At the IIM (A) 5 areas of specialisation are available. They are Marketing, Finance, Production, Personnel
and Systems. However it is necessary for any student to take up a combination of two of the above.
Based on common preference, preset combinations called modules are offered, coded M001, M002, M003,
M004 and M005. Each allows two specialisations such that every specialisation is assigned to two modules.
Further to allow for uncommon preferences a student is allowed to take up more than one combination in
such a manner that the specialisation common to the two modules is necessarily dropped. However, a smart
student, by manipulating combinations, may be able to specialise in more than two subjects.
Additional information is as follows :

Traditionally, airlines paid a fixed-rate commission of 7 percent for point-to-point domestic ticket sales. In
return for creating conditions that made the travel agency profitable, airlines have always been able to write
the rules governing agency competition. A Civil Aeronautics Board rule, however, abolished the fixed-rate
commission and ordered carriers to propose new plans for compensating travel agents. Officials of the
agency indicated that the intent was to promote retail price competition and encourage new alternative retail
outlets.

United Airlines was the first to respond, proposing to pay a flat $8.50 per ticket. Travel agencies reacted by
diverting traffic to other airlines offering higher commissions. United suffered a 14 percent sales drop in one
month as a result, in part, of the new commission. Finally, United withdrew the plan and offered a sliding-
scale plan paying travel agents from $7.50 to $37.50 depending on the distance flown. Other airlines offered
different plans. For examples, Eastern, now defunct, proposed a commission ranging from 8 to 11 percent,
the former Frontier Airlines plan called for 10 to 11 percent, and American Airlines plan was so complex
that most agents indicated that they could not understand it.

37. United Airlines sales in the month before the flat commission plan was implemented were $ 300
million. Assuming the average ticket to cost $ 120 and all ticket sales are being made through agents
what was the change in the commission paid to travel agents after the flat plan was implemented
approximately ( $ m) ?

If we look it closely than last two ways are similar to first two ways. So, we have to concentrate on
first two ways.

1. 4 In this question we have to find out the person who tested negative. Now if we look on the first
way than by condition (iii) Mr. Nahua is seated diagonally to the spouse of person who tested
negative. It means that Mr. Hua is tested negative. But if we look on the second way than Mr.
Nahua is tested negative. So, we cannot conclude one answer of the question. Hence cannot be
determined.

2. 1 In these questions we have to find out the person who tested positive. Now if we look at the first
case than by condition (iii) we can find out that Mr. Hua is tested negative, than From condition
(i) it is clear that Mrs. Hua is tested positive.

Now, if we look at the second case than by condition (iii) we can find out that Mr. Nahua is tested

6-9. Chamcham was brought by the one who set up pinedance (4) and the theatre was arranged by the
one from Calcutta (6), so the one who brought biryani (from Rajasthan [7]) arranged merry-go-
rides (7).
Biryani was not brought by Rupa (fried potatoes [1]), Jabbar (Delhi [5]), Joshi (Dance [3]) or
Kamalnayan (8), so it was Pawan.
Since Pawan is from Rajasthan, Jabbar is from Delhi (5), and Kamalnayan is not from Orissa or
Gujrat (8), Kamalnayan is from Calcutta and he arranged for the threatre (6).
Since Rupa, who brought the fried potatoes (1), did not set up the pinedance (chamcham [4]), so
she arranged the fireworks.
Therefore, Jabbar (from Delhi [5]) set up the pinedance, and Rupa is from Orissa, and Joshi is from
Gujarat.
Toasts were not brought by Kamalnayan (Calcutta [1]), so they were brought by Joshi.
And Kamalnayan brought the burfi.
Summary:

Kamalnayan Calcutta Burfi Theatre

Joshi Gujarat Toasts Dance
Jabbar Delhi Chamcham Pine dance
Pawan Rajasthan Biryani Merry-go-round Rides
Rupa Orissa Fried potatoes Fireworks

6. 2 Kamalnayan is from Calcutta.

7. 1 Fireworks were arranged by Rupa.
8. 3 The one who is from Delhi arranged Pinedance.
9. 4 Pinedance Delhi fried potatoes is not a correct matching triplet.

