ReadingtheGreenLanguageofLight

PartOne
Divinationisoneofman'soldestspiritualtechnologies,its
originslostintheshiftfromneolithichuntergathererstosettled
agriculturalists.Astheshamandevelopedintothepriest,
divination,alongwithallformsofspiritism,becamecodified
intomythology.Fromaframeworkofmythiceventsand
divinationliterallyreadingsofthedivinecamelanguage,
whichevolvedovertimeintowrittenformsbasedonthe
originalsymbolicelements.Inturn,thesesymbolicelements
becamethefocusofdivinatorypracticesoftheirown,creating
subsetsofmeaningwithincommonwordsandphrases.From
thisintentionalambiguityarosethepossibilityofaninitiate's
language,alanguageofthebirds,or,asitwasexpressedby
themedievalinitiates,theGreenLanguage.

AlthoughwecanpointtotheGreenLanguageinworksas
diverseasMidsummerNight'sDreamandTheChymical
WeddingofChristianRosencruz,Nostradamus'quatrains,18th
centuryalchemicaltextsandsurrealistmanifestos,fewauthors
havebotheredtoexplainit.OnewhodidwasFulcanelli,the
enigmatic20th centuryalchemistandphilosopher,inhis
masterpieceTheMysteryoftheCathedrals,publishedinParis
in1926.[1]Herewehaveanauthentic,althoughmysterious,
voiceofauthorityonethatwasbothmasteroftheGreen
Languageitself,andamasterofthesubjectsusuallyhidden
withinit.

Fulcanelli'smainpoint,thekeytounravelingthelarger
mysteryofalchemyandthecathedrals,liesinan
understandingofwhathecallsthe"phoneticlaw"ofthe
"spokencabala,"orthe"LanguageoftheBirds."This
punning,multilingualwordplaycanbeusedtorevealunusual
and,accordingtoFulcanelli,meaningfulassociationsbetween
ideas."Whatunsuspectedmarvelsweshouldfind,ifweknew
howtodissectwords,tostripthemoftheirbarksandliberate
thespirit,thedivinelight,whichiswithin,"Fulcanelliwrites.
Heclaimsthatinourdaythisisthenaturallanguageofthe
outsiders,theoutlawsandhereticsatthefringesofsociety.

Itwasalsothe"greenlanguage"oftheFreemasons("Allthe
Initiatesexpressedthemselvesincant,"Fulcanelliremindsus)
whobuilttheartgothiqueofthecathedrals.Ultimatelythe"art
cot,"orthe"artoflight,"isderivedfromtheLanguageofthe
Birds,whichseemstobeasortofUrlanguagetaughtbyboth
Jesusandtheancients.ItisalsomentionedintheSufitext,
entitled"TheConferenceoftheBirds,"byAttartheChemist.
IndeTassey'sFrenchtranslationofthiswork,which
Fulcanellireferences,the"conference"ofthetitleistranslated
as"language."DeTasseygoesontoexplainthecomplex
linguisticmetaphorbeneaththesimplefable.Fulcanelliuses
thesamemethodtodecodethealchemicalmeaningofthe
cathedrals.

FulcanellialsoclaimsthatRabelais'GargantuaandPantagruel
is"anovelincant,"thatis,writteninthesecretlanguage.
Offhandedly,hethrowsinTiresias,theGreekseerwho
revealedtomortalsthesecretsofOlympus.Tiresiaswastaught
thelanguageofthebirdsbyAthena,thegoddessofwisdom.
Justascasually,Fulcanellimentionsthesimilaritybetween
gothicandgoetic,suggestingthatgothicartisamagicart.

Emphasizingthephoneticconnectiontoargot,cantorslang,
FulcanellithenlinksittotheArgonauts,ofthequestforthe
GoldenFleece,byinsistingthatthecrewoftheArgospoke
theGreenLanguageasitsailed"towardsthefelicitousshores
ofColchos."Hesuggeststhatthelanguageofthisquestisthe
foundationofallinitiation"AllInitiatesexpressedthemselves
incant."InthesamesentencehelinksthisideawiththeCourt
ofMiraclesofthetroubadourpoetVillonandtheartistswho
builtthecathedrals,implyingthatthesegroupsweresomehow
thesamenautes,orsailors,astheArgonauts.[2]

Byanystandardofcomparison,thisisanunusualcollectionof
allusionsandassertions,evenforahermeticauthor.Fulcanelli
seemstobetellingus,asplainlyaspossible,thatthemediumis
themessage.Theargotistheartoflight,thecoreofaGnostic
philosophyexpoundedsoeloquentlybyFulcanelliinthe
paragraphthatfollowsimmediatelyaftertheartoflight
statement."Language,"Fulcanellitellsusinthatpassage,"the
instrumentofthespirit,hasalifeofitsowneventhoughitis
onlyareflectionoftheuniversalIdea."ThisGnosticmeta
linguisticmysticismisthecoreitseemsofilluminationitself.

FromtheworkofmodernmolecularbiologistsFritzAlbert
PoppandMaeWanHo,weknowthatDNAemitsaweak
formofcoherentlightthathasbeendemonstratedtoworklike
acommunicationsystembetweencellsandevenbetween
largerorganisms.[3]Inthissense,theartoflightisindeedthe
instrumentofthespirit.Itisnothinglessthanthemechanism,
theframeworksotospeak,thatallowsMindtoexistinthe
universe.Thelanguageoflightemittedandreceivedbythe
DNAmaybetheoriginalofalllanguages,theultimate
languageofinitiation.

