ALICE IN THE WONDERLAND

1. What is the summary of the story?

Alice sees the White Rabbit scurry down a rabbit hole and decides to follow him. In
Wonderland, she meets an assortment of strange characters, including the Cheshire Cat, who
advises her to attend a tea party thrown by the March Hare. After the Mad Hatter tries to cut her
hair, Alice runs away from the tea party. She soon finds herself in a garden where servants are
painting roses red to appease the Queen of Hearts. Alice is called upon to testify against a tart thief.
When Alice admits she knows nothing about the crime, the Queen orders her execution. Alice wakes
up at the last minute to realize this was all a dream.

2. Give 5 characters in the story and describe each.

ALICE
She is a seven-year-old English girl with lots of imagination and is fond of showing off her
knowledge. Alice is polite, well raised and interested in others, although she sometimes
makes the wrong remarks and upsets the creatures in Wonderland. She is easily put off by
abruptness and rudeness of others.

WHITE RABBIT
The White Rabbit is nervous and always in a hurry. However, he is confident enough about
himself to contradict the King of Hearts.

QUEEN OF HEARTS
The Queen of Hearts rules over Wonderland and is a tyrant violent, authoritative and
dominant. She likes to play croquet with live flamingoes and hedgehogs as mallets and balls
(but only when she wins, and by her own rules) and constantly orders the beheading of
people when something isnt to her liking (although these orders apparently never are
actually carried out). She also has her own ideas
about how trials should be conducted, and is feared by all other Wonderland inhabitants
because of her lack of patience and explosive character.

CAT
The Cheshire Cat is the only character in Wonderland who actually listens to Alice. With his
remarks, he teaches Alice the rules of Wonderland. He gives her insight in how things work
down there.
MADHATTER
The Mad Hatter is one of the members of the Mad Tea Party. Later he also appears as a
witness during the trial. He occasionally is very rude and provokes Alice during the tea party.
When he is called upon by the Queen, he is very nervous and frightened.

3. Reflection about the story Alice in Wonderland.

I had never actually read the stories myself. I have to admit, Im a bit confused by them.
There must be more there that Im not seeing because I didnt exactly love them. I did enjoy the
constant play on words in the conversations. There were two quotes in Through the Looking-Glass
that I felt summed up the stories. The first is where Alice explains that Its exactly like a riddle with
no answer! The second is the poem that ends the book. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the
days go by, Dreaming as the summer die. Ever drifting down the streamLingering in the golden
gleamLife, what is it but a dream? I did enjoy the whole play. But honestly there are some parts of
the play that I didnt understand.
