Professional Background
Dr. David E. Montgomery is senior fellow in the Division of Cardiology at Northwestern Memorial
Hospital where he uses the latest advances in medical therapy and state-of-the-art technology to treat
heart disease of all kinds, including coronary artery disease and heart attacks, heart failure, hypertension,
cholesterol abnormalities and heart valve disease. He also treats military veterans with heart disease at
the Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Board certified in internal medicine, he serves on staff
as a medical intensive care physician at hospitals in the Resurrection Healthcare System. Montgomery
has a PhD in physiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. He received his
doctorate of medicine from Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, where he now teaches
advanced medical practice to interns, residents and medical students. Dr. Montgomery’s patient care and
clinical work have won him induction into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
He holds memberships in a number of organizations including the American Heart Association and the
American College of Cardiology.

Research
Montgomery, also a researcher in the world-class Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, has published in a
range of medical and scientific journals. He is studying how scar formation after heart attacks may lead
to fatal heart rhythms. He is also a lead investigator on a study of a genetic heart condition, called
hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a common cause of sudden death in young athletes. Montgomery’s
biomedical research has been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health. He has received
several awards and national recognition for his research, including election into the esteemed Sigma Xi
Scientific Research Society.

partnered with a colleague to launch a motivational speaking venture, which toured nationally and abroad.
He has spoken to groups of thousands for such organizations as Teach for America, Muhlenberg College,
the Universal Foundation for Better Living Inc. as well as several colleges, schools, churches and
community groups. Dr. Montgomery has conducted seminars and as well as workshops in community
outreach programs with a message of physical and mental health and positive self-esteem. His outreach
work has earned him a number of awards, including the Outstanding Service Award from the University
Of Illinois College Of Medicine and the Dr. Herbert Nickens Award from the Association of American
Medical Colleges.
