Respiratory Protection
General Rules
All respirators are compliant with the most stringent European and American standards ensuring that products
provide the highest level of protection against hazards
Gas Fumes: the appropriate filter must be selected for each contaminant
Organic gases and vapours, for which the boiling point is above 65C. For example:
A
solvents, hydrocarbons etc.
AX Organic gases and vapour which the boiling point is below 65C
B Inorganic gases and vapour, e.g. chlorine, cyanide, formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid etc.
Look Out for Danger
E Acid gases and vapour, e.g. sulfur dioxide, etc.
Note: combined security K Ammonia and organic amino derivatives
P Particles, dust
In over 70% of cases the risk to the users is in the
CO Carbon monoxide
form of both particulates and gases this requires
the use of a combination filter with both activated Hg Mercury vapour
charcoal and mechanical (P3) elements Nox Nitrogen monoxide, nitrogen oxides, nitrous vapour

and radiant heat test for type 2 apparatus.
EN 140 Half masks and quarter masks The European standard specifies the minimum requirements for
half masks and quarter masks for use with breathing apparatus,
except for devices used in evacuation and diving.
EN 14387 Anti-gas filters and combined filters The European standard deals with gas filters and combined filters
used as components of unassisted respirators. Filters against CO are
not covered by the standard. Some filters meeting the standard can
also be used with assisted breathing devices and, in this case, must
be tested and marked with the appropriate European standard.
EN 402* Open circuit compressed air self- The European standard specifies the minimum requirements for
contained breathing apparatus, with opencircuit compressed air self-contained breathing apparatus, with on-
on-demand valve, full face mask or demand valve for evacuation. The European standard does not apply
mouthpiece assembly for evacuation. to protective devices for work and rescue, or diving apparatus.
EN 1146* Open circuit compressed air self-contained The European standard specifies the minimum requirements for
breathing apparatus, with hood for evacuation. open circuit compressed air self-contained breathing apparatus,
with a hood for evacuation. This equipment is intended for use in
work situations where the risk of over-pressurization of the pressure
vessels and their valves because of ambient heat is low. The European
standard does not apply to appliances used for normal or diving.
EN 13794* Closed circuit self-contained breathing The European standard specifies the minimum requirements for self-
apparatus for evacuation. contained closed-circuit breathing apparatus, using chemical oxygen
(KO2, NaCIO3) and compressed oxygen for evacuation (aka: oxygen
evacuation apparatus). The European standard does not apply to
protective devices for work and rescue, or diving apparatus.