Fulcanelliclearlyunderstoodthis,asheshowswhenhestates
thatargot,theinitiationoftheArgonauts,isbut"oneofthe
formsderivedfromTheLanguageoftheBirds."ThisUr
language,Fulcanelliinsists,isthecommonlanguageof
initiationandilluminationbehindculturalexpressionsas
differentastheChristian,theInca,themedievaltroubadours
andtheancientGreeks.Andtracesofitcanbefoundinthe
dialectsofPicardyandProvence,andmostimportantofall,in
thelanguageoftheGypsies.

Thesearestunningassertions.Fulcanelliinformsusthatthe
westerncabalausedbythetroubadoursandthebuildersofthe
cathedralsisbasedonthelanguageoftheArgonautsandthe
questfortheGoldenFleece.Whichinturnisbutone
applicationofavastUrlanguageofsymbols,derivedperhaps
fromtheDNAitself,thatunitetheglobalculturesofmankind,
fromtheIncatotheancientGreeks.And,totopitoff,hetold
usthattracesofitcanbefoundinthelanguageoftheGypsies,
afairlyobviousreferencetotheTarot,longheldtobeaGypsy
invention.IshetellingusthattheGreenLanguage,whichis
heardaccordingtoDavidOvasononlybythose"whohave
clothedthemselvesintheskinofthedragon,"[4]issimplya
symbolicapproximationoftheinformation,transmittedby
weaklaserpulses,comingfromourDNA?

AccordingtotheworkofanthropologistJeremyNarby,this
Urlanguageoflightisa"foresttelevision"ofimagesinwhich
"DNAisasnakedshapedmasteroftransformationthatlivesin
waterandisbothextremelylongandsmall,singleanddouble.
Justlikethecosmicserpent."[5]Hisassessmentagreeswith
Ovason'scommentsthatonlyonewhohastheskinofthe
dragon,orhasbecomeonewiththecosmicserpentofDNA,
canunderstandthissymboliclanguageoflight.

Coulditbepossible,bylookingatthestructureofDNA,to
reconstructthisdragon'sspeech,thisgreenlanguageoflight's
syntax,grammarandvocabulary?Andcoulditbe,as
Fulcanellisuggests,thatfragmentsofthatoriginallanguageof
lightcanbefoundinthedivinatorysystemsusedbyallnautes,
shamanandinitiates?

PartTwo
ThebasicsofheredityhaveknownsinceGregorMendel's
experimentswithpeas,butthediscoveryofDNAasthecarrier
ofgeneticinformationrevolutionizedourunderstandingoflife
itself.Fiftyyearslater,weareonthevergeofagenetic
revolutionwiththepossibilityofclones,geneticdisease
eradicationinthewombandperhapssomedaysoon,designer
humans.AninspirationhitJamesWatsonashewalkeddown
aspiralstaircase,andinhismind'seyehesawthestructureof
DNAasadoublehelix.[6]

Deoxyribonucleicacid,DNA,isachainlikemoleculeofgreat
length,1.3meters,andhighmolecularweightinadouble
strandtwistedlikethatspiralstaircasethatinspiredWatsona
doublehelixwithplusandminusstrands.Thestranditself
consistsoftwochainsofalternatingacidsandsugarsina
simplebuildingblocklikesystem.Thestrandsarejoinedat
regularintervalsbyrungsmadeofapairofbases.Thereare
fourbases,thymine,alwayspairedwithadenine,andcystine,
alwayspairedwithguanine.Thus,A,T,C,Gare"letters"
pairedwithT,A,G,Candbecauseofthestructuretheyfit
togetherperfectly,liketheteethofazipper.[7]

Thesebasepairsform"words"thatareinstructionstobuildan
aminoacidcompound.Thereare64such"words"andoneor
moreofthesewordsrepresenttheinstructionandinformation
necessarytocreateoneofthe22aminoacidsusedtocreatethe
proteinstructureofalivingbody.Thesumofallthesecode
wordsandaminoacidsentencesformstheblueprintfora
specificentity,includingelementsthatdeterminethe
individual'sfate.Andthestrandswithallthisinformationare
presentineveryundifferentiatedcellnucleus,ascriptorbook
withsignificance,expression,meaning,allthehallmarksoflife
itself.[8]
In1968,MarieLouisevonFranz,adiscipleofCarlJung,
publishedanessayinananthologyofpsychologyarticles
entitled"SymboldesUnusMundus".Asanasideinheressay
aboutalchemicalsymbolism,Dr.vonFranzspeculatedthat
theremightbesomestructurallinkbetweentheIChingand
therecentlydiscoveredDNAcode.[9]Ayearlater,a
physician,Dr.MartinSchonbergerpublishedasmallarticlein
anobscureGermanmedicalmagazine,Zeitschriftfur
AllgemeinmedizinDerLandarzt,No.16/1969,inwhichhe
presented"theastonishingparallelsbetweenthenatural
scienceoftheIChingandthelatestdiscoveriesofnuclear
genetics."

