At the outside of the circle
we deleted that using the quick trim function to delete the half of the circle.
21. Steps 16-20 was repeated to sketch another 3 part of semi-circle with the different
axis.
Problems statement

From the sketch, there are several problem when using the Catia to sketch the Practice 2
which causes some difficulties and the sketches could be done properly. Firstly, to sketch the
ellipse shape part. In order to sketch that we need to measure the height and length. Its need
an accurate measurement, so that the ellipse shape part can be sketch accurately. Then, the
problem to sketch another 3 part of ellipse shape sketches. We, need to measure the height
and length at the different axis. We need to sketch part by part which is take a long time to
sketch the part. Another problem is to sketch the semi-circle. We need to set the angle to
determine the centre which the problem is to set the angle. Besides to determine the radius of
the circle we need to do a calculation and need more understanding. Next, to connect a line
between to arc tangent to sketch the ellipse shape. Lastly, problem when sketch a semi-circle
which we need to sketch 4 semi-circle. We need to calculate the angle at the different axis
which is complicated and sometimes it can be the measurement inaccurate.

Problems solving

Based on the problem that we faced, there had come the solution to overcome the problem in
order to sketch an accurate sketching. Firstly, regarding to the problem in practice 2 which
problem in measurement accuracy. To solve the problem we use constraints function by
selecting the constraint icon. We selected the line that we want to measure, then select the
constraint icon. The measurement of that part will appear. Another way is we double click to
the line and the part definition will appear. We just enter the value and it will be
automatically correct the measurement with accurate value. Next, to sketch the ellipse part
we use the mirror function in order to save our time rather than we sketch part by part which
more difficult and take a long time to sketch that part.

Same problem also to sketch the semi-circle, we solve the problem using the mirror
function. We just select the first semi-circle then select the mirror icon. Then just drag that
part. For the problem in determine the radius of the semi-circle there are several ways to
solve the problem rather we use calculation or based on sketching. In that part we determine
the radius of semi-circle using sketches. We take 45 angle from the origin of the x-axis and
sketch the line until it intercept with 150mm and 200mm diameter of the circle. At the
interception of diameter 150mm of the circle, it is a centre of the semi-circle. In order to
sketch the semi-circle, we sketch a circle at the centre. The circle is sketch until it touch the
interception at the diameter 200mm of the circle. The semi-circle is inside the circle with
diameter 150mm. At the outside of the circle we deleted that using the quick trim function to
delete the half of the circle. For the ellipse part there are two arc tangent. To connect the arc
tangent we use the trim function to draw a line to connect the arc tangent. Lastly to determine
the 45 angle we sketches a line from the origin then double click to the line. The line
definition will appear and enter the value of angle. The angle of line will automatically
corrected accurately.

Conclusion

From the practice 2 we had gain a better understanding to sketch the part especially for
ellipse shape part. Besides we had learn to use mirror function which more easier to sketch
that part which is more than one part with the same measurement. Then, a lot of improvement
of skill that we achieved from this practice 2 compare to the last practice.
