PART THREE: READING
I. Read the passage below and choose the correct answer for each question. Write your
answers A, B, C or D on your answer sheet. (5 pts)
Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosine, home heating oil, residual fuel oil,
and lubricating oils, come from one source-crude oil found below the earth's surface, as well
as under large bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as
25,000 feet into the earth's interior. Sometimes crude oil is secured by drilling a hole through
the earth, but more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source or
pumping forces crude oil to the surface.

5 Ms. Ta Thanh Hien Hanoi Unniversity Lize.vn H&H English Centre

Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour.
Petroleum products are always measured in forty-two-gallon barrels.
Petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent or
opaque, but regardless, their chemical composition is made up of only two elements: carbon
and hydrogen, which form compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found
in union with the hydrocarbons are few and are classified as impurities. Trace elements are
also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded. The combination
of carbon and hydrogen forms many thousands of compounds which are possible because of
the various positions and joinings of these two atoms in the hydrocarbon molecule.
The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and
condensing the vapors. These products are the so-called light oils, such as gasoline, kerosine,
and distillate oil. The residue remaining after the light oils are distilled is known as heavy or
residual fuel oil and is used mostly for burning under boilers. Additional complicated refining
processes rearrange the chemical structure of the hydrocarbons to produce other products,
some of which are used to upgrade and increase the octane rating of various types of
gasolines.
1. All of the following are true EXCEPT
A. crude oil is found below land and water
B. crude oil is always found a few hundred feet below the surface
C. pumping and pressure force crude oil to the surface
D. a variety of petroleum products is obtained from crude oil
2. The word "minute" in line 10 is closest in meaning to .
A. instant B. huge C. insignificant D. timely
3. Many thousands of hydrocarbon compounds are possible because .
A. the petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance
B. complicated refining processes rearrange the chemical structure
C. the two atoms in the molecule assume many positions
D. the pressure needed to force it to the surface causes molecular transformation
4. How is crude oil brought to the surface?
A. expansion of the hydrocarbons
B. pressure and pumping
C. vacuum created in the drilling pipe
D. expansion and contraction of the earth's surface

6 Ms. Ta Thanh Hien Hanoi Unniversity Lize.vn H&H English Centre

5. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Heating and condensation produce the various products.
B. The various petroleum products are produced by filtration.
C. Chemical separation is used to produce the various products.
D. Mechanical means such as the centrifuge are used to produce the various products.
II. Read the following passage carefully and fill each numbered blank with ONE
suitable word. Write your answers on your answer sheet. (10 pts)
Population growth affects almost (1) aspect of everyday life. This is (2) a continual
growth in the earths population forces us to change the ways we use the land. For example,
an expanding population needs more land (3) housing, shops and industry. An expanding
population also means that we need to grow (4) food and build more hospitals, schools and
roads. But the area of land available for human use is fixed. In fact, only about one third of
the earths surface is land, and (5) one third of that is suitable to live on. For example, there
are large areas of the earth (6) as deserts and polar icecaps that cannot at present support
human life. Of course there are low population densities in some parts of the world, (7) in
most cases the land resources in such areas are already stretched (8) the limit. One
immediate answer to our population growth is to (9) deserts and swamplands
habitable. But the long-term (10) is to stabilize the earths population
III. Read the passage below and choose the correct word to complete each numbered
blank. Write your answers A, B, C or D on your answer sheet. (5 pts)
A POWERFUL INFLUENCE
There can be no (1) at all that the Internet has made a huge difference to our lives. Parents are
worried that children spend too much time playing on the Internet, hardly (2) doing anything
else in their spare time. Naturally, parents are (3) to find out why the Internet is so attractive,
and they want to know if it can be harmful for their children. Should parents worry if their
children are spending that much time (4) their computers?
Obviously, if children are bent over their computers for hours, (5) in some game, instead of
doing their homework, then something is wrong. Parents and children could decide how
much use the child should (6) of the Internet, and the child should give his or her (7) that it
wont interfere with homework. If the child is not (8) to this arrangement, the parents can