Dr.Schonberger'scomparisonscanbesummarizedas:1)Both
theDNAandtheIChingarebasedonpolarity,yinandyang
inthecaseoftheIChing,upanddownsymmetryinthecase
ofDNA'sdoublehelix2)Four"letters"areavailable,

Twoofthesetripletshavenames,beginningandend.Inthe
DNAtheyserveaspunctuationbetweencodesequences.In
theIChing,wehavehexagrams#63and#64,whichserve
thesamepurpose.

Dr.vonFranz,aJungianpsychoanalyst,wasthefirsttonotice
thesimilarity,64unitsmadeofthreeoutoffourpossible
components,betweenthetwobutittookthepractical
mysticismofaworkingphysiciantoelaboratetheessential
question:"Isthereonlyonespiritwhosemanifestation(=
information)mustofnecessityfinditsexpressioninthe64
wordsofthegeneticcodeononehandandthe64possible
statesanddevelopmentsoftheIChingontheother?"[10]

SoonafterDr.Schonberger'sarticlewaspublished,Fritz
AlbertPoppbeganhisgroundbreakingworkonbiophoton
emissionandcommunicationbytheDNA.AssoonasDr.
SchonbergerlearnedofDr.Popp'searlywork,hewrotetohim
andaskedhisopinion."Sinceinformationandmattercrossin
thegeneticcode,itmaybeexpectedthatevolutionhasselected
themostfavorable,i.e.thesurest,andatthesametimemost
economical,principle,"Dr.Poppwroteback."Theonly
solutiontotheproblemistoseekunderstandingofDNAas
youhavedone,fromtheinformationtheoryangle."[11]

Followingthisadvice,Schonbergerelaboratedhisarticleintoa
smallbook,TheIChingandTheGeneticCode:TheHidden
KeytoLife,publishedinGermanyin1973.Forthesecond
editionin1977,Popphimselfaddedashortafterwardinwhich
herestatedtheessentialquestion:"Isthereaconnection
betweenthissubstantiatedreflectionofbiologicalevolution
andthepurpose,theindicationandthemeaningofLife?"This
question,asPoppnotes,"focusesourcuriosityonthephase
borderbetweenthesyntaxandsemanticsoftheDNA
structure."

Inotherwords,iftheIChingisanaccurateanalogyforthe
syntaxofthegeneticcode,thenwhatdoesthatimplyabout
fate,freewillandahostofotherreligiousandspiritualissues?
Evenifwecanreadthis"encyclopaediaofbiological
evolution,"bymeansofa"hiddenkeytolife,"ashasbeen
donebythehumangenomeproject,thewhatdoesthatimply
abouthumanevolution?CouldageneticIChing,assuggested
bySchonberger,functionasa"periodicsystemofthespiritual
element"fortheevolutionofformsofevergreatercomplexity
andselfawareness?[12]

PartThree
Tobegintoanswerthesecrucialquestions,wemustfirstlook
attheoriginsoftheIChing.Therehavebeenhominidswe
wouldrecognizeashumaninChinaforoverfivehundred
thousandyears.Abouteightthousandyearsago,therudiments
ofcivilizationappeared.Afewthousandyearslater,around
3,000BCE,asortofprotoculturedevelopedintheupper
Yangtsevalley.Likesomanyoftheprotocultureswhich
formedaroundtheplanetwithinafewhundredsyearsofthat
date,theancientChineseculturecenteredonanImmortal.[13]

Atthedawnoftime,FuHsi,theprimordialculturebringer
whoinventedthecalendar,writingandtheorganizationof
societyandwhosenameliterallymeansEmbodiedWisdom,
triedtoexplaintheworkingsofI,awordusuallytranslatedas
"change."Todothis,wearetoldintheGreatCommentary
supposedlywrittenbyConfucius,he"observedthe
phenomenaoftheheavensandgazeddowntoobservethe
contoursoftheearth."Healsoobservedhisowninternal
processesandtheirreflectionsinnatureandthen"went
beyondthistotakeideasfromotherthings.Thusheinvented
theeighttrigramsinordertocomprehendthevirtuesof
spiritualbeingsandrepresenttheconditionsofallthingsof
creation."[14]

Inoneversionofthelegend,FuHsiseestheeighttrigrams,or
primalgroupingsofbrokenandunbrokenlines,onthebackof
aturtle,whichgivesusaclueastohowtheoraclewas
originallypracticed.Theeighttrigramsdescribethemajor
conceptsoftheancientChineseecophilosophywhichallrefer
backtothecentralimageoftheI,or,asanearlyChouauthor
definedit,"Change:thatistheunchangeable."Theword
beganasapictogramofthecosmiclizardordragon,and
meantthe"fixed,"orthe"straight,"inthesenseofthecosmic
andunchangingaxisoftheuniverse.Appliedtotheideaof
"time,"theworldaxiscametodenote"change"inorderto
describetheperceivedevolutionofpatternsandrhythms.[15]

Thesepatternswereconceivedasthecolddarkyieldingforces
ofYinandthehotbrightexpansiveforcesofYang,bothof
whicharebutfluctuationsintheChi.Thesefluctuationsgive
risetothefiveelementsmetal,wood,water,fireandearth
whoseinteractionsinturnproduceallthings.Theseeight
conceptsaresymbolizedbytheeightprimaltrigrams:the
trigramsHeavenandEarthrepresentYangandYin,whilethe
trigramThunderrepresentstheChi.Theotherfive,Lake,
Fire,Wind,WaterandMountainconveytheessenceofthe
fiveelements,metal,fire,wood,waterandearth.

