2. Describe your personal contributions in this project

In 3rd Year 2nd Semester bachelor degree program, we are required to take Community
Services HDB 1012 as a part of Mata Pelajaran Umum (MPU). We had successfully
organized an event called WE HERTZ YOU [WHY] on 3rd and 4th June 2017. A group of 21
students with four supervisors which are our main supervisor Dr Muhammad Ridhuan Tony
Lim Bin Abdullah alongside with Dr Subarna A/P Sivapalan, Mr Abdul Mutalib Bin Embong
and Mr Amzairi Bin Amar as our respectful supervisors. We are divided into five groups
which are the High Committee, Sponsorship and Public Relation, Promotion and Publication
and Ceremony and Protocol, Souviners Food & Beverages and Logistic and last but not least
Activities & Games and Human Resource Management. The course is designed to ensure that
students will acquire some of those basic elements to be applied in CEP as to support
students development. The social and value emphasis on this community based project is in
line with UTP mission to produce well-rounded graduates with a broad-minded, balanced and
holistic views.
We Hertz You (WHY) is one of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs
that are organized by a group of 21 engineering students from Electrical & Electronic
Engineering Department, Civil & Environmental Engineering Department and Mechanical
Engineering Department of Institute of Technology PETRONAS (UTP). This event involves
students and teachers which are refugees from Afghanistan and Somalia at Afghan Learning
Centre (ALC) located in Selangor. Main objectives of this event are to provide humanitarian
aids for the refugees at Afghan Learning Centre to reduce their suffering and to help them
improving their lives by providing financial aids and some other useful items such as
stationery and bookshelves for educational purposes of the students there.

The position I held in this WHY event is Head Of Department (HOD) for Ceremony &
Protocol (CNP) department. As the HOD for Ceremony & Protocol (CNP), I am responsible
for the flow of event from before, during and after event. I make sure that the schedules is
arranged and always updated if any changes in plan during this project. I had always
monitoring the flow of the whole event according to the schedule and setting up the hall for
the opening and closing ceremony during the time of event which on 3rd and 4th June 2017. I
also make sure the committees follow the tentative so that the times not be delay or extended.

3. Describe your thinking and reasoning as you worked on the project. Include
components that left you unsatisfied. What did you learn from working on this
project? Will your work help you in the future?

As I worked on this event as the HOD for CNP, there are a lot of things that I learnt while
doing this event. At the early stage, we did not have that many people with experience. We
are lacking of people. But we still managed to get through this problem with taking the
challenge and do it from scratch. From this problem, I learn that it is okay if we does or do
not have experience, because we can always learn something new with anyone who had more
knowledge and experience than us. We also can always share our knowledge to everyone
because great satisfaction comes from sharing with others. Besides that there was also some
problem during the main event, as we carry out the activities there where some changes of the
time of the activities because some of the activities had take so many time from the time that
we estimated. We need to cut time and luckily the students and teachers there give us a good
cooperation. Not all student know English so it was hard for us to communicate with them.
But, despite the language barrier, they still want to talk with us by using body language so it
was fun and we can understand them well too.
In a nutshell, this HDB 1012 community service course offers me a lot of new things. I
can learn and improve many things such as social skills, professionalism, managerial skills
during this whole project. We also learned to give and share to those who is needy and be a
part of the community. This is a great experience and also can be useful for the future. I hope
there is more event like this in the future as it is good for our learning process.

4. Was this project similar to any other activities that you have participated before
in UTP? How?

Before joining this project, I have been participate in many kind of event in the UTP. For
me this project is slightly different from my previous event because We Hertz You Project is
a voluntary project that help us give support to refugees living in Malaysia, be it in terms of
moral support and other forms of public donations. This have be an advantages for me
because I had been experience in handling event that involving people and kids before.
Previously, I had been participated in event involving orphan kids of orphanage house in
Perak at the UTP. The different between this two event is that we can learn variations of
character and personality of kids inside and outside Malaysia. From these events, I learnt that
they are lacking many facilities such as school, their own home and of course opportunity to
become success. They have desires to be like other lucky people. Refugees kids always
dreaming to have wonderful childhood at their own cozy home sweet home in their
homeland. It same goes to the orphan kids in Malaysia, they longed for love and the
opportunity to be like others. What I learnt from them is that we have to be greatful with what
we have and always be humble towards because we still do not know what future hold for us.

5. Discuss about your team. What went well? What didnt go well? Why?

As for my team, our group are consist of two department which are Ceremony & Protocol
(CNP) department and Publication & Promotion (PNP) department. But some of our group
members does not have any experience in conducting these CNP or PNP tasks before. So
throughout this project we have been helping each other with our task and work together.
Since I had also been handling some of CNP and PNP works in previous event that I had
joined, I had shared my experience and guided them with the task that they dont understand
because the more we share the more we have. We manage to keep our tasks and project going
well although there some problems during accomplices this project such as the changes in
plans and limited of time since we are all busy with others academic works and tasks.
Although with those busy time, we manage to do some meeting together and completed our
tasks given. There are also no miscommunications as everything we share through our
WhatsApp group.

6. How this project improve yourself in terms of the following :

Social skills
As a CNP, I had to work along with many people in different department. Throughout
this project, I improved my social skills by communicated and interact with many
students from other courses and people that I havent met before. I always put the
professionalism first during working so that they will not be any problem along this
project.
communication skills
I managed to improve my communication skills with the refugees not only
with the teacher but to the children too. The way to interact with children is
more difficult than to the adult. Most of the ALCs student cant talk malay
and some of them cannot speak English as well, so I make sure to explain to
them until they understand.
critical & problem solving skills
As the HOD of CNP, I need to have this kind of attitude as many problem may
occur during the time of event. Every decision that make will effected the
event flow, so must know how to think and act fast in every kind of situations.
Every problems there have to be a solution and before deciding it, I discuss
with my assistant so that we will make the better decision as Two heads are
better than one.
leadership skills
From this event, I had been trusted to be a HOD for CNP department. So I had
to lead people especially during opening and closing ceremony as that matters
are put directly under our department. So I can polish my leadership skill by
leading my committees during the event.
