Master Switch
The Train Radio Dispatch System is one of the key components in the modern day
Communications Control Centre for the Railway.

The Master Switch is the hear


t of the Train Dispatch System custom-build for the
Indonesian Railway.

Each Train Dispatch Operator is equipped with a console and computer keypad and
display (TDSC). The operator can select one or more sectors of track for operation by
selection from either the control panel or the computer keyboard. The operator
consoles and displays are all connected to the Master Switch via a Local Area
Network and audio is routed to the appropriate consoles using VoIP techniques.
Audio is routed to the selected section of track via the Audio Multiplexer. Call set up
signalling and audio is passed to the 4-wire omnibus circuit via the Line Interface -
signalling card for each sector. All basestations on a sector are linked serially by a
4-wire audio circuit and all basestations transmit along the track simultaneously.
When a Locomotive or Waystation transmit only the strongest received signal from
the nearest basestation receiver is passed back to the Train Dispatch System
Console.

Call setup between Locomotives, Waystations and frain Dispatchers is controlled by


proprietary Train Dispatch Protocol preventing unauthorized calls or simultaneous
garbled calls on any sector of operation.

A Dual Master Switch provides full immunity against processor failure. Master Switch
1 and the fully redundant Master Switch 2 provide separate processors for Data,
Audio and Timing functions.

Failure of individual or multiple processors will not compromise the operation of the
Dispatch System and ensures console operators have constant communications with
the locomotive drivers and waystations.

The Audio Multiplex and line signalling elements of the switch are not redundant,
each sector of operation has its own discrete FFSK signalling and Line Interface
Printed Circuit Boards.

Functions of the Train Dispatch System Master Switch:

@ Enables Train Dispatch System Consoles (TDSC) or the Chief Train Dispatch
System (CTDSC) to select one or more sectors and routes sector audio to that
console also known as conferencing.

@ Routes audio to the Voice Recorder.

@ Provides the database (Locomotive IDs, etc.) and call logging for each console.

@ Buffers all audio and signalling to and from line.

Interface Cards

Audio and signalling data from each TDSC panel and CTDSC panel is interfaced via
an RS-232 circuit to its associated computer for each position. Each of these
computers is connected via an ethernet interface to a Local Area Network (LAN). In
addition to the TDSC and CTDSC computers the following are also connected to the
LAN:

Voice/Data Server
DSP 1 and DSP 2 processor boards
Maintenance Terminal.

system. The call processing for all TDSCs processed within the data server and all
call logs for all sectors are stored here.

DSP 1 Processor Board and its associated CPU and Audio Board process up to 4
sectors of operation. Four line inputs and four line outputs are multiplexed into
TDMA time slots and directed to the appropriate console following selection.

An additional DSP Processor board (DSP 2) and its associated CPU and Audio Board
handle sector five and will in the future process an additional three sectors.

The Master Switch described above is fully duplicated in Master Switch 2. This
enables full processor immunity.

Train Radio Dispatch System

The TWI Bus Protocol enables interconnection of up to 128 different devices using
only two bi-directional bus lines, one for clock (SCL) and one for data (SDA). Within
the Master Switch the TWI Bus interfaces data communications between DSP
Boards one and two and eight FFSK Modems. All devices connected to this bus have
individual addresses and the mechanism for resolving bus contention is inherent in
the TWI Protocol.

The maintenance terminal Is used for monitoring "Server, DSP Boards or


TDSC/CTDSC PC activities remotely. The operating system for the Maintenance
Terminal isZenwalkv.4.2, a Linux based operating system.

All activity or call logs on the server, DSP Boards and TDSC/CTDSC PCs can be
accessed through this Maintenance Terminal to enable system monitoring and fault
analysis to be conducted. The data can be printed via a printer connected to the
Terminal.