FuHsi'srealizationoftheeighttrigramsproducesfirstofalla
gnomicorgeometricviewoftheuniverse'sexpansion,from
firstcausetotherealityeventhorizonsymbolizedbythe64
hexagrams.TheOnebecomestwo,YinandYang,whichin
turnproducesfour,thedirections,theneight,thetrigrams,and
thenonto64,thehexagrams.Thiswasthoughtofasthe
primallinearorder,ofboththetrigramsandtheirresulting
hexagrams.Thiscanalsobeseenastheprimalbinarymatrix,a
sortofmastersetofoff/onswitchesbywhichlifeunfolds
throughtimebymeansofchange.[16]

Thenumber64isunusualinseveralways.Thereare64
codons,ofthreenucleotideunitseach,usedbyDNAand
RNAtospecifytheaminoacidsneededforproteinsynthesis.
Wecanthinkofthesecodonsasataxonomy,acompleteand
selfreferencinggroupofsymbols,thatdescribesthe
possibilitiesofbiologicalevolution.Interestinglyenough,
evidencefromanthropologyalsosuggeststhat64isthe
maximumnumberofentitiesthatcanbecontainedinone
folkloricunit.Fromthisitfollowsthatthemaximumlevelof
culturalcomplexityisalsocontrolledbythelawof2tothe6th
power,or64.Thisconnectionbetweentheevolutionof
proteinsfromDNAandthedevelopmentofcultural
complexityfromarchetypalexperienceformsthebasisoftheI
Ching.[17]

Whilethereareotherwaystoorganizethetrigramsand
thereforethehexagrams,theprimallinearorderseemsto
representsomebasicstructureoflifeitself.FuHsi,the
EmbodiedWisdom,seemstohavebeentellingusthatthe
wisdomisalsoencodedwithinallofus.Indeed,thearchaic
pictogramfortheoracleresemblesnothingsomuchasaway
toaligntheI,orcosmiccenter,withtheunfoldedspiralsof
DNAderivedlife.

However,asthetextattributedtoConfuciusnoted,FuHsi
wentbeyondthecodeoflife.Healsogaveusawayto
understandhowourDNAfitswithinthelargerpatternsof
celestialalignmentsandtemporaldevelopment.Thelogical
waytoturnthelinear,binaryorderofthetrigramsintoa
circularpatternistomatchpairsofopposites.Thisproduces
theprimalorcelestialarrangement,whichrepresentsthelarger
patternsoftimeandchange.Wecaninfactalignthisprimal
patterntothefourcornersoftheuniverse,thesocalled
galacticsolsticesandequinoxes,andtherebyderivethequality
oftimeforeachtrigram'sageorera.

Thetrigramsusedtomarktheselargeperiodsoftime,theslow
changesoftheages,canalsobearrangedtoshowtheyearly
cycleofnaturalandecologicalchange.Thistemporal
arrangementbeginsinthespringwiththeappearanceofthe
Chitrigram,Thunder,andthenproceedstodeveloptheChi
throughtheyeartoperfectioninthelatewinter,earthtrigram
Mountain,orKeepingStill,fromwhichtheChireemergesin
thespring.

ThereforeFuHsi'srevelationprovidesuswithawayto
understandtheevolutionofthelifecodes,ourDNA,within
theorganizationofthespace/timematrixfromwhichrealityis
formed.Eacharrangementoftrigramscanbeusedtogenerate
asequenceofthe64hexagrams,whichdescribesthechanges,
orrelationships,withinthatlevelofreality.Thus,thelinearor
binarysequencedescribesthediversityoflifeproduced
throughtheactionoftRNA,thecelestialsequencedescribes
thequalityoftimeastheevolutionoftheresultsofaction,
whattheHinduscallkarma,andthetemporalsequence
describestheunfoldingofthelifeforce,theChi,throughthe
yearandthelandscape.Byreferringtoallthree,atotalpicture
ofrealityemerges.[18]

PartFour
TheIChingistheoldestbookintheworlditsbasicstructure
developedinprehistory.Confucius,inhisGreatCommentary,
creditedtheprehistoricThreeAugustOnesandtheFive
AugustEmperorswithorderingtheworldaccordingtoits
precepts.FromtheChouLi,orBookofChouRitesdating
fromaround1000BCE,welearnthattheBookoftheIwas
onlyoneofthreepropheticordivinatorybooksknowntothe
ancientChinese.TheLiChi,oneoftheFiveClassics,informs
usthatturtleshellswereincommonusageindivinationusing
asystemderivedfromFuHsi'strigrams.Allthatwecanreally
knowofitsoriginsisthatbythe12thcenturyBCE,theoracle
hadtakenitsbasicformof64binaryhexagrams.[19]

Apparently,uptothispoint,norecognizedinterpretationsof
thepatternsexisted.Eachpractitionerwasfreetointerpretthe
patternsofthehexagramsintheirownway.However,around
themiddleofthe12thcenturyBCE,thelateShangdynasty
deposedandimprisonedoneoftheirdependents,KingWen.
Whileinprison,KingWenturnedhisattentiontowriting
descriptions,orjudgments,onthe64hexagrams.Bycareful
useoftheideasrevealedinhisstudy,KingWenwasableto
affecthisreleaseandthereinstatementofhiskingdom.
Perhapsforthisreason,hisjudgmentshaveeversincebeen
seenasdefinitive.

