I Want To Be A Nurse

1. Define what nursing means to you.

There are many different definitions, ideas, and perceptions, that people have for nursing. To me, a

nurse is a problem solver, a quick thinker, a teacher, and a helping hand to those around her (or him).

First and foremost, the nurse is there to protect their patient. They provide a safe, comfortable

environment, in which to assist patients with their current healthcare needs. They are a member of a

collaborative team of individuals that are all working toward a common goal helping the individual to

the best of their abilities, while also considering their own health, the patient, and their familys or loved

ones concerns when providing/planning care. They are advocates for their patients and provide a voice

that can be heard when their patient is depending on them. A nurse is someone whom is

compassionate, empathetic, and an individual who truly wants to help others.

2. Describe your goals for nursing, area(s) that you are interested in working.

My goal is to become a licensed registered nurse and begin, what I feel will be, a rewarding life long

career. First, I will successfully complete the Associates program through Southwestern, then I plan to

obtain my Bachelors degree through OHSU. I will forever be learning because there will always be more

knowledge and new technologies, that will be beneficial/necessary to my career advancement.

Although I have considered a nurse anesthetist program in the future, I am open to any nursing career

future that speaks to me as I learn more. At this point, Im interested in learning more about all the

different roles and locations in which nurses provide care.

3. Define ethical nursing practice, refer to ANA Code of Ethics and OCNE Competencies.

Ethical nursing practice, referring to the American Nursing Associations code of ethics for nurses

includes, respect for others, a commitment to the patient, advocacy for the patient, the accountability
and responsibility for practice, a duty to self and duty to others, a contribution to healthcare

environments, advancement of the nursing profession, promotion of community and world health, and

promotion of the nursing profession. Everything that a nurse does, in all different settings, should be

done ethically and respectfully, while considering the patient, self, and team members. Nursing isnt

just a job, its a life time commitment to do good for others and self.
