Tips to Make Good Invocations
1. Invoke Allah with humility and in secret
The Quran says, “Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. He likes not the aggressors.” (Al A’raf
[7]:55). Ibnu Jarir at Tabari, a great tafsir Quran scholar commented on this verse, saying that it means we
should invoke Allah with humility. Our heart should be full of submissiveness to obey Him and convinced
that He is One and only. We should not invoke Him loudly only to show off our invocations to people.

2. Invoke Allah with fear and hope

The Quran says, “…and invoke Him with fear and hope; Surely, Allâh's Mercy is (ever) near unto the good-
doers.”(Al A’raf [7]:56)
Ibnu Kathir, another well-known tafsir Quran scholar, commented on this verse. He said, we should invoke
Allah with fear of Allah’s punishment and hope for His reward. Allah’s mercy is ever near unto the good-
doers who implement His ordains and leave His prohibitions. (Tafsir al Quran al Karim)

3. Invoke Allah in Best Times

The Prophet (may peace of Allah upon him) mentioned several best times to make invocations. Among them
are as follows.
a. In the last third of the night
Narrated Abu Huraira, Allah's Apostle said, "When it is the last third of the night, our Lord, the Blessed, the
Superior, descends every night to the heaven of the world and says, 'Is there anyone who invokes Me
(demand anything from Me), that I may respond to his invocation; Is there anyone who asks Me for
something that I may give (it to) him; Is there anyone who asks My forgiveness that I may forgive him?' "
(Shahih al Bukhari)
b. At The End Of The Obligatory Salat
Narrated Abu Umamah, Allah’s Messenger (may peace of Allah upon him ) was asked, “O Messenger of
Allah, which supplication is heard (by Allah)? He said, “The end of the night and at the end of the
obligatory Salat (prayer)” (at-Tirmidhi). This time is after saying 'At-tahyat' , and before making Taslim
(finishing prayer).
c. Between adzan and iqamah
Anas narrated that Allah’s Messenger said: “A supplication made between the Adhan and Iqama is not
rejected.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi, an-Nasai,Ibnu Hibban –valid)
d. During Fasting
The prophet (peace of Allah upon him) declared, “Three men whose invocation is never rejected (by Allah)
are: when a fasting person breaks fast (in another narration, the fasting person until he breaks his fast), the
just ruler and the one who is oppressed.”(Ahmad, at-Tirmidzi – good)
