Project Name: Effects of diesel and biodiesel fuel treated (polluted) soil
on growth of the plants Project Type: Environment-Biology Project to
Summarize:
The effects of diesel and biodiesel fuel contamination on five plants Phaseolus
vulgaris, Cucumis sativus , Helianthus annuus, Capsicum annuum and Lycopersicon
esculentum were studied. This study aims at investigating the effect of biodiesel and
diesel oil contamination would have on the growth of the these plants. Germination
and root elongation are two critical stages in plant development that are sensitive to
environmental contaminants. So we aimed to find out if these contaminants would
have any positive affect out of its known negative influences.

10 ml diesel and biodiesel contamination did affect these plants in different ways.
Germination and growth were reduced or failed in some of them but not in all. There
was total inhibition of germination in Helianthus annuus and Phaseolus vulgaris
whose soil was contaminated by diesel. There was total inhibition of germination in
Phaseolus vulgaris whose soil was contaminated by biodiesel. There was a negative
effect of the both diesel and biodiesel on the growth of the Phaseolus vulgaris.

During this study, growth of the plants on biodiesel and diesel oil contaminated soil
proved that the reaction of the plants to diesel or biodiesel contaminated soil was
species specific. Different plants responded them differently. Diesel oil was affecting
some plants negatively whereas some as a fertilizer due to its organic content. We
got almost the same result for the biodiesel.

The development of plants grown in diesel and biodiesel oil contaminated soil differs
greatly from plants grown in uncontaminated soil. Tolerance of plants to diesel or
biodiesel oil and ability to germinate in diesel or biodiesel oil contaminated soil varied
greatly between plant species as well as within plant species.

The broadest differences in growth were seen within the

Phaseolus vulgaris, and Helianthus annuus while others
were tolerant of diesel oil contamination.
Lycopersicon esculentum, Cucumis sativus, Capsicum
annuum appeared to be largely unaffected diesel oil
contamination. In contrast diesel affected them basically as
fertilizer by providing them to grow better the oil
uncontaminated or control plants.
Helianthus annuus, and Phaseolus vulgaris failed to reach a
germination rate of the control rate. These two species failed
to germinate at all at diesel contamination level. Plant
species that successfully germinated and grew were studied
further to determine the effect of diesel oil contamination on
the later stages of plant development. This work investigates
the effect of diesel oil on plant growth and development.

Project Name: Organic glue from Ononis spinosa Project Type:

Environment-Biology Project to Summarize:
Derived from crude oil spills and chemical and synthetic substances produced at the
same time an important role in the furniture industry, the quantity of phenol
formaldehyde content adhesives are used today. This article related to lung disorders
and skin gives rise to problems that occur.

Considering these problems, the research started. Based on these

results as an alternative to chemical substances, found in plants and
stubble now aimed to make the lignocellulosic adhesives. As a result of
the necessary research in Turkmenistan are abundant in the chemical
structure of the spiny restharrow(Ononis spinosa) plant tannin,
mucilage, organic acids, etc.. We've found in abundance. spiny
restharrow(Ononis spinosa) plants, especially on the pharmaceutical
industry and are used in alternative medicine. Today, the organic glue
and glue-like features that are needed because they contain abundant
mucilage glue, we decided to make our spiny restharrow(Ononis
spinosa) from the plant.
1) commonly found in our country, and plenty of plants that contain cellulose and
gum waste (mainly to yandak cotton stalk, wheat stubble, the straw, corn stalks) to
achieve ecological and economic glue.
2) The production and therefore require more energy in the form of environmental
pollution to ensure the use of synthetic materials instead of natural raw materials.
3) to the economy of our country, to contribute to the ecological and human health.

Project Name: WASTE COFFEE GROUND BIODIESEL Waste product from

today is a new source of biodiesel for tomorrow Project Type: Environment-
Chemistry Project to Summarize:
Biodiesel from waste coffee ground is more stable than traditional biodiesel due to
coffee’s high antioxidant content. These spent coffee grounds contain more percent
of oil, that’s as much as traditional biodiesel feed stocks. We get the sufficient spent
coffee grounds from the production of espresso, cappuccino, and plain old-fashioned
cups of java, it often wind up in trash but now it becomes a renewable source of
energy. We collected spent coffee grounds from multinational coffee house. This
biodiesel production could be used to fuel trucks or cars. This experiment offer the
spent coffee grounds as a new source of energy instead of wind up in trash.