KingWenpassedhisknowledgeontohisson,Tan,thePrince
ofChou,founderoftheChoudynastythateventually
overthrewtheShang.ThePrinceofChouiscreditedwith
havingpassedonthewisdomofhisfatherinhisjudgmentson
thelinesofthe64hexagrams.These384descriptionsforma
unifiedfieldofunderstandingwhereallthreeperspectiveson
theeighttrigramsandtheirsubsequentsequencesof
hexagramscanbeexplored.[20]

Imaginethatabeingfromanadvancedculturegaveyouatoy
designedtobothentertainyouandinstructyouintheworkings
ofourrealitymatrix.Thetoyworkslikethis:atanymoment,
youcanfreezetheflowoftimeintoaverysmallslicewhich
notonlytellsyouthenatureofthemoment,butwhyyou
choseit,theramificationsofhavingchosenit,andthreeother
coordinatesofchangethatcreatethemomentandthechoice.

Essentially,theIChing,thegiftofFuHsi,issuchatoy.Any
meansofrandomselectioncanbeusedcountingyarrow
stalks,tossingcoinsorabinarycomputerprogramtoprovide
thehexagram,whichmarksthequalityofthatmoment.This
hexagramistheninterpretedbyvariousmethodsandthen
relatedtootherhexagramstoprovideaninclusiveandholistic
perspectiveontheevolutionofthatmomentintime.Thevalue
ofsuchknowledge,however,comesfromourabilitytomake
useofit.

Andthis,perhaps,wasthegeniusofKingWen.Inadditionto
writingtheenigmaticjudgments,KingWenalsodesigneda
waytostructurethehexagramsinpairssothattheincrementof
changebetweenthepairsdescribedtherhythmicstructureof
thatelusivequalitythenowortheeverchangingpresent.This
discoveryanimatedthelargerstructuresdescribedbyFuHsi's
trigramssothattimeorchangewasrenderedinteractive.King
Wen'sarrangementbecamethestandardsequenceusedin
mostversionsoftheIChing,andformillenniawasthe
preferredwaytoconsulttheoracle.Itsurvivedbecauseit
worked.ThroughtheKingWenarrangement,itwaspossible
tohaveadialoguewiththisancientsourceofwisdom.

Howthisactuallyworkedwasamysteryuntilrecently.Carl
Jung'sstudyoftheIChingledtohistheoryofsynchronicityas
anacausalconnectingprinciple,buthewasunabletoseehow
theflowofarchetypesformedmeaningfulstructuresinan
acausalmanner.Synchronicitycouldbedefinedasa
psychologicalevent,theprojectionofmeaningontoa
backgroundofrandomness,butJungleftunansweredthe
questionofmeaningitself.Doesthistemporaluniverse
inhabitedbybiologicalentitiestrulyhavea"meaning?"[21]

Perhapsnotameaning,butatleasta"destiny."Oneofthe
commentariesontheIChingattributedtoConfuciustellsus
that"thefuturelikewisedevelopsinaccordancewiththefixed
laws,accordingtocalculablenumbers...Thisisthethought
onwhichtheBookofChangesisbased."Anotherevenolder
commentaryinformsusthat"countingthatwhichisgoinginto
thepastdependsontheforwardmovement.Knowingthat
whichistocomedependsonthebackwardmovement.Thisis
whytheBookofChangeshasbackwardmovingnumbers."
ClearlytheearlycommentatorsandinterpreterssawtheI
Chingassomethingvastlymoresignificantthanasimple
oracle.[22]

Butwhatexactly?Thisquestionwasansweredbyacoupleof
thecentury'smostbrilliantminds.TheMcKennabrothers,

organizationofspace/time.

TheMcKennasdemonstratedthisbyoverlayingthe384lines
ofthe64hexagrams(6x64=384)onthe13monthlunar
calendar(13X29.53days=383.89days).Theythenused
thesebasicunitstodevelopatemporallockwiththe
solar/sunspotcycle,theZodiacalAges,andthelengthofthe
GreatYearofprecessionalmotion.Withthesameincrement,
64,theyfounditwaspossibletoassemblea26stepmodelof
space/timefromthesize/ageoftheuniversedowntoPlanck's
Constant.Inthisview,theIChingisafractalmodelofallthat
is,was,orwillbe.Itisalsohologramic,inthatthepiece,theI
Ching,containstheinformationofthewhole,theevolving
universe.

