Citys environmental consultant recommends additional
Body of Press Release:
groundwater testing near South Street site

FORT MYERS, FL (Nov. 20, 2017) GFA International, the environmental consultant for the City of Fort
Myers, has performed the initial collection of groundwater samples at six onsite monitor wells at the
City-owned property at 3348 South St. in Fort Myers. GFA collected the groundwater samples and has
sent the samples to the laboratory for testing. They have received partial test results on the
groundwater samples which, at this time, are inconclusive. Therefore, GFA International is
recommending and requesting permission to install four offsite monitor wells, as shown on the
attached map, which should allow them to better interpret the partial test results. GFA will collect and
test groundwater samples from the four new offsite monitor wells and a second collection of the six
onsite monitor wells.

GFA anticipated delivering the initial groundwater and soil test results by mid-October 2017. Flooding
from Hurricane Harvey at the end of August 2017 and the effects of Hurricane Irma during September
2017 made the site inaccessible and delayed the collection of samples. GFA currently anticipates
delivering the initial groundwater and soil test results during January 2018. After these results are
received, additional soil borings and toxicology evaluation will still be needed before a final site
assessment report can be issued.

The South Street environmental site assessment is a collaborative effort between the City and the
FDEP. The City is submitting GFAs recommendation to FDEP for their review.

Earlier this year, GFA prepared a plan for site testing, which was submitted for approval by FDEP. Since
that time, the City hosted a public information workshop and collected public input for a two-week
period. After reviewing public comments, GFA International refined the plan and re-submitted to and
received FDEP approval before testing began. Once the extent of the potential contamination is
evaluated, the City will solicit further public input to review potential physical remediation options and
determine potential future uses for the site.
