Fiber Optic Cable Color Guide

Identify Types of Fiber by Color


A fiber cables jacket color is typically defined by the fiber type, and will almost always follow the
color definitions below. Both multimode and single-mode cables designed for outdoor use will
typically have a black jacket to protect the cable from damage due to solar exposure and UV light.

Cable Type Color


Multimode 50 m and 62.5 m (OM1, OM2) Orange
Multimode 50 m, laser optimized (OM3) Aqua
Single-mode (OS1/OS2) Yellow
Outside Plant (OSP) - MDPE Black
Indoor/Outdoor (I/O) Black