ApplyingthisrealizationtothestructureoftheKingWen
arrangementproducesamodeloftheholonicnatureof
evolution.Ifwethinkofthetimefromtheemergenceoflifeon
earthtotheimmediatefuture,roughly1.3billionyears,asone
incrementandthenbegintodividethatby64,someinteresting
timeperiodsarehighlighted.Ourfirstdivision,one64thof1.3
billionyears,bringsustothehighpointofthemammals,18
millionyearsago.Thenextdivisionby64bringsusto
275,000BCE,thedawnofHomoSapiens.Dividingagainby
64bringsustothehighpointoftheancientculturessuchas
theEgyptianaround2300BCE.Anotherdivisionbringsusto
themid20thcenturyandthelast67+yearsofthecycle.
Accordingtothisview,allofbiologicalandcosmologicaltime
isapproachingapointofconcrescenceinthenearfuture.The
McKennabrotherswentlookingforpossibledatesforthis
concrescenceanddecidedthatthehelicalrisingofthewinter
solsticesunrisein2012matchedtherequirements.Itwould
certainlybeaneventofcosmologicalsignificancethatcould
serveasasymboloftheconcrescenceitself.TheMcKennas
foundthatthisdatealsomatchedthewaveformderivedfrom

Alloftheinformation,"novelty"astheMcKennascalledit,
thatwasgeneratedinthecourseofthepreviousbillionsof
yearsfromtheformationoftheearthtothepresentis
compressedandrecapitulatedinthelast67+years.Therefore
wecanapplythesamescaleofdivision,creatinganew
hexagramichierarchy,tothis67+yearperiod.Withinthis
timeperiod,thereare64groupsof384days,whichcover
threemajorandsixminorsunspotcycles.Whenthewavefront
ofconcrescenceisappliedtothetimeperiod,wefindthatthe
firstnodefallsonthebeginningofthelast384daycycle.The
McKennassuggestedthatthisnodemarkedashiftin"novelty"

Thenextnodeontheconcrescencewavehappenssixdays
beforetheshiftpointandagainrepresentsthesamekindof
accelerationin"novelty."Thefirsttrigramiscompletedatthe

Dynasty(9601127CE)seemedtounderstandtheconceptof
alchemicaltimeandthetransformativeprocessattheheartof
KingWen'sarrangement.Inacuriousmandalaentitled"The
Cauldron,Furnace,MedicinesandFiringProcess,"theKing
Wensequenceisusedtodescribethealchemicalprocess."The
scienceofthegoldpill(alchemy),"asLiuIming,theforemost
Taoistscholarofthe19thcentury,tellsusinhiscommentary
onthemandala,"hastheHeavenandtheEarthforitscauldron
andfurnace,WaterandFireforitsmedicinalingredientsthe
othersixtyhexagrams,beginningwithDifficultyand
Darkness,arethefiringprocess...Thescienceofthegoldpill
(alchemy)isnotoutsidethetaooftransformation,thetaoof
transformationisnotoutsidethetaoofevolutionofyinand
yang,ofheavenandearth,sunandmoon."[24]

Thisalchemicalmandala,withitscircleofsixtyhexagrams,is
theinformationallinkbetweeneasternandwesternsystemsof
divinationandmagicalphilosophy.Itsfourouterhexagrams
suggestthepatternoftheKabbalisticcross"Betweenthe
heights(heaven)andthedepths(Earth),betweenJustice(Fire)
andMercy(Water),Iamcentered"whilethecircleofsixty
hexagramsrepresentstheunionofthemicrocosm,5the
pentagram,andthemacrocosm,6thehexagram,[5x6=30,6
x6=36,5x12(6+6)=60,6x10(5+5)=60and12+60
=72]intheratioof5:6,or10:12.

Thisnumericalrelationshipcorrespondsinthedoublehelixof
DNAtothepointwherecountingbytripletsandturnsmerge.
Twotriplets,sixbasepairs,containahalfturnoftheDNA
helix,orfivebasepairs.Therefore,threewholeturns,orsix
halfturns,containstentriplets,30basepairsor60amino
acids,withinaframeworkof12triplets,36basepairsand72
aminoacids.Theseratios,5:6and10:12formacommon
periodwhereturns,structure,andinformation,triplets,
coincide,echoingtheoverlapbetweenmind,themicrocosm,

Boththe60hexagramcycleandthe64hexagramcycleare
relatedtotime.TheancientChinesecalendarwasbasedonthe
Chang,orMetoniccycleof19yearssolaryears.Thisthetime
periodinwhichthesunandmoongothroughtheir
permutationsbeforereturningtothestartingpoint.In
astrology,thisismarkedbytheheadandtailofthedragon,
markersusedtonotethemaineventoftheMetoniccycle,the
predictionofeclipses.Ifwedivideour60hexagramsoramino
acidsbythe19yearsofthecycle,wefindaclose
approximationofPi,3.15,ageometricmarkerofthecyclethat
isalsoreflectedinthestructureofDNA.Nineteenturns,
countedbytriplets,bringsustothe64thtriplet,completingthe
cycleofthecode.Nineteenturnsof64tripletsis192base
pairsand384aminoacids,thetotalnumberoflinesintheI
Ching.[26]

Ifwecountbylunaryearsof384days,13monthstimes29.6
daysor19daysmorethanthesolaryear,then64ofthese
"years"wouldmergetheeclipsecycle,theheadandtailofthe
dragon,withthesunspotcycle,containingthreemajorcycles
andsixminorones,whichechoesthethreeturnsandsixhalf
turnscreatedbytentriplets.Thistemporalunit,aswesaw
notedabove,istheincrementofchange,thewavefrontofthe
increasingnoveltyfactor,bywhichevolutionispaced.Itisno
accident,giventhelightsensitivenatureofDNAthateclipse
cycles,sunspotcyclesandtheinformationalstructureofDNA
shouldallbebasedonthesameratiosandproportions.

