Philo 1 Applied Philosophy
Second Semester, SY 2014-2015

COURSE TITLE: Applied Philosophy

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course is designed to give students an analytical background that can be used to explore other
contemporary social and political issues. It specifically focuses on philosophical principles and themes which
can be vital in the practice of the social work profession.

TIME DURATION: 54 hours

CREDIT UNITS: 3 units

PLACEMENT: BSSW 3-A and BSSW 3-B

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course should enable the students to:


1. Describe and evaluate a range of philosophical views on selected applied philosophical topics.
2. Engage in critical analysis and the assessment of arguments over a range of topics in applied philosophy.
3. Grasp the deeper principles and issues which underlie the topics.
4. Critically examine the application of philosophical concepts and skills to policy and institutional problems
and dilemmas.

Notes: 27 hours is allotted for mid-term period, and 27 hours for final period and in case the required classroom contact
hours are unmet (due to weather conditions, holidays and similar valid reasons), take home readings and activities as
well as online communication will be utilized to accomplish the syllabus content.
