Sun Dance Lesson Plan

Goal: To develop an understanding of contrasting styles in Sun Dance of dance and song.
Focus: Measures 5-56

1. Warm Up (Teacher Developed Material): (5 Minutes)


Materials Needed: Hand-out of rhythms

Split the ensemble in half having half play the song-like rhythm, and the other half play the
dance-like rhythm on an concert C Major scale.
-Focus on articulations, style, and phrasings
Assessment: Splitting group in half will allow for assessment

2. Score: (5 Minutes)
Materials Needed: Score and parts for Sun Dance, appropriate instrumentation
*Trombones play Bassoon cues

Play through measures 5-56


-asses and instruct as necessary to address problems that arise.

Things to look for:


Measures 5-17: Contrast between oboe and dance accompaniment (trombones, saxes, clarinets)
Measures 21-26: Song-like, as legato as possible
Measure 26: CHANGE IN STYLE: Dance-like
Measure 31-36: Legato flutes and saxes contrast dance-like brass
Measure 36-56: Song-like clarinets and saxes, contrast (mostly brass)

Final Run-Through after problems addressed (Assessment of full ensemble progress)