The procedure that was followed involved extracting the oil from the leftover of
coffee preparations. A technique to produce biodiesel from coffee oil has been
developed. The process includes two steps. First coffee oil is extracted from coffee
grounds by using simple reflux and the extracted oil is transesterified by potassium
hydroxide (KOH) as a catalyst. Effect of mol ratio of oil to alcohol and catalyst
amount is discussed. Fuel properties of coffee oil biodiesel were also compared
diesel.

Overall, this experiment suggested that good extraction of oil would depend on
coffee species. Because the percent of the extracted oil comes from different type of
coffee and it will affecting the amount of the extracted biodiesel. More percent of oil
in the waste coffee grounds will transesterify and we’ll get more amount of biodiesel,
then we will get more profit by using the waste product as a new source of biodiesel,
especially THE WASTE COFFEE GROUNDS.

Project Name:
The effect of lead exposure on skin elasticity Project Type: Environment-
Health Project to Summarize:
The goal of this project is to determine whether exposing chicken skin
to lead metal for an extended period of time (1 week) in DI water will
change the Young’s modulus of the skin. The aim of using lead in this
experiment is to be able to apply any findings to real-world situations
in which people become exposed to lead through their water pipes. If
it is found that lead does have adverse effects on chicken skin, the
findings can be used as a basis for further testing with human skin so
that the negative health effects of lead can be further understood. This
greater understanding could be used to generate more awareness of
the possible harms of lead exposure and to develop treatments against
lead poisoning. Based on literature findings on the composition of
collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, it is hypothesized that lead
exposure will make the skin more fragile and prone to breakage than
normal, resulting in a lower Young’s modulus than unexposed skin. By
comparing the Young’s moduli of the lead-exposed skin samples to the
Young’s moduli of unexposed samples using a one-tailed, unpaired t-
test in Excel, p<0.05 did reveal that the Young’s modulus of the
exposed samples were significantly less than that of the unexposed
samples.

Project Name: Making an environmental friendly perfume by simple

distillation of scented leaves and flowers . Project Type: Environment-
Chemistry Project to Summarize:
This project intends to provide an environmental friendly deodorant that can be used
in clothes, toilets, and body without harming the environment.

We developed the project out of the concern of studies done on ozone layer depletion
due to the adverse use of sprays (aerosols) hydrocarbons. The widely used aerosols
e.g. deodorants, body sprays, cloth sprays and toilet deodorants are synthetic and
contain CFCs which emissions have accounted for roughly 80% of total stratospheric
ozone depletion.

The process entails simple distillation of naturally scented flowers and leaves from a
plant locally found in Kenya known as rosella (common name). The rosella is a\

The process entails setting up a simple distillation process. The scented petals flower
are crushed physically in a mortar and pestle and put in a distilling flask and some
little water is added and the steam removes the scent from the flowers and petals.
The scented steam pass to the condenser where liquefaction takes place and the
scented liquid is then collected as the liquid perfume which can undergo several tests
for purity and suitability for use. Then it can be graded, packed and be braded as
desired.

Cleaning of industrial acidic waste water with human hair-Endüstriyel asidik
artık sularının insan saçıyla temizlenmesi Project Type: Environment-
Chemistry Project to Summarize:

Many studies have been carried out to determine the effectiveness and reliable
factors in removing metal ions from wastewater using low cost absorbent. As in this
regard Kishnica mine water possesses a risk to the environment and thus the
people since it contains many ions such as Fe ,Mn, Zn , Pb , Cd , Cu …

The mine in Kishnica is not used anymore and does not have any filter system ,
because of raining it pollutes some rivers in that area.

Thus this project is focused on human hair as an alternative absorbent in order to

remove Fe ,Mn, Zn , ions ( high concentration ) from industrial acidic waste water.
