Spring stored-energy mechanism, type HMB 4

The spring stored-energy mechanism comprises the following devices: - Auxiliary switch S1 (spring excursion switch)

- Auxiliary switch SO

- Heater E1

- Tripping coils Y1 to Y3

3.2.3

Density indicator

Principally, the density indicator is just a visual representation of the SF6 gas density of the circuit-breaker, Monitoring of the gas density takes place at the density monitor and only the density monitor signals have a decisive effect on the density measurement function!

The density indicator is a modified manometer, which by means of a bi-metal element comoensates for pressure fluctuations resulting from changes in temperature. Through this temperature compensation, an indication of the SF6 gas density is obtained.

The density indicator is designed for a specific plant density. In the case of HECS, this is 40.7 kg/m3.

Operation of the density indicator: In order to obtain an exact indication of the density, an equalisation oftemperature conditions between the circuit-breaker system and the environment is required. This will correspond to the switched-off state of the circuit-breaker system.

The density indicator can only be used as a fill level indicator under equalised temperature conditions.

3.2.4

Density monitor

The density monitor operates according to the reference chamber principle. This reference chamber is temperature-compensated. Contained in the reference chamber is a volume of SF 6 gas, which is designed for the critical gas density.

In the event of a loss of gas in the circuit-breaker, signals are sent to the controls via microswitches in the density monitor, which produce the corresponding alarm signal. .

3.2.5

Motors, power contactors

Motor M90 for the disconnector drive, motor MO for the drive ofthe circuit-breakers and motors M81, M82 and M91 for the earthing switch and start-up switch drives are switched On or Off via power contactors in the separate control cabinet.

3.2.6

Position indicators, operating elements

A mechanically-coupled position indicator is fitted on all the component drives. The operating elements for the SF6 gas are mounted on the pole frame.

- Pressure gauge as an indicator ofthe SF6 gas pressure

- Gas coupling (groove fitting) - DILO DN 8 mm for filling the SF6 gas line and the three circuit-

breakers.

The control cabinet provides all the functions of: - Drive for circuit-breaker 00

- Disconnector 09

- Earthing switches 081 and 082

- Start-up switch SFU 091

assembled together and provided with mutual interlocking.

The definitive design and distribution ofthe functions can be found in the relevant control schematic.

3.3 Conditions for switching operations

Operating push buttons and operating elements in the control cabinet

The operating push buttons can only be operated when the changeover to local control has been made locally. If an operating pushbutton is operated without carrying out the changeover to local control, all the conditions for this switching operation are checked by the system. If one of the conditions is not met, the switching operation is not carried out.

Example:

The circuit-breaker is energised.

An attempt is made to operate illuminated pushbutton 5, earthing switch, generator side.

The system checks whether all conditions for this switching operation are enabled. This is not the case.

The earthing switch remains in the OFF position.

3.4 SF6 gas compartment

3.4.1 Properties of the SF 6 gas

The pressurised SF6 gas serves as an insulating medium in the circuit-breakers.

Chemically pure SFs gas cannot be detected by the human sense organs. The gas is heavier than air and can accumulate at floor level and in cellars and can displace the air for breathing. There is a risk of suffocation. Gas masks do not protect against shortage of oxygen. In cases of doubt, the room must be ventilated.

Under the influence of electrical discharges, e.g. very high arc temperatures, gas decomposition products can be produced. These products are not conductive to electrici-

ty.

Used SFs gas can contain products of decomposition, which produce dust. They can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. When handling used SFs gas, wear safety glasses, protective gloves and fine particle mask to filter class P2S. Under no circumstances must you smoke, because you will inhale poisonous particles with the smoke.

3.4.2

Storage of SF6 gas cylinders

SF6 gas cylinders must only be stored in rooms without cellars or basements .

3.4.3

Relationship between density, pressure and temperature

See the adjacent SF6 gas characteristic curves.

Smoking is absolutely prohibited when handling SF6 gas decomposition products.

3.6 Function of the air cooler

The air cooler comes into operation when the HECS circuit-breaker system is switched on. Within the air cooler are two completely separate cooling circuits with redundant motors and fan impellers (circuit 3 - 4 for fresh cooling air and circuit 1 - 2 for the air circulating over the circuitbreaker system).

