2. Trivia questions sun. The parts of the sun will be labeled.
3. The fun fact sheet 2. The students will be asked trivia questions
. at the end of the lesson. They will write their
answers on a whiteboard and will hold them
up so the teacher can see their answers.
3. Students will be given a fun fact sheet.
When the teacher is reading the book the
students must write, or draw two fun facts on
the fun fact sheet. This will be handed in

The students will show that they know the suns purpose by answering the trivia
questions.
The students will show that they were listening to the book and picked up at least two
fun facts about the sun throughout the book.

The parts of the sun and why we need it.
Prerequisites:
What the sun is.
Key Vocabulary:
Sun: the star around which the earth orbits
Corona: the outermost part of the atmosphere of a star
Core: the center of the sun
Convection Zone: where light is created
Radiative Zone: is the section of the solar interior between the innermost core and the
outer convective zone.
Sun spots: the dark spots on the sun
Photosphere: the surface of the sun
Content/Facts:
The sun is a star.
The sun has layers.
The sun does many things for the Earth.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
Read the book Our friend the Sun by: Janet Palazzo to the students.

Development/Teaching Approaches
Reading the book:
First, the teacher will hand out the Fun Fact worksheet.
The teacher will then tell the students to write down at least two fun facts that they
learn about the sun while she reads the book.
To introduce the sun, the teacher will be reading the book Our friend the Sun by: Janet
Palazz. As the teacher reads the book, the students will be pulling out at least two fun
facts that they learned from the book and writing it on their sheet.
As the teacher is reading, the teacher will pause for a few moments in the book to
allow time for the students to write down the fats.
When the teacher is done reading the book she will ask the students to share their fun
facts with their science table groups. The teacher will allow the students to converse
for a few moments and will then ask the students to share the facts with her.
The teacher will collect these sheets to see what the students pulled from the book.
The PowerPoint:
The teacher will then draw the students attention up to the front.
The teacher will go over the self- created PowerPoint. As the teacher is going over the
PowerPoint, the students will follow along with the PowerPoint packet the teacher
printed out for them.
o Slide 1: Introduce what will be taught.
o Slide 2: What are some things that you already know about the sun? As the
students tell the teacher what they already know about the sun, the teacher will
add it into the PowerPoint on slide 2.
o Slide 3: The sun is the star which the Earth orbits around.
o Slide 4: The corona is the outer most part of the suns atmosphere.
o Slide 5: The core is the center of the sun.
o Slide 6: The radioactive zone is the section of the solar interior between the
innermost core and the outer convective zone.
o Slide 7: The convection zone is the zone where the light is created.
o Slide 8: The photosphere is the surface of the sun.
o Slide 9: Sun spots are the dark spots that are on the sun.
The teacher will pause the PowerPoint here.
After reviewing the slides with the class, the teacher will answer any questions that the
students have.
Once all questions are answered, the teacher will introduce the project.
Introducing the sun model:
First, the teacher will hand out the rubric and the instructions.
Then, the teacher will explain the instructions to the class.
o We are going to make a model of the sun! Once the model is done, the parts of
the sun have to be labeled. The parts of the sun that need to be on the model
include
Sun
Corona
Core
Convection Zone
Radiative Zone
Sun spots
Photosphere
The teacher will then continue the PowerPoint to show the class examples.
Once the class goes over the examples, the teacher will inform the class that they have
one week to complete the assignment and that it will be an at home assignment.
The teacher will be sure that the students understand everything that is needed.
The trivia questions:

Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
The teacher will da a sun on the front board. The teacher will hand out one sticky note

learned on the sticky note, they then have to stick it up onto the sun that is on the
board. The teacher will read off the notes and will discuss the topics if the child
chooses to.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
The students are allowed to draw if they do not know how to write their responses.
