I’ve often thought that some of the happiest moments in life occur in the kitchen. Picking
at the turkey before thanksgiving meal, late night ice cream raids, entertaining guests
with a glass of wine with a date, informal family meetings, or conversations over a cup of
coffee. The kitchen is truly the heart of the home. With use comes wearing out. Most
peoples kitchens are catch all of office, restaurant, etc, more than they resemble the
gleaming pictures in kitchen magazines. . Spring brings….
If you have the budget, nothing beats a kitchen designed for your particular lifestyle.
If you’re on a tight budget, theres things you can do to spice up this important room.
Remove clutter – if you haven’t used the pasta maker since you opened the box, it might
be time to ship it to the basement, making more room for useful items. A coat of paint,
better lighting, new seat cushions and curtains, all add to

THE CLEANUP CENTER around the sink should have at least 18" to 30" on one
side, and 48" to 54" on the other, to allow enough room to stack dishes, pans and
utensils. Always plan for at least 12" between the sink and the nearest corner, measured
from the front of the counter.
THE COOKING CENTER around the range requires 12" minimum on one side of
the range, and 15" to 24" on the other side, again with 12" minimum to the nearest corner.
Microwaves and built-in ovens should have at least 15" to 18" counter space on the right
side (assuming the door is hinged on the left side).
THE STORAGE CENTER around the refrigerator needs 15" to 18" on the handle
side of the refrigerator, to set food.

Your budget –
Regardless of what you do budget, don't skimp on design, appliances, or labor. These are
the basis for a functional kitchen and you should get the
best you can affort. Instead, to cut costs, use stock cabinets instead of custom
work, laminates instead of corian, and keep your current
appliances, if you can. Try to keep existing plumbing and electrical. Don't make
structural changes to the room, and make the most of small
improvements like new paint, new wallpaper, new curtains and decorations.
Energy efficiency
Natural lighting, high energy value appliances.