In the event of failure of an air cooler, the circuit-breaker system can be operated for a further 30 minutes at the full continuous current of 18,000 A/50 Hz or 17,000 A /60 Hz. After that, the current must be reduced at a rate of 1 kAlmin. to 13,000 A/50 Hz or 12,000 A /60 Hz. For information on the electrical controls, monitoring and alarm signals, see the relevant control schematic.

Circuit-breaker air circuit

By means of the fan compl., the circuit-breaker air is conducted via connection 1 of the air cooler into the circuit-breaker pole that is to be cooled.

The heated air is exhausted on the opposite side ofthe circuit-breaker pole and returned back to the air cooler via connection 2. Here, the heated air is cooled again by the counter-flow of the fresh-air circuit.

In the case offailure ofthe circulating air flow, the vane ofthe air-vane relay swings into the zero position and consequently operates the microswitch and the electrical alarm signal contact.

For alarms and signals, see the relevant control schematic.

Fresh-air circuit

The fresh air is drawn in by the fan compl. and circulates - imparting its cooling effect - through the cooling tubes ofthe heat-exchanger and is then exhausted from the air cooler via the freshair outlet 5.

In the case of failure of the fresh-air flow, the vane of the air-vane relay swings into the zero position and consequently operates the microswitch and the electrical alarm signal contact.

For alarms and signals, see the relevant control schematic.

1 HC0020305-002-AG

3.7 Function of the start-up switch

In the closed condition, the start-up switch forms the current connection to the static starting device SSW (static frequency converter).

Below approx. 60 % ofthe rated speed, the compressor of a gas turbine delivers insufficient air to run the gas turbine up to speed without additional motive power. Therefore, the gas turbine must first be accelerated up to 60 % ofthe rated speed before it can achieve the power required for further acceleration.

At the beginning ofthe starting process, the generator circuit-breaker interrupts the connection between the generator and the main transformer. The static starting device then imports the electrical power required for acceleration, either from the high voltage system, or from a diesel generator, which is connected to the auxiliary-mode busbar. The static frequency converter (SSW) converts the imported electrical power so that the delivered voltage and frequency are variable. This electrical power is supplied to the stator winding ofthe generator, which operates as a synchronous motor during the start-up period.

The start-up switch in the HECS circuit-breaker system forms the connection between the high voltage system/diesel generator and the static frequency converter. The distance to the frequency converter is jumpered out by means of a single-conductor cable. In order to prevent damage due to high currents, the start-up switch can be fitted with up to four fuses (max. 2,400 amperes).

3.10 Explanation of the five safety rules

Circuit-breaker is in the OFF position. 1 Isolate

That means disconnect all supply cables for all poles and from all sources.

2 Secure against switching on again

That means attaching signs prohibiting switching on, removing the key from the control cabinet andcarrying the key with you so that switching is not possible while work is being carried out.

3 Check the de-energised state

That means checking everything (switch-off location, working location, including connection terminals which do not normally carry a voltage).

4 Earthing and short-circuiting

That means switching in or installing, in accordance with regulations, earthing and shortcircuiting devices of sufficient cross section.

5 Cover up and fix barriers around adjacent live parts

That means use covers of high electric strength and construct barriers.

4 Transportll nstallation

- Additional information for installation can be obtained from the relevant dimensional drawing.

This is a component ofthe order documentation.

- During installation, correct axial alignment must be observed. As stipulated in the supplied documents, the axis height must be adjusted so that the axis ofthe generator circuit-breaker is aligned with the axes of the generator connection terminals.

The circuit-breaker system is assembled and transported as a complete unit.

4.1

Crane attachment

Suspended and raised loads!

If suspended and raised loads are allowed to fall, this can result in fatal injuries.

Ensure that correct procedures are used to secure loads and lifting equipment. Ensure that no person stands under suspended or raised loads or remains within the danger area.

For lifting the circuit-breaker system it is absolutely essential to use the associated transport beam 3 with the support 10, the four flat slings 1, 2, and the shackles 6. These items are specially designed for the circuit-breaker, type HECS in order to balance the centre of gravity of the circuit-breaker system. Protect the enclosure covers, poles 1 and 3 using suitable means (support 10). Carefully lower the transport beam 3 into the middle and on to the enclosure covers 7. With shackle 6, fix the four flat slings 1-2 in the correct sequence on to the welded-on eyes of the pole frame 8. Attach the rope slings 2 to the crane hook; slowly raise the crane 9; the circuit-breaker system will hang level from the crane.

4.1.1

Transport beam

The transport beam must only be used for lifting and transporting the HECS generator circuit-breaker system. Any other application is deemed to be misuse.

4.2 Transporting the circuit-breaker system without a crane

Transporting the circuit-breaker system without a crane must only be carried out using multiroller or caterpillar "skates" located under the supports. Fork lift trucks or similar auxiliary means must not be used, in order to exclude any possible damage to the operating linkage. Equally, the circuit-breaker enclosures, motor drives and all other equipment items must not be used for the attachment of lifting equipment.

4.3 Lowering to the floor

Lower the circuit-breaker system down on to a level floor until it rests on the four transport legs.

4.4 Directions for SF 6 gas filling

In order to prevent any ingress of moisture, the break chambers of the circuit-breaker system are filled with SF6 gas, which is pressurised to a transport pressure of 150 kPa absolute (corresponds to 0.5 bar gauge pressure).

The gas filling must remain in place under all circumstances until commissioning of the circu it-breaker system. See handling and storage instructions [CH HS 131087] Chapter 6.

The HECS circuit-breaker system is positioned while suspended from the crane.

For all possible installation methods, floor levelling and dimensions, refer to the HECS dimensional drawing.

4.5.1

Assembly of the generator circuit-breaker legs

The circuit-breaker legs 7 and the braces 6 are fitted to the transport legs 5 for transport ofthe circuit-breaker system.

Remove the transport legs 5 from the pole frame 8. Unscrew the circuit-breaker legs 7 from the transport legs 5.

Fit the circuit-breaker legs 7 to the pole frame 8 with the bolts 4, washers 2 and 3 and the nuts 1. Tighten the nuts 1 to a torque of 130 Nm.

Any unevenness ofthe floor must be levelled with the shim plates 9 under the circuit-breaker legs 7. Check with a spirit level.

If the pole frame 8 is distorted by too much force, in certain circumstances the disconnector tube may no longer move in or out. In addition, the function ofthe earthing switch contact blade may also be impaired.

Note:

Normally, the enclosure of the circuit-breaker system, type HECS is welded to the connection terminal. In this case, the braces 6 must be removed after welding the enclosure so that the circuit-breaker legs 7 can accommodate any expansion (heat effects) in the length of the connection terminal enclosure. If the circuit-breaker enclosure is not welded to the connection terminal, the braces 6 must remain fitted to act as supports forthe circuit-breaker system. After alignment of the circuit-breaker system, the circuit-breaker legs 7 and the control cabinet legs and, in the case of unwelded enclosure as stated in the text above also the braces 6, must be bolted to the floor.

Connection ofthe enclosure and pole frame earthing

The enclosure is constructed to be insulated from the pole frame and is separately earthed: - Via the connection terminal, which is earthed at a specific location, or

- Directly to the enclosure at the connection provided (see dimensional drawing).

- The pole frame is earthed separately.

In the case of circuit-breaker systems with earthing switches, the earthing of the enclosure must be made short circuit proof.

In this way, the whole circuit-breaker system, type HECS is safe to touch. Earthing connections must be neither loosened nor removed.

Enclosure

- The enclosure 8 of the circuit-breaker system, type HECS is welded to the connection terminal.

The enclosure must be joined to the connection terminal so that a reverse current of approx. 90% of the circuit-breaker rated current can be carried.

If the enclosure is unable to carry reverse current, this can, as a consequence of uncompensated magnetic fields, lead to heating of neighbouring ferromagnetic parts and, under certain circumstances to heating of the inner conductor.

The weld seam must be designed and made so that a reverse current of approx. 90% of the circuit-breaker rated current can be carried.

- Connection ofthe enclosure and pole frame earthing.

- We recommend that the enclosure cover be marked before disassembly so that the same

enclosure cover 7 can be re-fitted to the corresponding enclosure 8 thereby preventing problems during re-assembly.

- Remove enclosure cover 7 from the enclosure 8.

- The strips 3 do not have to be removed.

Suspended and raised loads!

If suspended and raised loads are allowed to fall, this can result in fatal injuries.

Ensure that correct procedures are used to secure loads and lifting equipment. Ensure that no person stands under suspended or raised loads or remains within the danger area.

The enclosure cover can weigh up to 120 kg depending on the equipment fitted.

- Attach the enclosure cover 7 to the crane by fastening ropes and hooks to the lifting-eyes 9.

Remove the bolts 5 and washers 6.

- Re-assembly of the enclosure covers is only carried out after commissioning, Chapter 5.

- For as long as the enclosure covers 7 are removed, the exposed parts and especially all

contact components (disconnector tube, contact fingers, etc.) must be carefully covered to protect them against the effects of any water and dust, etc.

If work is interrupted, cover the open enclosures with plastic sheeting or the enclosure cover 7.

5 Commissioning a new installation

Commissioning is carried out principally by ABB certified and audited personnel.

5.1 General

- Commissioning of the circuit-breaker system and first installation must be carried out by commissioning the individual components.

The circUit-breakers must not be sWitched If there IS insufficient SF 6 gas pressure (SF 6 gas pressure in accordance with the pressure scale given in the relevant control schematic). See handling and storage instructions [CH HS 131087] ChapterS.

- The circuit-breaker system must be installed in accordance with Chapter 4 and an inspection must be carried out.

- All data that is checked or measured must agree with the manufacturer's final inspection protocol and must be entered in a commissioning protocol record sheet and be kept for later comparisons. The commissioning protocol for the type HECS can be obtained from ASS.

- All electrical connections must be carried out in accordance with the relevant control schematic.

- All position indicators are to be compared with the actual position ofthe individual components.

5.2 Circuit-breaker

- Disconnector 1 is in the ON position.

- Earthing switches 2 and 4 are open (in the OFF position).

- Start-up switch SSW S is open (in the OFF position).

- As supplied in the ex works condition, the circuit-breaker system is already evacuated and

provided with a low-pressure filling of SF 6 gas (transport pressure); see handling and storage instructions, Chapters 21 and 23.

Iftransport pressure is present, evacuation is unnecessary.

- Iftransport pressure is no longer available (e.g. ifthe SF6 gas line has been ruptured during transport) moisture will be present in the break chambers of the circuit-breakers 5. For drying, evacuation and refilling of the circuit-breakers with SF6 gas, consultation with the manufacturer's works is necessary.

- Fill up the SF 6 gas of the circuit-breaker to the rated density via the gas coupling 12 on the pole frame 11. Observe the SF 6 gas density characteristic curve on Page 28.

E) Checking the electrical disconnection Transformer and generator in de-energised state.

In the control cabinet, key set to "LOCAL CONTROL" position. A) Execution

Bring the drive linkage into the middle position using the hand crank.

In the control cabinet, operate one of the illuminated push buttons 09 to 091.

If the drive linkage operates in the opposite direction, immediately (with 1 second) disconnect the supply voltage.

If the direction of rotation is incorrect, check the phase sequence of the motor supply (exchange two phases of the motor supply).

During electrical "ON" or "OFF" switching operations, the motor drive must stop at a position 3/4 to 13/4 revolution before the limit stop in the motor drive; check using the hand crank 29.

Check of all indicating devices and alarm signals.

During automatic motorised operation (REMOTE CONTROL), all positions of the breakers are checked. It is impossible to carry out a motorised switching operation, if one switching condition is not met in accordance with Points 3.3.1 to 3.3.4.

5.4 Earthing switch, short circuit connection

5.4.1 Earthing switch

Earthing switches compl. can be fitted (generator side) and/or (transformer side). In the closed condition, the earthing switches constitute a short-circuit-proof connection between the inner conductors and the enclosures. Operation ofthe earthing switches is by a common motor drive for each side (generator side or transformer side). The motor drives ofthe earthing switches can also be operated by hand using the hand crank, provided that the key-operated interlock mechanism is properly considered.

Function

Earthing switches must only be switched in the de-energised state.

Earthing switches are employed for the protection of personnel when working on current-carrying (normally live) plant or device components, which are, nevertheless, switched off.

The earthing switches are installed and tested in the factory as a three-pole unit together with the HECS circuit-breaker system.

If the circuit-breaker has been installed with the pole frame finally screwed to the floor, the following work must be carried out before commissioning:

The entry of the contact lever into the earthing switch contact compl. of the circuit-breaker/ disconnector must be checked and, if necessary, re-adjusted.

