Transfers irk Chief Mwenichifungwe

C HIEF Mwenichifungwe
of the Fungwe people of
Mafinga District in has

of government workers seeking
transfers from the district few
years after being employed as
civil servants.

Sichone met traditional leaders at
Chief Kafwimbi's palace before
gracing this year's Ng'ondo
traditional ceremony of the Iwa-
Namwanga people of Isoka
district.
Chief Mwenichifungwe said the
high transfer rate of government
workers in Mafinga District was
affecting the local government's
operations in the area.
He told Sichone that service
delivery in Mafinga District was
being hampered as a result of
civil servants moving away from
the district.
Chief Mwenichifungwe noted
that Mafinga was being used as
an entry point into civil service
by many people who later ask for
transfers to other districts and
provinces when employed.
According to Chief
Mwenichifungwe, at some point,
over 100 teachers were
transferred from Mafinga to other
districts and provinces after
serving for only few years in the
area.
He asked government to halt the
transfers from Mafinga District
without valid reasons adding that
traditional leaders should also be
consulted when transferring
government workers from area.
Sichone pledged to make a
follow-up on the matter and also
promised to inform traditional
leaders in the area whenever key
people were being transferred
from the districts.
Ng'ondo is a traditional and
cultural ceremony celebrated by
the Iwa-Namwanga of Chief
Kafwimbi in Isoka District of
Muchinga Province.
According to Chief Kafwimbi,
Ng'ondo is an important and
annual event in the history and
life of the Iwa Namwanga
people because it reflects their
values, wishes, aspirations and
cultural heritage.

Kambandu.
Kambandu noted that there
were numerous investors and
financiers in the country eager
to invest in viable innovative
business concepts, but that
many entrepreneurs grapple
to successfully find the right
investor for their specific
business model, or did not
pitch their business to its best
potential.
Kambandu further noted that
too often entrepreneurs
approached a financier
without reviewing their
funding requirements and
establishing whether they
were in fact the best fit for
their business.
For instance, an
entrepreneur often just adjusts
the application in order to fall
w i t h i n c r i t e r i a
communicated. This
immediately places doubt in
an investor's mind as it
becomes evident that the
entrepreneur hasn't fully
planned how this funding will
be utilised in the business to
address the authentic funding
needs, said Kambandu.
According to Kambandu,
there were four key
components in a business
pitch that investors tend to
look out for; what the money
is needed for; whether it is a
short-term or long-term need;
what the owner can give up or
provide for the capital; and
lastly, what rate of return can
be expected from the success
of the business.
Kambandu added: An
entrepreneur should highlight
in a pitch to an investor.
Firstly, where is the business
now? This provides the
investor the opportunity to see
your background and
business experience of both
the entrepreneur and support
team, as well as the current
health of the business.
The next point is what the
business; how unique is it
compared to competitors; is
there a demonstrated need for
the product or service; and is
there sufficient market
potential to make the
investment worthwhile?
Lastly, the entrepreneur
should explain the purpose of
the funding applied for (to
start, expand, restructure,
etc.). Investors need a clear,
quantified idea of what the
money will be used for, as
well as realistic financial
projections which indicate
that the business veers
towards being cash-flow-
positive. The investors
thinking is around whether
they can make the best return
on the investment within the
agreed upon time frames a
clear exit strategy.
Kambandu warned
entrepreneurs against falling
into the trap of including too
much detail during the
business pitch.
Often entrepreneurs become
so caught up in their passion
for their business, that the
pitch becomes littered with
too much technical
information which can
disinterest the investor. Such
pitch. The pitch presentation
should always remain concise
and contain only the essential
elements, said Kambandu.
He also advised entrepreneurs
to conduct thorough research
on each individual funder
before meeting them to ensure
that the business matches the
specific criteria of the
investor, speaks to their
investment preferences and
that the proposed funding
agreement ensures a fair deal
for both the entrepreneur and
investor.
Such research will improve
the chances of a successful
application for finance. Each
investor or financier will have
a precise idea of the type of
business or idea that would
attract their interest. It is
therefore imperative that
entrepreneurs tap into this and
play the right field to ensure
a successful application for
finance. Investors do not only
invest their time and money
into a business, they also
invest in the entrepreneur
behind the business and it is
for this reason that the
partnership between the two
parties should be a good
match, said Kambandu.

