Am I a motivating teacher? A Self-Reflection.

I started as an English teacher because I needed a job, but I didnt study for been

a teacher and I always was worry about my standard as a teacher. It is not an easy

job, but during the ten years that I worked as a bilingual teacher in elementary

school, I realized that a motivating teacher is the key for students success in any

learning process. To be a motivating teacher, he/she needs to be motivated. Sort

of, like students, teachers need to know which their type of motivation is because

they will be able to make whatever they could to do their best job.

For me, teaching is not a mission; it is a profession, and like any other, it requires a

certain set of knowledge, competencies, skills, and behaviors.

First of all, in my case as a teacher who is not self-employed and works for an

educational institution, my commitment to the institution should be expected.

Abiding by its rules and regulations and embracing its philosophical and

pedagogical principles are reasonable requirements.

An effective educator also needs to be committed to the profession, for example,

by being a member of teaching associations and developing a professional

learning network. Being committed to the profession also means engaging in

formal or informal continuous professional development. The greatest commitment

of a true educator should be with the STUDENTS and their LEARNING. I would

even argue that a commitment with the students and their learning may sometimes

even justify lack of commitment in the other aspects.

3
In my opinion, a teacher who is truly committed to students is one that puts

students learning and interests above everything else. Its a teacher who knows

that the continuity of the work started with students during the term/semester or

school year is essential and does their best to comply with the commitment theyve

made.

Starting right now, my commitments with my students are:

Continuos professional developing taking didactic courses to improve my

knowledge in new techniques and materials.

Searching everything about technological tools for students.

Sharing techniques and tools with teachers community.

Improving the self-learning in my students giving them the trust to improve

colaborative work, in every class activity.

Applying satisfaction surveys, to students, at the end of every scholar year

to know the point of views from my students.

Searching and using innovative materials to maintain students motivation

as long as I need.

Maintaining an effective communication with my students parents to know

characteristics of their family dynamic, this is so important in teachers class

performance.

Well, as you can see, there is a lot of things to do in teachers work but is not

impossible, all we need is to take correct decisions and realized which is the truly

task of us if we can leave a significative learning in our students.
