From the Pastor’s Desk - It Could Have Been Me?

It was 4 1/2 years ago (six
months to the day after
Katrina came through) that I
found myself, my wife, and
several from my community
starting out on a 14 hour
drive Southwest of Morgan-
ton, NC. Our destination was
the Mississippi coast (Biloxi,
MS).
We had been given our
clearance from Samaritan’s
Purse and we were ready to
go … at least we thought we
were.
When we arrived, it was
dark so we simply checked in
and went to bed. The next
morning when we got up for
breakfast, reality hit. The
pictures above were some of
the milder examples of what
Katrina did. We were told it
would be 10 years before the
town “looked like it did be-
fore.” Five years later, it
looks like 10 years is just the
beginning.
Houses have been rebuilt,
people have mourned and
continued with life, yet the
damage remains.
As we watch the news and
hear of oil in the gulf, we
must remember that oil is still
the least of their worries.
Many are still trying to pick
up the pieces of what hap-
pened nearly five years ago.

I remember when we left
Morganton how people asked
why we were going. One
even said that they asked for
it. It is true that some had
stayed to “weather the
storm”, but my heart broke to
hear someone not care.
What if it was my house …
my family … my life?
Yet while helping/trying to
show God’s love, one of the
homeowners came to us and
asked if she could pray for
us! In her time of darkness,
she still shined with light! …
And so should we!!!
The Mississippi Annual
Conference is once more
asking for help and as some-
one who saw the destruction
first hand, I ask you to con-
sider helping those in need as
you can..
