Terrible aspect of flood in Bangladesh, Aftermaths of flood, Blessings of flood, Relief
measures and controlling, Means to control, Conclusion.

Introduction:- Flood is a natural calamity that visits Bangladesh every year. During the
summer and rainy seasons the water of the rivers rises so high that it overflows the bank
and the surrounding areas go under water. This sudden rise of water is called flood.

Causes of flood:- Flood is mainly caused by heavy showers of rain during the rainy
season. Rivers and canals cannot hold the water of rains and the water overflows the banks
which causes flood. A river may overflow its banks if its bed is silted or its course is too
zigzag to allow free flow of water. In hilly regions floods may occur as a result of heavy
down flow of water on account of melting of snow on mountains. Again, catastrophic flood
may be caused by cyclones and tidal bores in the seas.

Terrible aspect of flood in Bangladesh:- Flood is a regular terror to our country which
leaves behind a trail of ruins. It causes havoc to lives and properties. The granaries of the
house holders are destroyed. The crop fields look like vast sheets of water. Cattle and even
human beings are killed, houses are destroyed. The crop fields look like vast sheets of
water. Cattle and even human beings are killed, houses are destroyed. People have to stay
under the open sky. All communication with the outside world is cut off. They cannot meet
the bare necessities for existence. Hence, the sufferings of the people know no bounds. To
add to the misery, it leaves behind wide spread damages of crops and epidemic diseases.

Aftermaths of flood:- After subsiding, flood leaves behind devastated land and crop-fields,
epidemic diseases and scarcity not only of food but also of pure drinking water. Wide-
spread damage of crops results in famine. A large number of men and animals die of
starvation as well as diseases. To add to the sufferings the prices of all daily necessities
increase by leaps and bounds. In fact, the after effects of flood are more terrible. Among the
recent floods, the floods of 1984 and 1987 caused a huge loss to life and property. But the
flood of 1988 has broken the previous records of losses. About ninety percent areas were
under water for several days and it caused a great harm. The flood in 1998 is also an
example of the most terrible floods in recent years.
Blessings of flood:- Floods in an agricultural country like ours have often been looked
upon as a blessing in disguise. Floods leave on the submerged areas a rich alluvial deposit
that greatly increases the fertility of soil. Besides, it also washes away the garbage that
accumulates on the surface of the earth.

Relief measures and controlling:- During flood, people come forward to help the
sufferers. They are given shelter in the houses of their fortunate fellow-men or public
places. There, they are clothed and fed by charitable people, different organizations and the
government. Loans are granted to enable them to take up their work of life again. Many
other countries in the world also extend their helping hands for survival of the distressed
people.

Means to control:- A definite scheme should be adopted to prevent flood permanently.

Proper dams and embankments should be constructed so that the water of the rivers
cannot rise above the danger level. Obstacles to natural flow of water should be removed.
The silted-up beds of the river have to be excavated for carrying more water.

Conclusion:- Due to her geographical position, Bangladesh is very much prone to floods.
Unless this catastrophe is checked, our development is impossible. Therefore, we should
find out a permanent solution to control floods to ensure our development.

The Floods of Bangladesh

submerging a vast area of land is called flood. It is a natural calamity. It is sometimes called
deluge. It is devastating and horrible when causes a colossal loss to lives and properties.
Bangladesh, being a land of rivers, often falls victims to floods almost every year.

Causes: Floods causes of various reason. Excessive and continued heavy rainfall is the main
cause of flood in our country. When there is heavy rain for a number of days the rivers cannot
hold and carry down so much water to the sea. As a result, the water overflows the bank of rivers
and submerges a vast area of land. Sometimes heavy rushed of water running down from the
mountains gives rise to spate in the rivers. Again, melting of snow in the mountains and tidal
bore of the sea create flood. Recently the sudden release of water from the Farakka barrage at the
upper during rainy season overflows rivers and floods the country.

Merits: Floods do immense good to us. They make our soil alluvial and fertile. As such our soil
becomes suitable for growing more and better crops. They wash away all sorts of rubbishes and
purify the surface of the earth.

Bad effects of floods: In spite of doing good floods often bring untold miseries to our country by
damaging our crops and properties. It also disrupts the communication network and causes
untold miseries of our people. Thousands of people become homeless, helpless and suffer greatly
for want of shelter, food and many other things.

After effect: Famine and pestilence break out in the wake of floods as there is acute scarcity of
food and pure drinking water. People often drink dirty water as a result of which epidemics break
out in the shape of cholera, diarrhea, dysentery etc. The price of all daily necessaries goes up.

Some notable floods: The floods that took place in 1954, 1961, 1968, 1974, 1985, 1988, 1998,
created much havoc. But havoc created by most devastating flood of 1988 beggars description. It
surpassed all the previous records of losses and distresses.

