When is the product of two integers positive?

Rule number 1: When you multiply one positive integers times a positive integers your
result will be a positive integer. They both numbers being multiplied are the same positive
signs therefore your result will consist of a positive number.
POSITIVE X POSITIVE= POSITIVE
Example 1: ( +3 ) x ( +2) = +6
Notice how both numbers multiplied are positive therefore your result was a positive as
well.
Look at it this way you have 3 positive red chips x 2

x2

therefore it will now be, (3 red positve chips times two)

x

= vv v

Equals to 6 positive red chips

Example 2: (+6 ) x ( +4)= +24

See the pattern is repeated both positive values therefore your result will be the same due
to having the two number multiplied with the same sign which will lead to your result to
be positive.
Rule number 2: When multiplying if the two numbers have both negative signs then your
product will be a positive integer. Just like previously mentioned if the two numbers used
both contain the same sign your result will always be positive.
NEGATIVE X NEGATIVE= POSITIVE

Example 1: (-1) x (-2) = +2

You see how both the integers muliptlied both have negative sign , just like the rule
above states if the signs are the same the product will be positive.
Look at it this way when negative they will be represented by blue negative chips

x (-2)

therefore it will now be represented as (1 blue chip times two blue chips)
x

Equals to two positive chips signs the sign are the same turns into positive red chips

Example 2: (-5) x (-5) = (+25)

Again the same goes for this example both integers that are multiplied have the same sign
therefore your result will always be a positive product.