FromthiswecanseethatthestructureoftheIChingandthe
DNAcodecontainsbothlocalsolarsystemtimeorchestrated
bythepermutationsofsun,moon,eclipsesandsunspotcycles,
andthelargercyclesofprecessionaltime.Countingbyturns
andtripletsrevealsthatamacrocosmicframeworkof
precessionalnumberssupportsthemicrocosm.Themovement
ofthespringequinoxbackwardthroughthezodiacduetothe
tiltoftheearth'saxisismeasuredattherateofonedegree
every72years,therefore12triplets,1and1/5thturnsofthe
helixequals1/6ofadegreeofprecessionalmotion,or12
years.Giventhattherebillionsofturnsandmillionsoftriplets

thecoilsofDNAwithineverycellofyourbody,andtheycan

themselvesintheskinofthedragon,"thatis,onlybyinitiates
whohavelearnedtheGreenLanguageofLight.But,whilethe
IChingprovidesuswithanalphabetandawaytospellout
meaningful"words,"the64codonsitfailstoprovidea
grammarandsyntaxthatwouldallowustousethese"words"
insentencesandmetaphors,inotherwords,toturntheimages
intoadiscreteformofcommunication.

Forthatpieceofthepuzzle,wemustturntothewestern
mysterytraditionandamuchnewerpsychotechnology,the
TarotanditsGnosticandKabbalisticroots.

Whilekeepinginmindthatthelabel"Gnosticism"coversan
enormousnumberofdifferentandoftencontradictorybelief
systems,itispossibletosortthroughitsspiritualkaleidoscope
andarriveatanoverviewofthebasicgnosticcosmology.
Gnosticism'smaintenetscontainbothgoodandevilgods,a
dualismthatisoftentheoppositeofwhatwewouldusually
expect.Therealforcedrivinggnosticphilosophywasits
sophisticatedandexperientialvisionoftheEndoftheWorld.

Accordingtothegnosticmyth,atthecreationoftheworldthe
spiritofLightwasimprisonedbythepowersofDarkness.
Thislight,theessenceofGod,wastrappedinhumanbodiesas
separatesparksoflight,oursouls.Thegnosticsectsheldthat
thegoaloftheirknowledgewasthepathofreturn,orthe
abilityoftheindividualsparkstoreturntotheoriginalLight
throughtheprocessofredemption.AccordingtotheGnostics,
thisworld,anditshistory,aretheworksoftheevilDemiurge.
Thisisthefalsegod,ortheevilone,whobuiltthisworldasa
trapforsouls,orthelight.

Aseachsoulisredeemed,ittravelsbacktotheshattered
sourceofthedivineLight.Thesoulreturnsitsownsmallspark
oflighttothemainsource,whichslowly,asmoreandmore
soulsreturntoit,becomeswholeagain.Eventually,whenall
soulshavereturned,thephysicaluniverse,beingnow
completelywithoutLight,willend.Givenmodernbiology's
understandingofthelightemittingandinformationcarrying
abilityofDNA,andtheimplicationsforthekindof
hologramicrealitydescribedbytheGnostics,thensuch
eschatologyofLightgainsanewandmorescientificmeaning.
Thereforethis"eschatologyofLight"synthesizedfrom
Egyptian,PersianandHebrewelementscanbeseenasthe
frameworksupportingthevastdiversityofgnostictraditions.
ThesetraditionsincludedthenewmessianicformofJudaism
thatwouldbecomeChristianityacenturyorsolater.[29]

ThekeyconceptinthiseschatologyoflightistheTreeofLife,
EtzChaim,asdescribedintheworkofcreationtextssuchas
theSepherYetsirah.TheTreeofLifeisadiagramthatpictures
realityastheintersectionoffourgreatrealms,orlevelsof
abstraction.Ageometricpatterncrystallizeswithinthe
intersectionplaneslikeamoirpatterninahologramic
projection.Twentytwopaths,processesorstatesofbecoming
connecttenlocalities,spheresorsephiroth.Theentirediagram
wasthoughttodescribethenatureofcreation,God'sartistic
techniqueifyouwill.Butit'strueimportancetothesageswas
itsapplicationtothehumancondition.[30]

AsGodissupposedtohavemademaninhisimageand
likeness,thenmanwasthoughttocontain,inmicrocosm,the
entireTreeofLife.SomemedievalKabbalistsusedthe
conceptsintheSepherYetsirahtocreateanartificialformof
life,asintheGolemlegendsofPragueandWarsaw.Tothe
westernesotericists,theTreeofLifefunctionedmuchlikethe
KundalinidiagramsoftheHindumystics.Bymappingthe
internalpowercenters,andthenprojectingoutwardand
aligningthemwiththeforcesofnature,themagiciansoughtto
reenacttheprocessofcreation.Andsobecome,likeGod,a
cocreatoroftheuniverse.[31]

Thesephirothandthepathsarearrangedinafewbasic
patterns.Thetopthreelocalities,Kether,ChokmahandBinah,
(Crown,WisdomandUnderstanding)createatriangularmotif
thatistheninvertedandprojecteddownwardthroughthe
pattern.Thefirstinvertedtriangle,Chesed,Geburah,
Tiphareth,(Mercy,StrengthandBeauty)isrepeatedbythe
thirdandlasttriangle,Netzach,HodandYesod(Victory,
SplendorandFoundation).Thewholepatternisthenresolved
by,andenfoldedinto,thelastsephiroth,Malkuth(Kingdom).