13-16 Combine the information given in the points and make the following tables:

Ms. Maharashtra Ms. UP Ms. WB Ms. AP

OR

Ms. AP Ms. WB Ms. UP Ms. Maharashtra

Yellow Red Green White

Now all the questions can be answered.

13. 2 Ms. Andhra Pradesh was wearing yellow color saree.
14. 2 Ms. West Bengal sitting between Ms. Andhra Pradesh and Ms. Uttar Pradesh.
15. 3 Ms. West Bengal was wearing the red saree.
16. 2 Ms. Uttar Pradesh was wearing Green saree.
17. 3 Let total of cards in the third cage be x.
So total of cards in the second cage = x + 2.
Hence total of cards in the third cage = x + 4.
So x + x + 2 + x + 4 = 45. Hence x = 13.
So total of cards in the second cage = 15 and total of cards in the first cage = 17.
The only case satisfying all the given conditions is: Cage 1: 9, 6, 2.
Cage 2: 3, 8, 4.
Cage 3: 5,7,1.
(considering condition of Rs. 7 also)
So lowest payment is Rs. 3 + Rs. 2 + Rs. 1 = Rs. 6. Hence, (3).
18. 3 Maximum possible payment
= Rs. 7 + Rs. 8 + Rs. 9 = Rs. 24.
Hence, (3).
19. 4 Option (4) is not possible.
20. 4 Customer cannot pay Rs. 23 as 23 = 9 + 8 + 6 and 9 and 6 are in the same cage.
Hence, (4).
21. 2 Since Sally thinks she has enough information, we deduce that Sam answered his house number
was a perfect square greater than 50 (answering Yes to both).
There are two of these {64,81} and Sally must live in one of them in order to have decided she
knew where Sam lives.
Sam answered only the second question truthfully, so his house number is greater than 50, but not a
perfect square.
Since Sam answered Sues second question truthfully, he had to have answered yes to Is it greater
than 25?. Sue was able to deduce Sams number, so he also must have said it was a perfect cube.
Cubes greater than 25: {27,64}. Sue must live in one of these houses to deduce Sams number.
Since Sams number is greater than 50 and is less than Sues number, she must live in 64.
Since Sue and Sally are not roommates (were told there are three numbers), Sally must live in 81.
Given fact: the sum of their numbers is a perfect square multiplied by two.
Sue + Sally + Sam = 2p (for p an integer)
Or, 64 + 81 + Sam = 2p2
Applying the constraint that Sams number is greater than 50 and less than 64, it looks like Sam =
55 (p = 10).
In summary,
Sam = 55 Sue = 64 Sally = 81
Option (2).
22. 1 Option (1).
23. 2 Option (2).
24-26. 1 Let us start to arrange the whole information. Can each of the denominations add up to each of the
total? Answer is No. See the chart given below for its details:

Denomination Possible total

1p 1.40, 1.50, 1.60, 1.70, 1.75
2p 1.40, 1.50, 1.60, 1.70
5p 1.40, 1.50, 1.60, 1.70, 1.75
10p 1.40, 1.50, 1.60, 1.70
20p 1.40, 1.60

Now, see clue (iv).

We get that the piggy bank used to store 20p pieces contained a greater sum of money than the one
containing 5p pieces.
Obviously, among the possible totals 1.40 and 1.60, the sum 1.40 is not possible because it the
least value.
Hence the piggy bank used to store 20p pieces contained a sum equal to 1.60.
This implies that the sum in the piggy bank which is used to store the 5p pieces may be either 1.40
or 1.50. Again, a total of 1.75 can be obtained only through the denomination of 1p or 5p.
Hence, the amount 1.75 can be totalled only with the help of coins of 1p.
Again, from clue (v), we get that the sum in the China bank may be either 1.60, or 1.70.
And the total 1.60 was added by highest denomination 20p pieces.
Hence, the China bank stored 1.70 as a total amount whereas the piggy bank from Margate
contained 1.50.
Now using the above information, let us make a table as given below:

Table I
S.
Material Bought from Denomintion Total
No.
1 1.40
2 Margate 1.50
3 20p 1.60
4 China 1.70
5 1p 1.75
Again, the China bank contained coins of one of the lowest three denominations1p or 2p or 5p
(see clue v).
But it cant be 1p coins (see the chart given above).
Also, it cant be coins of 5p (because 5p adds to a total of 1.40 or 1.50).
Hence, we can conclude that the China bank contained 2p coins.
Put the above information in table I.
Again, from clue (iii), we get the coins in the bank made of Tin were 2p or 10p or 20p.
But it cant be 2p coins (because 2p coins were stored in China bank) or 20p coins (because it is the
coin of the highest denomination).
Hence, the piggy bank made from Tin contained 10p coins. And, the 20p coins were stored in the
bank bought from Southwald.
Now, from clue (ii), we get that 1p coins were not stored in the piggy bank of Terracotta because
the Terracotta bank contained less than 1.75.

Also, it was not stored in the piggy bank made of Plastic [from clue (i)].
Also, it was not stored in the bank made of Tin (because the piggy bank made of Tin contained 10p
coins). Thus, we can conclude that 1p coins were stored in the bank made of Wood.

Again, from clue (ii), we get that 5p coins were not kept in the piggy bank made from Terracotta.
Hence, we can conclude that 20p coins were kept in the piggy bank made from Terracotta whereas
5p coins were kept in the piggy bank made from Plastic.

The obtained information now are as follows, as mentioned in the table II.

Table II

S. Bought
Material Denomination Total
No. from
1 1.40
2 Margate 1.50
3 Terracotta Southwald 20p 1.60
4 China 2p 1.70
5 Wood 1p 1.75

Again, the Plastic piggy bank contained more than 1.40 [see clue (i)]. Hence, we can conclude
that it is the Plastic piggy bank bought from Margate whereas the Tin piggy bank contained 1.40.

Again, clue (i), we get that the denomination of coins in Plastic piggy banks are higher than 2p and
the bank bought from Bournemouth. Hence, we can conclude that the piggy bank made from Wood
was bought from Bournemouth.
Thus, the obtained information can be summarized as follows:

Table III

Answering question no. 26th firstly..it is given that Ts husband is truckwala and as we know that V
is not truckwala hence VT is not possible.
Coming to 2nd option it is already given that R is a paperwala.
So RT is also not possible.
And Q is already is married to W. Also not possible.
Hence S is married to T.
Now 3 Professions are left i.e. painter, chakkiwala and sabziwala.
Now as T is Female, she can neither be painter nor chakkiwala, hence T is sabziwala.
Moreover given that V cant be chakkiwala.
Hence V is a Painter.
And W is a chakkiwala.
27. 3 R earns the maximum in the family.
28. 4 ST is married couple.
29. 4 When they are arranged in descending order of their income, then Ps position from the

30. 2 There are three members in the family.
31-34. The main thing is that if any specialization is common to the 2 modules selected it gets dropped
and is not a specialization.
M001 does not have production and M003 does not have marketing.
But their combination gives us marketing and systems so M001 must have marketing since M001
and M002 have 4 different subjects there must be no common specialization and M002 will not
have marketing but will have production M003 will have systems included because it is not a part
of M001 so M001 will have finance or personnel and it will be common to M003. Since the M001
and M004 combination does not have marketing as a specialization it means that they have
marketing in common.
Since they have finance and personnel in common M001 has finance and M004 has personnel.
So M002 also has personnel.
So M003 must also have finance.
This leaves M005 with production and systems.

Subjects present Subjects not present

M001 Marketing, Finance X Prod.
M002 Production, Personnel
M003 Systems, Finance X Mark.
M004 Marketing, Personnel X Finance
M005 Production, Systems
31. 2 One can choose M001, M002, M003, and M004 and still study only two subjects because
whichever subject comes common will be dropped.
Hence Option(2)
32. 2 Option (2). We can never get 3 specializations.
It will either be 2 or 4, but never 3 subjects.
33. 3 Option (3).
34. 1 Option (1).
35-36. The published clues yield that Betty bought a brown bike, Bobby bought a Beige bike, Billy bought
something Beige, and Brian bought something blue. Also, we know from clue 4 that Brian did not
have the same item as anyone else did.
If the missing clue were to read, A balloon was not purchased by Billy, then Billy could still have
bought a bike or a ball. Brian could have bought a balloon or, if Billy had a bike, a ball, so this clue
would still leave the problem indeterminate.
If the missing clue read, A balloon was not purchased by Brian, then Brian must have purchased
a ball, but Billy could still have bought a bike or a balloon. Nothing can be further deduced, so this
cant be the solution either.
Thus, the only way to make the problem solve is by taking away more options. Note that the
problem doesnt say that the blank was filled with a name. The clue should have read, A balloon
was not purchased by anyone. That means, again that Brian must have purchased a ball, but Billy
in this case must have purchased a bike.
With that clue, heres what everyone bought, again:

Betty Brown Bike

Bobby Beige Bike
Billy Beige Bike
Brian Blue Ball
35. 4 Option 4.
36. 4 All statements are definitely true.
37. 3 The commission paid in the original plan was 7% of $300 million = $21 million.
After the new plan, sales dropped by 14% to become $ 258 million.
The commission paid was (8.5 x 258 million)/120 = $18.275 million.
Thus the change in commission was
21 18.275 = $2.725 million or
approximately $ 3 million.
38. 2 From the previous question it is known that United lost $42 million in revenues.
This corresponds to 2% of the market share.
So, Frontiers revenues increase by $ 42 million.

The largest is Zod
One island has 1/5 750 =150 Zoxians

Zob = 1.5 one of the islands
Zop = 100 + 75 = 175
the fifth island has = 750 - (75 + 150 + 250 +175) = 100 Zoxians

39. 1 Zog is the smallest island.
40. 4 400 is the sum of the population of Zod and Zob.
41. 2 275 is the sum of population of Zop and Zoz.
42. 1 Half the population of Zox=375
Zod and Zop=425
Zoz and Zob=250

Zod and Zog=32
43. 2 Zozs population is 100.

From the given information,

X Y Z Bombay Banglore Jamshedpur

Mr. Desai

Mr. Mukherjee

Mr. Hegde

Mrs. Desai

Mrs. Mukherjee

Mrs. Hegde

From the given data we can make out that Mr. Desai is President of company X , Mr. Hegde is the
president of company Z & Mr. Mukherjee, president of company Y.

44. 1 Mr. Desai is the president of company.

45. 3 Ms. Mukherjee hails from Bombay.
46. 3 Mr. Mukherjee is the president of Company Y.
47. 1 Ms. Mukherjee Celebrated her 25th birthday.
48. 3 As Mr Desai was the friend of the president of the company who owned the coampany Z so it can
be inferred that Mr. Desai cannot be the owner of the company Z , rest can be inferred from the
given information that Mr. Hegde is the President of company Z.
49. 3 Equation, No. of days he worked= n
Salary = n2 + 2 where n 1 --------(1)
Expenses = 2n + 1 where n 1 ------(2)
Saving = (n 1)2 where n 1 -------(3)
Putting the values of n & savings in equations (3) the answer is 12th day.
50. 3 Increment after n days (means he has worked
for n +1 days) = ((n + 1)+2) - (n+2) > 12,000 implies
2n + 1 > 12,000. Hence n greater than 5999.5 = 6000,
he has worked for n + 1 days which is equal to
6000 +1 = 6001
51. 1 Saving = n 2n + 1 = (n 1) , therefore
(n 1) > 300, put n 1 = y,
sum = y (y + 1) (2y + 1)/6; at y = 10, this satisfies hence n 1= 10 or n = 11.
52. 4 He wins game 1.
Amount with him = 2x
He invests x in game 2.
He loses so still has a balance = 2x x = x.
Invests x/2 in game 3.
Wins so gets back 1.5x/2 = 3x /4.
In addition he has x/2 so total of 5x/4
Invests 5x/4 in game 1 and wins.
So amount with him is 5x/2
Now 5x/2 = 375.
So x = 150.
Hence 4.
53. 3 Amount of money at the end of 2 is = x = 150.
Hence 3.
54. 3 Required difference = 1.25x 2x
= -0.75x = -112.5 $
Answer is 3.
55. 1 He wins game 3 after investing 1.25x and so gets
1.5 1.25 = 1.875x.
= 1.875 150 = 281.25.
Hence 1.
56. 2 Amount required to watch hockey match is
4 200 = 800.
Total amount at the end = 2.5x = 2.5 300 = 750.
So shortfall of 800 750 = 50 dollars.
Hence 2.
