Phrase Assessment:
Primary:
Theory of Music -- 2. Comprehension of beginning notational elements and form in music
1. Notation Acquisition:
a. At the conclusion of phrase lesson, have students sit in front of the board.
b. Have each student practice creating a rainbow (phrase marking) in the air with
their magic marker.
c. Demonstrate drawing a phrase marking on the board.
d. Have 2 students demonstrate phrase markings on the board.
2. Phrase Dictation Acquisition
a. Play a piece on the piano with 4 phrases have students show you how many
phrases there were in the piece on their fingers.
b. Demonstrate writing the four phrases on the board.
i. Show 2 ways that are wrong
1. Overlapping phrases markings
2. Phrase markings that are connected.
ii. Show the right way to write the four phrases.
3. Phrase Dictation Elaboration
a. Play another piece on the piano with 2-5 phrases.
b. Have students show on their fingers how many phrases there were.
c. Have 1 student demonstrate how to write it on the board.
d. Have students give feedback on what was correct/needs improvement.
4. Phrase Dictation Memory Strengthening
a. Have 2 more students demonstrate phrase dictation.
5. Phrase Dictation Assessment.
a. Give each student a crayon and sheet of paper.
b. Have them write their name on it.
c. Play a piece on the piano with 2-5 phrases
d. Have students draw the number of phrase markings that correspond with the piece
played.
e. Do this two times (front and back of paper).

Intermediate:
Theory of Music 2. Analyze and apply dynamics, tempo, meter, and articulation using
appropriate music vocabulary
1. Notation Acquisition:
a. At the conclusion of phrase lesson, have students sit in front of the board.
b. Have each student practice creating a rainbow (phrase marking) in the air with
their magic marker.
c. Demonstrate drawing a phrase marking on the board.
2. Phrase Dictation Acquisition
a. Point out two 2-bar rhythms written on the board (that are identical) and draw a
different set of phrase markings for each rhythm/phrase 1, and rhythm/phrase 2.
b. Play either phrase set 1 or phrase set 2 on the piano, and have students show
either 1 or 2 with their fingers to show which set they think it is.
c. Play the other phrase set, and have students show you which one it is.
3. Phrase Dictation Elaboration
a. Point out the 4 bar rhythm/melody on the board with no phrase markings.
b. Play this 4-bar rhythm, adding in 2-5 phrases.
c. Have 1 student draw the phrase markings that were played on the piano.
d. Have other students give feedback on what the student did well, and if there is
anything that needs to be fixed/improved.
4. Phrase Dictation Memory Strengthening
a. Have 2 more students demonstrate phrase dictation.
5. Phrase Dictation Assessment.
a. Give each student a crayon and a worksheet.
b. Have them write their name on it.
c. Play either A or B of the first set on the sheet, and have students circle the correct
one.
d. Play either A or B of the 4 bar rhythm, and have students circle the correct one
(located in the box on worksheet)
e. For the last section, have students draw in the phrases themselves for what they
hear the piano do.