Min. 27 mm

:t,

Fig. 5.4.3.1

For this, the earthing switches must be moved using the hand crank before the first operation of the motor drive, see Section 5.3. Ensure that the mechanism is freely movable.

Check the electrical controls, key-operated interlock and direction of rotation ofthe motor drive in accordance with Section 5.3.

If necessary, clean and re-grease the silver-plated sliding areas of the contact parts of the earthing switch, see handling and storage instructions, Section 2.2.

Important!

The circuit-breaker enclosure must be earthed for the maximum earthing switch short circuit current and, in particular, this must be:

a) via the welded-on and appropriately earthed enclosure ofthe generator connection terminal, or

b) to the earthing switch strap of the circuit-breaker enclosure.

5.4.2

Short circuit connection with motor drive

Purpose: to adjust the protection settings during commissioning of the generating plant.

In order to establish the function of the short circuit connection, first of all the earthing contact bracket must be removed which connects the short circuit conductor rail to the circuit-breaker enclosure and, therefore, has earth potential.

When that has been done, a three-pole short circuit can be made by closing the generator side earthing switches. Closing ofthe earthing switches must only be carried out with the de-excited generator and is performed by operation ofthe corresponding pushbutton on the switch panel mimic diagram in the control cabinet. Next, the generator can be excited and the current should be adjusted as required during a specific time to correspond with the load profile curve shown in Figure on Page 73.

Switching off the short circuit connection is carried out by operation ofthe corresponding pushbutton on the switch panel mimic diagram in the control cabinet and must take place with the generator completely de-excited.

The switching capacity and switching frequency of the generator side earthing switch under these conditions is set out in Table 5.4.1. It is prohibited to exceed these values.

It is prohibited to switch the short circuit connection On or Off by means of the generator side earthing switch when the generator is in the excited state, as this can cause serious damage or destruction!

After making the adjustment, the earthing contact bracket must be re-fitted. Caution! Very high temperatures can occur on the short circuit conductor rail.

5.7 Current transformers, capacitors, voltage transformers, surge arrestors

The following components are optional and are installed according to the requirements of the customer and the specification of the circuit-breaker.

5.7.1 Current transformers

For monitoring and measuring, current transformers 12 can be installed on one or both sides (generator side/transformer side) ofthe circuit-breaker system.

The technical data can be obtained from the order documentation.

Caution with regard to opening the secondary circuits when the circuit-breaker system is in operation. The secondary current circuit must never be open.

With the loss of the secondary load, the occurring primary current will produce a magnetizing effect with the consequence that secondary-side overvoltages will occur, thereby endangering personnel. In addition, the iron core will be thermally damaged in the case of operation with an open secondary winding. Before opening the secondary circuit, which means disconnecting the connected measuring device and connecting a measuring instrument, it is absolutely essential to short circuit the connection pins with a copper wire.

5.7.2

Capacitors

Depending on the plant conditions and the circuit-breaker type, capacitors 6 are required on the generator and/or transformer side.

The technical data can be obtained from the order documentation or the rating plate.

The resulting current that will flow when a constant direct voltage is applied varies depending on temperature, voltage and time. It is a combination of the charging current, absorption current and residual current.

5.7.3

Voltage transformers

For monitoring and measuring, voltage transformers 2 can be installed on one or both sides (generator side/transformer side) ofthe circuit-breaker system.

The technical data can be obtained from the order documentation.

5.7.4

Surge arrestors

For protection of the plant, surge arresters 4 can be installed in the circuit-breaker system. The technical data can be obtained from the order documentation.

5.8 Primary cable

- Contact points must be clean, with a bright surface free of oxide.

- On the disconnector and breaker side, connect the primary cable 8 to the disconnector or

circuit-breaker using the threaded fittings and tighten to a torque of 80 Nm. - Connectthe cable to the voltage transformer.

If voltage tests are to be carried out on the plant, the following measures must be taken with regard to the HECS circuit-breaker system

- Voltage test

Remove all primary connections to voltage transformers, surge arresters and capacitors by unscrewing the screwed connections and dismantling.

Earth the capacitors by means of copper wire (approx. 0.5 mm2) as shown in Figure 5.9. After the voltage test, remove the copper wire 1 and assemble all primary connections.
