Dear Mr. Sorenson,

I read with interest your recent interview in which you discussed Airbnb and noted previous
correspondence between our companies, saying:

Ive had letters from Airbnb directly, demanding my response about some charge, I
dont even know what it is, within hours. Thats pretty aggressive, and Im not going to
respond to that.

While I was disappointed to learn that you are unlikely to respond to this letter, I was not
surprised that you are unwilling and unable to defend your industrys longstanding
commitment to price gouging consumers, depressing wages and replacing workers with
robots.

Last week, we released a new report highlighting your industrys habit of taking billions of
dollars from taxpayers to subsidize the construction and operation of your hotels. The report
finds that Marriott received $1.73 billion in taxpayer subsidies between 2008 and 2017. From
2008-2016, you have generated $4.6 billion in profits.

While you may be unwilling to discuss this matter with me, I do hope you will tell American
taxpayers more about these practices. The men and women who have helped subsidize your
business, along with the nearly $12.3 million you personally earned in 2016, deserve an
explanation.

I hope you will also take the time to explain why an association to which your hotels belong
has chosen to launch a series of misleading advertisements regarding safety and security. As
you undoubtedly know, many of your hotels have been magnets for bad actors. At Airbnb, we
take safety seriously. While no background check system is infallible, we run background
checks on US-based hosts and guests. We also use advanced technology and machine
learning to assess reservations ahead of time for risk. Do your hotels do the same? If not, why
not?

Sincerely,

Josh Meltzer
