Voices from the periphery: Bamas Sangati

Abstract

Tamil Dalit Christian novelist Bama's Sangati (converted into English by Lakshmi Holmstrom)
is the jamboree of various voices of the abuse, resistance and organization in the life of Dalit
ladies of Tamilnadu. The point of this paper is to fundamentally look at Bama's novel Sangati
from the perspective of Dalit woman's rights. The author through her rendition highlights dalit
woman's rights and tries to investigate "histories from below" that is the most recent wonder in
Indian artistic circles. Position framework is made by the people for the improvement of
humankind and is considered as one of the techniques for division of work. In the long run this
has started to isolate them in understanding their rank. Afterward, the rank framework itself has
gotten to be a custom that will be taken after, making men to disregard their humankind and
fellowship. Every single station has its own particular exceptional components: both points of
interest and weaknesses. The storyteller through her books shares the way of life and traditions
of Paraya community. In the novel Sangati, she not just delineates the torment of Dalits, be that
as it may be, likewise depicts them as dissenters against the bad form which has laid its savage
hand on them by the name of station and sex. Through this novel, storyteller uncovered the
universe of Dalits to the external world and furthermore to the next Dalit individuals, teaching
them to battle for their rights. Dalit works depend on the sufferings of the abused class. A Dalit
lady experiences two sorts of torment, one that she is a ladies and the other that she has a place
with a most minimal group. It is these sufferings that Bama centers in Sangati. Bama through
fastidious portrayal, voices out how the way patriarchy functions with Dalit ladies. Bama depicts
the reasonable picture of Dalit ladies who scarcely hinders independent of her being dealt with
brutally by their fathers, siblings or spouses. This paper endeavors to investigate the oppression
as well as agency in the life of Dalit women. Sangati contributes as a rule to dalit circumstance
and specifically to Dalit woman's rights. The Dalit circumstance communicated in this novel
cannot be taken as a total photo of the life of Dalit ladies. It is only the fragment of aggregate
reality.