Flood control measures: Firstly, by building dams and embankments across the rivers floods
may be brought under control. Secondly, by dredging the river beds from time to time and
thereby depending the rivers occasional flood may be controlled to some extent. It is
encouraging to note that the government of Bangladesh is fully aware of it and has already taken
several measures to control floods in the country.

Conclusion: Ours is an agricultural country. Our national economy and the prosperity of our
people largely depend on agriculture. So, the government of Bangladesh should take both short-
term and long-term measures to control floods so that they may not cause the damage of our
crops, cattle, houses and properties.

The wonders and blessings or modern science
Introduction: The age we live in is an age of science indeed. Wherever we look-land, water and air
we can see the gifts or blessings of science. Science has made our life easy and comfortable.
Everywhere we can see the glorification of science.

Wonders of science: Science, in its rapid progress, goes on creating wonder after wonder. In fact, the
wonders of modern science are too many to describe here.

Electricity is the first wonder of modern science. It is a great source of power and energy. It has
brought about a great change in mans life. Modern civilization is unconcealed without electricity.
Mobile or Telephone is another wonder of modern science. It helps a man to talk with any one sitting
in any corner of the wonder. Wireless or radio is another great wonder of modern science. It has
made us possible to hear the human voice from any part of the world. Another one of the greatest
wonder of the modern science is Television. It enables us to see and enjoy events, scenes, plays or
any other thing sitting in our drawing room thousands of miles away.

Again, the invention of radar is another wonder of modern science. It helps us to detect the
advancement of ships, planes and the likes. Recently the invention of Rocket is also a wonder of
science. It has made space travel easy. With its helps today man can fly anywhere even to a moon.
Nuclear energy is, perhaps, the most wonderful of all the achievements of modern science. It has
made possible in making atom bomb, hydrogen bomb and the missiles.

Besides these, Computer, internet, X-rays, ECG, Radio Therapy etc are the wonders of modern
science too.

Its uses: The uses of modern science can be seen and felt in everyday life and everywhere in the
world. In mills and factories, industries, agricultural, medical, transport communication everywhere
we can see the uses of modern science. Modern civilization would come to a standstill it there was
no electricity. Life would face its extreme crises if the modern amenities of life are neglected.
Agricultural and industrial development has been possible because of modern science. In fact we
cannot live or do without science.

Abuses: Nothing is of unmixed blessing. By the invention of Atom bomb, hydrogen bomb, missiles,
explosives men may efface the human race and its beautiful creation in the world. Atom bomb used
in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War II has buried the 2 populous and prosperous cities of Japan
in no time. The use of Hydrogen bomb may bring the total destruction of a country and a nation in t
he twinkle of an eye.

Conclusion: In fact, we hardly know much we owe to science in the daily affairs of our life. Life
without modern science cannot be conceived today. Modern science is like Aladdins lamp. It does
not what was supposed to be impossible yesterday. Where it will end nobody can say, but this much
can be impossible yesterday. Where it will end nobody can say, but this much can be said that it will
go on working and creating much more wonders in the days to come.

Discipline

the rules which regulate human activities and conduct are called discipline. It makes a man obey the
rules and mould his life according to the prevailing law and order.

Value of Discipline: The value of discipline is obvious is every walk of life. It regulates human conduct
and prevents him from doing whatever he likes. It strengthens law and order in society. In order to
keep peace and tranquility in the society discipline is must. It is the basis of all other virtue. For want
of discipline a home cannot be a real home, a society cannot be a peaceful society, and a nation
cannot be a strong and progressive one.

moon, the stars, and the planets of the universe follow discipline strictly. Any breach of discipline
here will bring about the total annihilation of the universe.

Necessity of discipline in different fields of life: Discipline is very important in every sphere of life. An
army without discipline is a rabble. A society bereft of discipline is likely to plunge into chaos and
anarchy. If the players in the playground do not obey the rules of the game and the order of the
captain they are sure to lose the game. By observing discipline strictly the players can reach the
higher of their glory. Discipline is absolutely necessary in strictly the players can reach the height of
their glory. Discipline is absolutely necessary in schools, colleges, and other educational institutions.
No educational institutions can run and do well without discipline. Similarly, the students cannot
learn anything good if they do not obey the rules of their institutions. Educational institutions are the
best places to infuse the idea of discipline into the minds of students. A family without discipline is
sure to suffer chaos and unhappiness. In different walks of our life we also find the necessity of
discipline. For example, when we go to a market or to shop to by things or to a railway station to buy
tickets, we often see large crowds. In such a situation, if everyone tries to get his thing first, there will
surely be chaos and no one will get what he wants. If, on the other hand, they form a queue each of
them will get his things without trouble.

Conclusion: Discipline is the root of all other virtues in our life. It is the secret of success. Life without
it is like a ship without a rudder. Without it our life will be at hazards. Life which is not consistent with
discipline is sure to ruin. So, all of us should be the staunch performer of discipline from the very
beginning of life.