and how they seek competitive advantage.
Internet has become so wide spread in Zambia and very few businesses are
taking advantage of this. It now can be accessed through mobile phones and
a good number of Zambians have mobile phones that can access internet.
This adaptation of the use of internet to conduct business is known as
Electronic Business or E-business. Sometimes the term e-commerce is used
interchangeably with e-business, however, e-commerce refers to the process
of buying and selling online, while e-business is a broader term used to
describe a range of electronic activities.
E-business is now synonymous with the Internet. Users private or corporate
can communicate with web-based online stores using a web browser such
as Microsoft Explorer or Netscape Communicator. An Internet store provides
all the facilities a customer needs, including a product catalogue, a virtual
shopping basket, and a secure credit card payment system.
The Internet has no geographical, political or temporal boundaries. It has a
common infrastructure available to all. The universal availability of access to
the Internet, while not radically changing logical processes, has created new
opportunities and removed some of the physical limitations of traditional
methods of conducting business.
E-COMMERCE
E-commerce can be simply defined as conducting business transactions over

The SADC Lawyers Association
has learnt with cautious

profession in the SADC region,

Z IMBABWE'S President
Robert Mugabe showed
no signs of loosening his
iron grip on power Friday as he
appeared in public for the first
time since the military
apparently took control this
week.
Clad in blue and yellow
academic robes with a cap, the
93-year-old leader presided
over and delivered a speech at a
university graduation ceremony
in the country's capital, Harare.
Zimbabwe's military told the
state-owned Herald newspaper
on Friday that it is "engaging
with the commander-in-chief
President Robert Mugabe on the
way forward and will advise the
nation of the outcome as soon as
possible."
The military added that
"significant progress has been
made in their operation to weed
out criminals around President
Mugabe." Those sought had
been "committing crimes that
were causing social and
economic suffering in
Zimbabwe." Some have been
arrested while others remained
at large, the military told the
newspaper.
Life seemed to carry on as usual
in downtown Harare, with the
exception of increased military
presence. Residents there told
ABC News that businesses
were open and the streets were
calm, though soldiers were
stationed in certain areas and
tanks blocked some roads on the
outskirts of the city center.
An American citizen, who lives
in Harare and spoke to ABC
News on condition of
anonymity, said she still feels
safe in her neighborhood. In
fact, she discerns an overall
sense of "subdued excitement"
from Zimbabweans and other
residents about the potential
military intervention, she said.
"If you mention this to anyone
in passing, there's a smile that
creeps on their face and a little
giggling maybe too," she told
ABC News in a telephone
interview Thursday night.
"People are hopeful that finally,
after all these years, Mugabe
will be at the end of his reign."
The first signs of a military
takeover emerged Tuesday as
armored vehicles were
deployed near the capital, one
week after Mugabe fired his
deputy and longtime ally, Vice
President Emmerson

of scheming to take power,

of two bore holes in Kabwe's
Makululu Township recently,
Nelson commended
Zambians for their culture of
hospitality and the spirit of
helping one another.

here in Kabwe. I feel
privileged to witness the
wonderful work Habitat for
Humanity Zambia is doing in
partnership with the water
committees and the local
authorities in support of the
Makululu community, said
Nelson. This is my first time
in the country and I must
confess that the little I have
seen of Zambia is beautiful.
The people as I notice are your
greatest asset. It is indeed
lovely to witness your culture
of hospitality. I have even had
an opportunity to taste some of
your traditional foods.
Nelson explained that his team
was in Zambia to gain a
greater appreciation of the
work Zambians were doing in
improving the living
conditions of the most
vulnerable.
With this knowledge and our
experience of the programs,
we hope to inspire more
financial support with our
affiliate partners in the United
States, Nelson told Kabwe
residents. We had a privilege
of meeting with your Mayor
who gave us an amazing
audience; we also met with
Habitat Zambia's local
partners and some of the
beneficiary families. We
walked away with proof of
how housing solutions that
Habitat brings can truly
change lives, and this was
really inspiring.
Nelson said Habitat
International had developed
an advocacy programme
which focused on policies,
systems, practices and
behaviours that could yield
more pro-poor support in the
fight against poverty housing,
land rights and security of
tenure.
He said it was gratifying to see
that Habitat for Humanity
Zambia's advocacy and
lobbying work had enhanced
community capacity levels,
while developing workable
relationships with the local
authorities, particularly in
Kabwe.
We hope this will reap more
progressive support for our
target support groups. Our
gathering here is another
example of how Habitat for
Humanity is uplifting the lives
of vulnerable groups in
society, said Nelson. Water
is a basic right and access to
safe, clean water and
sanitation by everyone should
be our target. I am certain that
the two boreholes will add
immense quality to the lives of
the local residents.
Nelson commended the
partnership between Habitat
for Humanity Zambia and the
local authorities in Kabwe
adding that the relationship
should continue to flourish.
We at the international level
will endeavour to provide as
much support as we can to
Habitat Zambia. Na totela

