Add 2-Digit Numbers 4-4

Abdulai Sesay 2nd Grade

I. Content Standards
2.NBT.B.5 Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place
value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction. Also 2.NBT.B.9
II. Prerequisites
Students should understand basic place value strategies
III. Essential Questions
What are you asked to find? (the sum of 46 and 26) Commented [AS1]: Questioning and discussion techniques.
What do you already know about adding two digit numbers? (If there are 10 or
more ones I can regroup 10 ones as 1 10)
Is there more than one correct way to solve this problem? (yes)
How can you solve it using regrouping? (add the ones first 6+6=12, so I regroup
10 ones as 1 ten and write 1 ten in the box at the top of the tens column, and two
at the bottom of the ones column.)
IV. Instructional Objective
Add two digit numbers, then explain the work.
V. Instructional Procedures
We will start by checking a few problems from last nights homework.
Next, we will move into the solve and share. Make sure to use the term regroup. I Commented [AS2]: Demonstrating flexibility and
will call five students to help demonstrate the solve and share by holding up responsiveness. I changed up the way we present the solve
and share.
cubes. Two will represent the two tens columns in the addends. Two will
represent the ones columns in the addends. One will represent the sum.
After that I will have a group model regrouping using the tens cubes.
Once we are done with the solve and share I will play the visual learning bridge.
We will move on to the guided practice, then the independent practice.
Jada/ten; Tahir/ten; Leeaunna/one; Sakai/one; Minnie-Lee/sum
VI. Materials & Equipment

Cubes
VII. Assessment
Exit ticket 27+23=50 Commented [AS3]: Using assessment in instruction
VIII. Differentiation
Students who need further explanation can use 10 cubes to help answer problems.
IX. Technology

X. Self-Assessment
I am looking for students to use the math vocabulary (regroup) to explain how
they answered problems.
Reflection

The lesson was a welcomed change from the way we normally do our solve and
share. This really helped students grasp the concept of regrouping. It was also
great for keeping their attention. There were several hands up as I asked
questions. As I walked around checking the independent practice I saw most
students regrouping properly. One common error was students forgetting to add
the regrouped number when adding the tens column. This was an easy mistake to
correct. I also noticed a few students making common addition errors which
caused them to get problems wrong. A simple recheck your math seemed to work
for this error. When I got the exit tickets back many of the students I had concerns
about got it right. I will work with the few that got it wrong.
