FINAL YEAR PROJECT

Design and Analysis of Solid State Welded Specimen
The purpose of that project was to join and analyze Solid State Welded joints of similar as well as
dissimilar metals. Solid State Welding was performed in workshop lab of our department in the university
on lathe machine and also on Vertical Milling Machine through Continuous drive Mechanism which is driven
by an energy source such as an electric motor running at Constant Speed and the rate of energy remained
constant as long as the weld is concerned. In that work Aluminum alloy in 1100 Series rods are used as a
specimen material having diameter of 10mm to 12mm and design parameters are Spindle Rotational
Speed was 4000 RPM Friction Time was 10 sec, Forging Pressure was 5-25 Mpa and Forging Time was 20
sec. From the experimental results, it was inferred that Solid-State Welding is superior to fusion welding
specially for joining dissimilar metals. Our work was particularly Rotary friction welding type of solid state
welding; When Specimen is welded then with the help of destructive testing we came to know ultimate
tensile strength, compression, fatigue strength, impact strength and hardness. it was a research based
project. At the end finite element Analysis (FEM) of welded specimen was done in ANSYS Software, by
simulation these results were compared to experimental results. The application of rotary type solid state
welding can be found in petroleum and gas industry where large pipes are welded using this welding
process.
