Care shall be taken to ensure tha: deformations of
matzh-cast segments due to thermal gndients caused by
the heat of hycratior of the new eas: concrete co not
exceed, @: the time of inal set of tae new corerete,
0.03125 in. (0.8 mm) for a single segment or 075 in
20mm) cumulative for an entie sfan, These
deformations stall be prevented by’ properly protecting
‘both the mateiecast and new cast segments in an
isothermal enclosure or wih curing blinkets and plastic
sheeting.
8.16.72 Rabriestion
Reinforeing steel shall be fabricated and placed
scootding to the cortract documents. Any confit o
Ine-ference with the proper loestion of dicts end/or
reinforcing, or blockcuts sll be promptly resolved and
conections maie as direoed 2y te Engineer. No
reinforcing steel shal be eat and removed to permit
proper alignment of stressing conduis. Aay bar that
‘eanot be fabrieatod to clear the pos-tens.oning duct,
shall be replaced by additonal bars vith alequa lap
lengths and stall be submitted to he Engineer for
approval
Al segments shall be marked on the inside with a
unicue identification at the time of fomn removal. This
identification sball be used to identity each segment on
shop plans, posttensining details andealculatios, and
any other document perisining to the fabrication and
erection of precast concrete segments
Positive meaus holding the conduit in is eomect
postion shall be provided in all cares ard shall be
Indbated on the working drewinge submited. for
approval. The conduit shall be suppor at intervals as
specified in Article 104.1, “Placement of Dacts,” of as
shown in the contract documents, and shall be securely
fastened 10 prevent movement durirg. placemest of
concrete
8.16.73 Separation of Match-Cast Segments
The Contrastor shall provide equipment to be used
{for uniform separation of matcheast egmexts without
damage. The method, as well as details ofthe equipment
to be used for ssparating match-cast segmems, shall be
included in the shop plans. A bond lreakiag material
shal! be used on the web aad flanges of the previously
cast segment to facilitate separation ef segments. The
boné breaking material shall be used t» break the bond
of concrete between the face of previously east segments
fand a newly est segment, as Well as the end headers,
wher required. The tond breaker shall consist of flax
soap and talc, or other material ayproved by the
Engineer. A demonstration shall be performed on a
2.0% 4.0-8 (60) x 1200-mm) specimen, prior to the
casting of segments, to prove the «dequacy of the
‘material. The material shell noc be injurious to the
Concrete and shell permit removal of a segment without
pallouts caused by adtesion of the concrete.
Problems have been reported in te past when
segments do not match property at joints 2ecause of the
thermal deformations incuced during maté-casting, The
design gradient in the AASHTO LRFD 3ridige Design
Specifications can assist Designers and Constrctors in
determining to what extent ths type of deformation vill
occur and if additional protection of te match-cast
segmertis necessary.
