Interview Answers

- Describe the setting, the grades you taught and explain the purpose of

this placement:

During my 5th teaching practice, I went to Al Darary Kindergarten. This

Kindergarten has 12 classes, 6 KG1 and KG2 classes. This kindergarten has only

2 English teachers and 1 Nurse. I got assigned to Ms. Jameelas KG 2/3

classroom, and my MST was Ms. Hamda. The students are consisted of 11 boys

and 11 girls, between the ages 4 to 6. The purpose of this placement is to observe,

teach and get the opportunity to learn new teaching methods and strategies from a

variety of teachers.

- How did you demonstrate professional behavior as a trainee teacher in

the school? Explain how you maintained your professional status not

only in your own classroom but also across the school.

One of my goals this semester was to maintain a professional teacher-student

relationship right from the start, let the children know that Im more of their

teacher than a friend or a guest. This helped me with my lessons, the students

viewed me as someone theyd respect and follow their instructions. I tried my best

to maintain my professional status across the school by greeting everyone, helping

them, and voluntarily offering help before they could ask me.
- Explain how conducting and receiving one formal peer observations

helped you to develop professionally?

It helped me to know what I was doing wrong and which area I needed to develop

and work on for my future lessons.

- Explain how you collaborated with other staff in activities that involve

the community during this placement.

On 23rd of October 2017, the kindergarten held a traffic safety day, where the

police men came and gave the students a few words and a marching band

performed around the kindergarten. The teachers had to escort the students who

were performing on stage, and I helped by giving the other students in the

classroom activities related to traffic safety, e.g. coloring the traffic light.

- Describe the process you went thorough in order to plan an integrated,

thematic unit of work in partnership with your MST. How were you

guided in this by your own teaching philosophy?

Before every lesson, I would go and discuss with her about their curriculum

to know what the students learning outcome.

- What difficulties did you face in planning seven differentiated lesson

plans to ensure that they included a range of activity types for the whole

class, groups, and individuals

At the beginning, I didnt know the students levels and how they will

respond to my teaching. That made me set the bar low, but after a few times

teaching I knew that the students achieve the learning outcome fast and

repetition had a role in their learning.

- Explain how you assessed the learning objectives/outcomes you set the

students.

I would use a checklist during their first lesson and have another checklist during

revision which helped me compare the results and check the students progress and

improvement. I would also take pictures as evidence.

- Explain what you did to make sure that your modeling / demonstration

of the tasks you set your students was clear and effective.

I choose simple yet fun activities for them, and made sure to answer all

students questions. I structured their activities so that the students can

scaffold for practicing the concept.

- What strategies did you apply to maintain student engagement and how

effective were they in ensuring that tasks were completed effectively?

I used a variety of simple, short, yet fun activities to keep them engaged. I

noticed that the students were more engaged when I took them to explore

and play at the playground.

- Provide examples of how you developed student independence and

responsibility in your classes.

I developed student independence and responsibility by avoiding doing something

for them that they do for themselves. For example, tying their own shoes, set the

table, cleaning up the table after meal. When handing out worksheets I would

prepare two and ask them which one theyd like to work on, this allows them to

make choices and decisions on their own.

- What strategies did you use to monitor student progress across a range

of connected teaching sessions including class, group, pair, and

individual work.

I would compare previous and current checklists and ask them follow-up

questions.
- Provide examples of and describe the formative assessment instruments

such as anecdotal notes, checklists, Traffic Lights, photos, children self-

assessment, Learning Journey, etc.. you used to evaluate student

performance in a variety of activity types

- Class checklists is a great method to use when collecting data. The checklist

would focus on particular aspects of learning, such as skills, achievements,

and areas that need improvement. By the end of the term, the teacher can

look back and see the students progression and share it with the parents and

students. I used the checklist frequently this semester and it helped me keep

up with the students learning, I would also write comments and share it with

my MST.
- Which teaching strategies did you find were particularly effective and

explained why with reference to educational theory and/or experience?

The teaching strategy I used is social/cooperative learning. During one of

my Math revision activities, I escorted the students to the playground and

had to pair students at different levels and watched them help one another.

Vygotsky believed that social interaction is an important component when it

comes to learning. He concluded that children need to talk about the

problems and concepts for them to understand and successfully apply it

(Vygotsky, 1978).

- Identify and critically evaluate the influence of a range of stakeholders

at your school e.g. Ministry of Education, Principal, parents, etc.

The roles and responsibilities of:

Principal: Ensure the delivery of high quality education to all students,

provide a safe environment.

Teachers: Teaching, preparing, and planning of programs to achieve students

learning outcomes, provide safe environment. Provide the school with

professional advice regarding teaching strategies and approaches, keep the

parents involved in their childs education.

Parents: Volunteer to help at workshops, get involved in their childs

education, and help the school offer the children the best education.

- Explain how closely you were able to apply key principles from your

own teaching philosophy as a student teacher in this school?

My teaching philosophy is that its necessary to treat children equally, I think that

love, respect, and patience is very important to both myself and the students. I

applied it at this school especially in the classroom, where I would treat all students

equally, despite their different learning levels and also spend time with each one of

them and maintain a teacher-student relationship.

- What would you say have been your particular strengths during this

TP? Which areas for development have you identified for next semester

- justify this?

I feel like I succeeded in developing my classroom management, I would

like to keep working on my Time Management and have a clearer voice.