Eachofthesetriangularpatternsrepresentsoneoftherealms
orlevelsofabstraction.Therepetitionofthepatternalso
createsthreecolumnsorpillarsontheTree.FacingtheTree,
thethreecolumnsareMercy,Transformation(notethiscolumn
connectsMalkuthwithKether,heaventoearth),andSeverity.
Theserepetitionsofthreecanalsobeseenasthethreepersons
ofthetrinity,thelawofthrees,orthesis,antithesisand
synthesistothemodernphilosopher.Theycanalsobeseenas
thetripletcodeattheheartoftransferRNA,whichcreates
proteinsaccordingtotheDNA'sblueprint,andthethreeturns
formedoftentriplets.

Indeed,thewholeTreeofLifepatternechoesthestructural
componentsofDNAanditsprocessesthatwefoundintheI
Ching.Thetenspheresarejoinedtogetherbytheserpentlike
entwiningofthe22paths,foratotalof32qualitiesandtheir
reflection,whichofcoursematchesthe64proteinsynthesis
codewordsoftRNA.The22lettersofthepathscorrespond
tothe20aminoacidsandthetwopunctuationmarksformed
bytRNA.Astheseareformedofwordsmadeofbasepairs,
wemightthinkofthemaspossiblesentencestructures,or
varietiesofsyntax,thatallowforthe"metaphor"ofaphysical
bodytobe"written"orconstructed.Eventhe23chromosomes
thateachindividualpassesoninreproductioncanbeseenas
the22pathsoftheTree,withtheadditionoftheMalkuth,or
earthelement,thatcreatesbothgenderandindividuality.In
essence,theKabbalahandtheTreeOfLifeareelegantand
symbolicwaystoexpressthepatternsfoundintheDNA.Itis
thereforenowonderthatitwasthoughtcapableofbestowing
lifeoninanimateclayasintheGolemlegends.

Understandingofthiscombinationofmythicmathematicsand
DNAgeometryalmostdisappearedwithfalloftheancient
world.Itsurvivedinfragments,andinthequotationsofthe
ancients,untilanalmostunknownEnglishscholarnamed

studentofBuckminsterFuller's,"theCanonisbasedonthe
objectivefactthateventsandphysicalchangeswhichare
perpetualareneverthelesscompletelygovernedbyintrinsic
proportions,periodicitiesandmeasures."AsCritchlownotes,
"itistojustsuchahiddenintrinsiclanguagethattheauthorof
thisbook(Stirling)hasdedicatedhimself."[33]
InhischapteronRhetoric,oneoftheliberalartssurrounding
AlchemyonthebaseofNotreDame'smiddlepillar,Stirling
givesusasimpledescriptionoftheGreatTreeofLife:"The
processofcreationmaybeexpressedbyinscribingthe
cabalisticdiagramintheupperhemisphere,sothattheapexor
crownreachestotheMilkyWay,whilethetenthstepwill
coincidewithearth."Stirling's"cabalisticdiagram"istheten
steppatternofunfoldmentknowntooccultistsastheTreeof
Life,andaccordingtohisexplication,itisthebasicpatternof
theCanonitself.

geometricdiagram,inwhichtenstepsweregroupedaccording
toaprogressivescheme,sothattheemanationsoftheSpiritof

reminiscentoftheintersectionofmindandmatter,information
andstructure,thatistheDNAcode.

Stirlingtellsusthat"theideaswhichtheancientsconnected
andcombinedintothisfigureoftenprogressivesteps,appears
toformthebasisofalltheirphilosophy,religion,andart,and
initwehavethenearestapproachtoadirectrevelationofthe
traditionalscience,orGnosis,whichwasnevercommunicated
exceptbymythsandsymbols."Fromthiswecanseethatthe
framework,theGnosticpattern,behindtheuniversallanguage
ofsymbolism,theLanguageoftheBirdsandtheGreen
Language,isthisgreatword/worldtreeofDNAgeometry.It

GreenLanguage,letusreturntoFulcanelliandhismostdirect

themithrabhasthegeometricpatternoftheTreeofLife,
withoutMalkuth,inscribedinitsniche.Thisisusuallycoupled
withtheLightVersefromtheQu'ranSura24,verse35.To
theSufis,thisverseexemplifiestheveryideaofillumination.
IdriesShahcalledtheverse"theessenceofSufism,"andgoes
ontosuggeststhatit"concealsthenatureofthecognitionof
theextradimensionsofthehumanconsciousnesswhichcomes
beyondtheintellect."

conceptswiththeevendeepermeaningofadoortotheDuat
fromEgyptiancosmology.Ithasthreelayers,asdoesthe

JeremyNarby,inhisbookTheCosmicSerpent,describes
DNAas"livinginwaterandemittingphotons,likeanaquatic
dragonspittingfire."[35]Thiscertainlymatchestheimageof
thetwohexagramswecanmakefromthepatternonthe
credence,andsuggeststhattheIChingandtheDNAlight
languagemightbethesamething,thesame"text."
Researchers,suchasRattemeyer,PoppandHo,considerthis
biophotonemissionandabsorptionasakindof"bio
communicationbetweencellsandorganisms,"andtheirwork
overthelast15yearssuggestthatthislanguageisusednot
merelyonthecellularlevelbutalsoasacommunicationand
