KIRCHNERS ALLEGE TORTURE IN BID TO DISLODGE NEWSPRINT

COMPANY OWNERS
Argentina’s newsprint supplier is at the centre of an ownership wrangle as
Presidential family, the Kirchners, attempt a state grab linked to torture
allegations during the 1970s military dictatorships. Reports suggest the
Kirchners will use the allegations to force newspaper groups Clarin and La
Nacion gained their stakes in Papel Prensa via alleged illegalities, human
rights abuses and coercion” against the family of a key stakeholder at the
time, banker David Gravier.

GREENS POLICY SQUEEZE LOOMS AS AUSTRALIAN ELECTION

HANGS IN BALANCE
The Greens in Australia have suddenly become very important players in the
country’s federal politics after what looks like being the first hung parliament
since World War II. Although the outcome is not totally clear at this stage, it’s
considered that either of the major players will have to deal with Greens. The
party have been trenchant critics of the government’s climate change and
forest encouragement policies, and is expected to utilise its new electoral
power on key policy areas.

SECTOR ‘WAIT AND SEE’ APPROACH TO HUNG AUSTRALIAN

ELECTION
Meanwhile, Australia’s plantations and paper products industry is hoping that
the shape of the new government in Australia will be positive for the sector.
The Australian elections at the weekend left the country with a “hung
parliament”, with neither the governing Labor Party nor the opposition Liberal-
National Coalition having control. That leaves power shifting to The Greens,
which added its first member of parliament, and upped its presence in the
Senate, along with three rural-based independents. Industry agency, A3P, is
taking a wait and see approached to speculation on the final outcome.

ARGENTINA VOWS TO PREVENT SOROS-BACKED DAM ON RIO

URUGUAY
Meanwhile, the dispute between the government of Cristina Kirchner and the
newspaper group Clarin took an unusual twist with the announcement that
Argentina will prevent the building of a dam on the Rio Uruguay. The river
was at the centre of a dispute between Argentina and Uruguay over a pulp
mill built on the Uruguay side of the river, and news that Clarin and a
company associated with the American financier George Soros were planning
to build a dam led to a government move against the proposal.

ALTO PARANÁ MOVES TO QUASH BID TO TAKE LAND FOR FOOD

PRODUCTION
Meanwhile, the Argentina subsidiary of Chile’s Arauco, Alto Paraná, has
warned that a proposal to take parcels of its land in the Argentine province of
Misiones for food production is unfeasible. The pulp and wood producers met
recently with Deputies in the Misiones Government, to discuss proposals that
would force Alto Paraná to make a third of its lands available for food
production.

Forestry topics, speakers and opportunities. See details of the conference

For decades, some university endowments, pension funds and other big
investors have put part of their money to work in the woods. They’ve bought
large tracts of timberland, viewing them as an asset class separate from
stocks, bonds and other forms of real estate, The New York Times’s Tim Gray
writes

UGA’s Center for Forest Business professionals and invited speakers will
provide you insight in the resilience of forest resources and how timberland
values have been impacted by the financial markets. The conference should
meet your timberland questions as well as provide you the information
necessary to make the most prudent timberland investment decisions
involving the process of purchasing, management and divesting a tract of
timberland.

The Center for Forest Business integrates the latest academic research and
sound financial methods to provide education and service to forest industry,
investors and landowners throughout the world.
