Each member of the group must solve the same problem using one of the following
types of packing: #13 Ceramic berl saddle, #16 Metal Pall Rings, #15 Plastic Ralu
Ring, 500Y Mellapak, 1Y Flexipac (no member of the same group must have exactly the
same packing). Write all solutions including graphical / spreadsheet printouts on long
Bond Paper or Yellow Paper. Deadline for submission is on the first meeting date next
week (Mon for 4ChEA and 4ChEC and Tues for 4ChEB). Note that there are students
with invalid emails and their names are listed below.
1. 10 m3/min of a gas mixture containing 15% NH3, 85% Air by mole shall be treated in a packed
absorber. 80% of the ammonia is to be absorbed using a water rate which is 2 times the
minimum. Operating conditions are 1.5 atm and 30 oC .
a. Determine the tower diameter.
b. Height of Packing if KG =0.8 (SI units) using NOG evaluated by all 4 methods. You may
use Excel to solve by the Method of Graphical Integration.
2. 15 m3/min of a gas mixture containing 15% SO2, 85 % Air by mole shall be treated in a packed
absorber in order to recover 85 % of the SO2 . The water rate is 25 % greater than the minimum.
Operating conditions are 1 atm and 20oC .
a. Determine the tower diameter
b. Height of Packing if KGa =80 kmols/hr-m3-atm using NOG evaluated by all 4 methods.
You may use Excel to solve by the Method of Graphical Integration.
3. 12 m3 /min of a gas mixture containing 22% NH3 , 78 % Air by mole shall be treated in a packed
absorber in order to recover 95 % of the NH3 . The water rate is 200 % greater than the
minimum. Operating conditions are 1 atm and 20oC .
a. Determine the tower diameter
b. Height of Packing if Kya =80 (SI units) using NOG evaluated by all 4 methods. You may
use Excel to solve by the Method of Graphical Integration.
4. A packed column (D= 40 cm) will treat 9000 L/min of a gas containing 15% NH3 , 85% Air at 1.5
atm and 30oC . Pure water enters the top of the column. 90% recovery of NH3 is desired. Find:
a. Water Rate ratio to minimum water rate
b. Height of Packing if KGa =80 kmols/hr-m3-atm using NOG evaluated by all 4 methods.
You may use Excel to solve by the Method of Graphical Integration.
5. A packed column (D= 50 cm) will treat 9000 L/min of a gas containing 10% NH3 , 90% Air at 1.5
atm and 30oC. Pure water enters the top of the column. 95% recovery of NH3 is desired. Find:
a. Water Rate ratio to minimum water rate
b. Height of Packing if KGa =80 kmols/hr-m3-atm using NOG evaluated by all 4 methods.
You may use Excel to solve by the Method of Graphical Integration.
6. A packed column (D= 40 cm) will treat 9000 L/min of a gas containing 15% SO2 , 85% Air at 1.5
atm and 25oC . Pure water enters the top of the column. 90% recovery of SO2 is desired. Find:
a. Water rate ratio to minimum water rate
b. Height of Packing if Ky = 0.75 (SI units) using NOG evaluated by all 4 methods. You may
use Excel to solve by the Method of Graphical Integration.
7. A packed column (D= 45 cm) will treat 10 m3 /min of a gas containing 20% SO2 , 80% Air at 1.5
atm and 20oC . Pure water enters the top of the column. 88% recovery of SO2 is desired. Find:
