Course Description:
The course starts with Functions as fundamental tool for calculus, their definition and graph, and
operations on functions, and the concept of inverse function are presented along with a survey of most useful
algebraic and transcendental functions like polynomials, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic. Then
limits of functions and their rules are given. The derivative and its various meanings and rules of
differentiation with applications in graph sketching and optimization. An introduction to integration is given
including definite and indefinite with the substitution rule. Hyperbolic functions and inverse hyperbolic
functions along with their derivatives and anti-derivatives are introduced.

Course General Objectives:

1. Recognize different kinds of functions and determine their domain, range and graph. Furthermore, to
be able to do various operations on functions especially composition and inversion.
2. Relate the concepts of limits and continuity of a function and be able to calculate the limit using rules
of limits.
3. Infer from the meanings of the derivative of a function on how to calculate it for all the familiar
differentiable functions.
4. Use the derivative of the function to locate and classify all the critical points and sketch the graph of
the function; and to evaluate some limits with indeterminate form.
5. Understand the meaning of the definite and the indefinite integrals and be able to evaluate such
integrals using the substitution rule.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)/Competencies:

On successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:

Identify properties of functions and their inverses.

Group properties of polynomials, rational functions, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric,
and inverse-trigonometric functions.
Explain the meaning of domain and range.
Design graphs using functions, its first derivative and its second derivative.
Solve algebraic limits, and apply LHopitals rule to determine limits of simple expressions.
Recognize and apply the procedures of differentiation accurately, including implicit and
logarithmic differentiation.
Evaluate linear approximations of functions.
Evaluate accurately definite and indefinite integrals.

Teaching Methods:
The structure of this course is elaborated throughout lectures, homework and exams.
