Revolutionary War Projects

Grade(s) 3rdand 5th
Subject(s) Social Studies
Length of Lesson 5 days
Lesson Groups of three or four students will pick a significant person or event that we
Overview/Rationale have discussed from the chapter and research it. Then, they will create a
paper bag person or event depicting their chosen topic. Students will find at
least one item each, associated with their person or event to put in the bag
and explain the relationship of the objects to their subject to the class in a
brief presentation, and a well thought out paragraph. (The paragraph will be
handed in to me so I can follow along and help if necessary). This will help the
students build a better understanding of the chapter and events while also
learning how to ask and answer questions to and from their classmates.

Curriculum Grade 3

scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text,
using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.
Distinguish their own point of view from that of the author of a text.
Grade 5

supported by key details; summarize the text
Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more
individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or
technical text based on specific information in the text.
. Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting
important similarities and differences in the point of view they
represent
Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources,
demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or
to solve a problem efficiently.

Crayola markers
NO SHARPIES!! They will bleed through.

Procedure Day 1
Read popcorn style and discuss/view materials related to the chapter
with the students.
Let students choose their groups. They should have 3 or 4 kids in a
group. If they dont want to cooperate, have them count off 1
through 5. (There should be 5 groups of 3.)
Put the 1s in one area, 2s in another, and so on.
With the last 5 minutes or so, have them agree on a topic that they
want to research (significant person or event from our chapter) and
write it down so you know who is doing what.
Remind students to bring in a device for research the next two days,
and start bringing in the supplies they want.

Day 2

Students should begin to bring in their materials for their projects.

Students should not use sites like Wikipedia. They should use their
textbooks, an online database (link provided) and other reliable
sources.
Day 3
Continued research
Students should have all items they will use in the classroom by now.
As students finish researching information, they may begin crafting
their paper bag.
Day 4
Continue creating their paper bags.
Students should finish their projects today.
Tomorrow will begin presentations.
Day 5
PRESENTATIONS
Students will begin by telling what their topic is, and how it is
significant to history. Then they will each take turns presenting
his/her object(s) and why it is significant to their topic.
At the end, the class will clap and the audience will have the
opportunity to ask questions and the students will have the
opportunity to answer. I will help if they get stuck.
Happy Weekend! No homework!

Students would be assessed on:
Teamwork
Creativity
Preparedness for their presentations
