mildinfectionsinthemother;however,therearemuch CMVinfections,IgGavidityhasrecentlybeenfoundto
moreseriousconsequencesforinfectiontothefetus.In beusefulforidentifyingprimaryinfections.SinceIgM
addition,TORCHinfectionsposeagreaterrisktothe antibodiescanbeproducedfollowingreactivationorre

TOXOPLASMAGONDII
ToxoplasmosisiscausedbytheprotozoanparasiteToxoplasmagondii.TransmissionofT.gondiitothefetuscanresultin
serioushealthproblems,includingmentalretardation,seizures,blindness,anddeath.Theriskofcongenitaldiseaseis
lowest(1025%)whenmaternalinfectionoccursduringthefirsttrimesterandhighest(6090%)whenmaternalinfection
occursduringthethirdtrimester.However,congenitaldiseaseismoreseverewheninfectionisacquiredinthefirst
trimester.TheoverallriskofcongenitalinfectionfromacuteT.gondiiinfectionduringpregnancyrangesfrom
approximately2050%.Toxoplasmosisusuallyisdiagnosedonthebasisofantibodydetectionandinacuteinfections,as
IgGandIgMantibodylevelsgenerallyrisewithin12weeksofinfection.Specifically,thedetectionofT.gondiispecificIgM
antibodieshasbeenusedasanaidindeterminingthetimeofinfection:anegativeIgMtestresultwithapositiveIgGresult

RUBELLAVIRUS
RubellaisaviralillnesscausedbyatogavirusofthegenusRubivirusandischaracterizedbyamild,maculopapularrash.
Rubellainfectioninthefirsttrimesterofpregnancyoftenresultsinspontaneousabortionorseverefetaldefectsassociated
withCongenitalRubellaSyndrome,includingheart,brain,earoreyemalformations,deafness,microcephaly,andmental
retardation.Aggressiveimmunizationofpreschoolchildrenhasgreatlyreducedtheincidenceofrubellaepidemics,buta

Cytomegalovirus(CMV)isoneoftheherpesviruses.Thisgroupofvirusesincludestheherpessimplexviruses,varicella
zostervirus,andEpsteinBarrvirus.CMVistheleadingcauseofcongenitalviralinfectionandtheviruscanbetransmitted
tothefetusduringpregnancyaftermaternalprimaryinfectionoreventuallytherecurrenceofalatentvirus.Transmission
generallyresultsinseverecomplications(hepatosplenomegaly,microcephaly,hydrocephaly,lowbirthweight,prematurity,