secretary Chanda Kabwe said
Makululu Township was the
largest slum in Zambia adding
that the township could not
escape the predicament of
inadequate sanitation
facilities.
There are limited water
points and sanitation facilities.
Indeed it is sad that our
brothers and sisters are living
in such conditions as water is a
basic right, said Kabwe.
Kabwe told the Habitat
International team that,
according to the 2013/2014
Zambia health demographic
survey, about 35 per cent of
households in Zambia did not
have access to safe drinking
water sources (borehole-
piped, borehole-pump, piped
water, or protected well).
In addition, 75 per cent of
households do not have an
improved toilet facility that is
not shared with other
households. Households in
urban areas have greater
access to an improved source
of drinking water than
households in rural areas
(90% versus 47%), said
Kabwe. The good news is
that government is aware of
this situation and is eager to
arrest the situation. This is the
reason why access to clean,
safe water and sanitation has
been prioritised in the Seventh
National Development Plan.
He said during the period 2017
to 2021, priority would be
placed on investments in
water supply and sanitation
services and its management
adding that focus would also
be on addressing water-related
hazards; promotion of
resilience of water and
sanitation; infrastructure
development and
construction; rehabilitation
and retro-fitting.

combined with poor hygiene
is linked to skin diseases,
acute respiratory infections
and diarrheal diseases. This
also affects families as
caregivers will have to stay at
home to take care of patients,
which means time away from
their jobs, thereby forfeiting
precious income.
Kabwe said government was
committed to making the lives
of the local people better
through public-private
partnerships and the
community.
Kabwe implored other
organisations to emulate
Habitat for Humanity
Zambia's efforts of uplifting
the livelihood of the
vulnerable people in the
society.

leading cause of child
mortality in Zambia.
Tragically, these deaths could
be prevented through clean
water. Children are our future,
we need to protect them, said
Mukelabai. Habitat for
Humanity Zambia appreciates
government's commitment to
this noble cause. We are
poised to drill more boreholes
in the township and I only
hope the community will
continue supporting our
e ff o r t s . We b e l i e v e i n
participatory development in
transforming communities.
He disclosed that the
commissioned boreholes cost
K 44,000, saying the two
boreholes would serve close to
1000 individuals in the area.

has claimed his life was

Doping closed its 14-month
investigation into the package
after being unable to find
sufficient evidence it
contained a banned substance.

culture, media and sport select
committee, warned Wiggins
the decision was not an
exoneration of anyone.
Referring to a Ukad statement
saying its investigation had
been hampered by a lack of
detailed medical records, he
said: If Sky and British
Cycling had kept proper
medical records, this could
have been wrapped up a lot
sooner. It is unacceptable. A
cloud now hangs over one of
our greatest Olympians.
Collins also said he would be
publishing a select committee
before Christmas.
Wiggins denied he had
committed any wrongdoing
and turned his fire on Ukad for
not declaring him completely
innocent after closing its case.

And Society Development

S PORT is a valuable extra

curricular activity as it
provides one with
abundant and wide range of
opportunities to succeed.
World over, the young people
involve themselves in sport for a
number of reasons but
predominantly their fitness,
which is essential for one to lead
a healthy life. Sport also has an
exceptional ability to shape
people into responsible members
of society, as it enables them to
stay away from mind wrecking
activities such as drinking beer,
smoking and other illicit vices
which could hinder their
progress.
There are many times when Non-
Governmental Organisations
(NGOs) and other stakeholders
only focus on other cognizable
things as vital ways to curb the
challenges that affect young
people and their quest to bring
development but they neglect the
easier and feasible solution,
sport.
Memory Phiri was once a young
player at Munali, she is now a
medical student at Southwestern
University, Oklahoma. Sport is
the life changing tool that
allowed Memory to undertake
this opportunity. Besides
studying, Memory also plays for
the Bulldogs in the United States
and truly believes that sport can
help many other youths find
similar levels of success. She
says if young people should
whole-heartedly take part in
sporting activities, there will be a
reduction in cases of drug,
alcohol abuse and early
pregnancies because it allows
young people to be part of
something greater and give them
a focus.
Challenges that affect young
people can be eliminated through
the much needed investment in
all sport disciplines namely
football, basketball, netball,
rugby, golf, volleyball, among
other sports.
Over the years, we have not seen
equal distribution of resources
for development of sport. Little
or no attention is paid to some
sports such as hockey, netball,
volleyball, just to mention but a
few. Many times it is football that
wins the limelight and huge
support.And this is
disadvantageous to people who
are good at a certain disregarded
sport.
Sport can be a mode of advocacy
for human rights particularly
children's rights as it is an easier
way to attract the attention of the
masses.
Therefore, there is need for
proper development of sport in
order to change the lives of young
people and the wider community
for the better. A wholesome
approach to sports development
is what is needed.
