ABSTRACT

This research looked into the use of CourseSites in teaching L2 writing among
semester 1 Diploma in Teaching as a Second Language (TESL) students in Kolej
Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (KUPTM). It was a research on the use of CourseSites in
giving online feedback and its impact on students writing performance, students
attitude towards online feedback and the challenges that they faced when using
CourseSites in L2 writing course. The sample was fifty (50) Diploma in TESL
students which was divided into the control group and the experimental group. Two
instruments were utilised in this research which were pretest and posttest and
questionnaire. The data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences
(SPSS) version 22.0. Based on the findings, there was a significant difference in the
gain scores of the writing performance between control and experimental group.
Moreover, that there was a significant difference within the group for both the control
group and the experimental group. The students in the experimental groups had
positive attitude towards online feedback via CourseSites. The findings also showed
that these students did not face much challenges and problems when using
CourseSites. The findings of this research suggest that receiving online feedback via
CourseSites can be an alternative strategy in improving students writing performance.
Students enjoy the use of CourseSites in L2 writing course because they can
participate anytime and anywhere they want. Besides, the use of CourseSites promotes
autonomous learning as students are to an extent responsible for their desired learning
pace.
ABSTRAK

Penyelidikan ini mengkaji penggunaan CourseSites dalam pegajaran penulisan dalam


bahasa kedua di kalangan pelajar semester 1 Diploma Pengajaran Bahasa Inggeris
(TESL) di Kolej-Universiti Poly-Tech MARA (KUPTM). Ini merupakan kajian
penyelidikan tentang penggunaan CourseSites dalam memberi maklum balas melalui
atas talian dan kesannya terhadap prestasi penulisan pelajar, atitud pelajar terhadap
maklum balas atas talian dan cabaran-cabaran yang mereka hadapi ketika
menggunakan CourseSites di dalam kursus penulisan dalam bahasa kedua. Sampel
kajian adalah lima puluh (50) orang pelajar Diploma TESL yang dibahagikan kepada
kumpulan kawalan dan kumpulan eksperimen. Dua instrumen telah digunakan dalam
penyelidikan ini iaitu ujian pra dan post serta soal selidik. Data yang dikumpul telah
dianalisis dengan menggunakan perisian Statistical Package for Social Sciences versi
22.0. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan dalam
nilai kenaikan bagi prestasi penulisan pelajar di antara kumpulan kawalan dan
kumoulan eksperimen. Tambahan pula, terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan di dalam
kumpulan bagi kumpulan kawalan dan eksperimen. Pelajar-pelajar dari kumpulan
eksperimen menunjukkan menunjukkan atitud yang positif terhadap maklum balas
dalam talian melalui CourseSites. Hasil kajian turut mendapati bahawa pelajar-pelajar
ini tidak menghadapi banyak cabaran dan masalah ketika menggunakan CourseSites.
Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa menerima maklum balas dalam talian melalui
CourseSites boleh menjadi satu strategi alternatif dalam meningkatakan prestasi
penulisan pelajar. Pelajar berasa seronok ketika menggunakan CourseSites dalam
kursus penulisan dalam bahasa kedua kerana mereka dapat melibatkan diri pada bila-
bila masa dan di mana sahaja yang mereka inginkan. Di samping itu, penggunaan
CourseSites juga menggalakkan pembelajaran secara sendiri kerana pelajar
bertanggungjawab dalam menentukan rentak pembelajaran yang mereka mahukan.
