De nitions of Arcs

Answer the questions from the De nitions of Arcs tab here.

What was your de nition of a semi-circle? *

A) an arc with a measure of 180

B) an arc that is half of a circle

Both A and B

What did you come up with for the de nition of a minor arc? *
A minor arc is smaller than a semi-circle and it has a measure of less than 180 degrees.

Central Angles

Answer the questions from the Central Angle tab here.

Why is angle ACB called a central angle? *

Angle ACB is a called a central angle because it's vertex is at the center of the circle.

What do you think the relationship between the central angle and the
intercepted arc is? *
The measure of the central angle and the measure of the arc are equal.

Inscribed Angles

Answer the questions from the inscribed Angles tab below.

Why do you think angle ABC is called an inscribed angle? *

Angle ABC is an inscribed angle because it's endpoints and vertex are on the circle.

What is the relationship between the inscribed angle and the intercepted arc
it creates? Explain your reasoning. *
The measure of the inscribed angle is half the measure of the intercepted arc. We came to this
conclusion because we noticed that the angle measure was half of the arc measure. We
moved the endpoints A and C around the circle and this assumption still held true.

Write up a formula for the relationship of the inscribed angle and the
intercepted arc it creates that always hold true. *
inscribed angle = (1/2) intercepted arc

Exterior Angle

Answer your questions from the Outside Angle tab here.

What is the relationship between angle ABC and the intercepted arcs?
Explain your reasoning. *
Angle ABC is equal to half the difference of the larger arc and the smaller arc. We could see the
measure of the angle stayed smaller than some combination of the arcs, so we measured the
angle and the arcs. We then noticed the relationship listed above after we moved the points of
the picture around some.

Write up a formula for the relationship between the outside angle and the
intercepted arcs. *
Outside angle = (1/2) (larger arc - smaller arc)

on the outside angle tab. Do not forget to include an answer to the second
part of the challenge question.

Interior angle

Answer the questions from the Inside Angle tab here.

What is the relationship between angle ABC and the intercepted arcs (in
blue)? *
Angle ABC is equal to half the sum of the intercepted arcs. We found this by measuring the
arcs and angle and looking at how those measures were related.

Write up a formula for the relationship between the inside angle and the
intercepted arcs. *
inside angle = (1/2) (sum of the intercepted arcs)

What would the relationship be between the angle ABC and arc AFC be if we
moved point B to the center of the circle? Explain
The angle measure and the arc measure would be equal because angle ABC would be a central
angle.
